ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, attended the first of this year's Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed Ramadan sessions, titled "The Future of Finance in the Age of Intelligence".The session, which took place at a dedicated lecture venue at Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, featured as its keynote speaker Jim Marous, owner of the Digital Banking Report and an industry futurist and authority on disruption in finance.
Mr Marous began by exploring how artificial intelligence is reshaping the banking sector, creating both opportunities and challenges such as the rapidly evolving expectations of consumers who want engagement, dialogue and empathy, not just 'a good experience'.

The financial expert explained how financial institutions need to inspire an elevated level of trust in consumers to transform the way they bank, but also warned that banks' back-office legacy systems must keep pace in order to support the transformation taking place.Mr Marous praised the 'democratisation of data' and said consumers had come to expect personalisation. He noted that large-scale innovation is taking place at a speed and scale we have never seen before, driven by data, analytics and technology.The industry strategist discussed how AI will transform not just the financial sector, but every component of our lives. He encouraged everyone to embrace generative AI and constantly ask it questions, because 'prompting skills are the tools of the future.'The topic was then opened up to a panel discussion featuring Hana Al Rostamani, Group CEO of First Abu Dhabi Bank; Abdallah Al Mansoori, Managing Partner of I3H Investment; and Feras Jalbout, Founder and CEO of Baraka.Discussing the biggest challenges in adapting to AI-driven finance, Hana Al Rostamani highlighted three key considerations for traditional banks: Embracing technology in order to process available data and deliver the best services to clients, upskilling exiting talent and onboarding suitable new joiners to ensure banks are future-ready, and working within a robust operating environment that encompasses security, privacy and regulation.Abdallah Al Mansoori then spoke about the opportunities in the current regulatory and policy landscape regarding fostering financial inclusion and AI adoption in financial and capital markets. He commended a programme launched by the UAE Central Bank aimed at fully integrating nine complex pillars for digital infrastructure and the advancement of financial services throughout the country.Feras Jalbout discussed how AI is shaping investment management. Archer completes first urban air taxi test flight in Abu Dhabi
2 July 2025 20:39 KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI)Archer Aviation has completed the first urban test flight of its electric air taxi in Abu Dhabi, marking a major milestone in the UAE's ambition to lead the future of air mobility. The successful vertical take-off and landing flight was carried out at Al Bateen Executive Airport in the heart of the city at 7am, with Archer executives and Abu Dhabi officials hailing it as a critical first step towards commercial launch. 'This is our first global launch market. This was a vertical take-off and landing flight - the first step in our flight test operation,' Dr. Talib Alhinai, General Manager for Archer Aviation in the UAE, told Aletihad following the flight. Conducting the flight in real UAE conditions was crucial to proving the viability of the concept, Dr. Alhinai said. 'Our initial flight test operations in the UAE are focusing on evaluating the aircraft's speed, core performance in specific conditions, including humidity, temperature, and dust exposure. This also allows us to validate readiness for commercial deployment,' he said. The tests carried out in Abu Dhabi's summer environment would be key to ensuring the air taxi can perform reliably year-round. Expanding the trial programme is already underway, Dr. Alhinai said, with plans to expand the flight envelope and test pilot sites in the UAE throughout the year. 'This test flight took place in Abu Dhabi city executive airport with the backdrop of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. According to my knowledge, no eVTOL flight has taken place in an urban environment in Abu Dhabi before,' he said. Al Bateen airport is right in the middle of Abu Dhabi Island, and for us, this was a great first step and a great first place to launch our programme.' Roadmap for Urban Operations Initial passenger services are set to launch within Abu Dhabi city, before the network is expanded, Dr. Alhinai the full list of vertiport locations remains under wraps for now, Archer says the initial network will offer urban connectivity for residents and visitors, with further details expected to be announced soon. Dr. Alhinai also highlighted Archer's collaboration with local stakeholders to integrate air taxis seamlessly into the capital's broader mobility network. This was echoed by Omran Malek, Head of the Smart Autonomous Vehicle Industry Cluster at the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), a major stakeholder in Archer. The emirate is building an entire ecosystem for urban air mobility, covering training, maintenance, regulatory integration, and manufacturing, Malek said. Drawing an analogy with the evolution of smartphones, he explained that air taxis are no longer an imaginary concept; they now represent a future industry. 'Think about the iPhones at the time in the early 2000s: If I told you then how much the iPhone is doing now, you would say that's impossible,' he told Aletihad on Wednesday. 'What we're doing, especially within ADIO and the SAVI cluster, is imagining what the next 20 years are going to look like in terms of mobility, logistics, and liveability.'Malek argued that amid population growth and higher traffic volumes, skyward would be the way to go. 'If we look at the airspace above you, it is empty. It's unutilised. How can we tap into that? How can we reduce emissions? How can we reduce the travel time?' he said. Malek emphasised that urban air mobility would not be an exclusive service for the wealthy. Rather, it would be priced at a point that could make it a real alternative for many Abu Dhabi residents, he said. The goal, he added, is to build enough infrastructure and air vehicles so that 'it will be scalable, and you can use it on a daily basis.'Outlining multiple potential use cases, he cited that air taxis could also serve sectors such as tourism, logistics, and healthcare for urgent medical deliveries. 'As battery technologies evolve, you will see the range of [use cases] extending, and you would have a choice between taking the high-speed train from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah or taking air taxi,' he said. Beyond Air Taxis Malek emphasised that these air mobility trials are driven by a clear goal of commercialisation.'We are not testing just to test. We're testing to commercialise. We identified that 70% of demand is on logistics, from food delivery to blood supplies and shore-to-ship deliveries,' he said. To assess demand for air mobility services, he noted that Abu Dhabi has conducted a comprehensive survey involving 52 government entities. The resulting data is guiding ADIO's priorities as it works with private sector partners like Archer. Beyond air taxis, Malek said the SAVI cluster is working on use cases for drones in logistics that could be in service even sooner. 'If we specifically talk about Archer, that's the next milestone in the coming months. If we're talking about the drones and drone logistics, it will be a lot sooner than that.'

UAE and India explore avenues for enhancing economic and industrial collaboration during the upcoming stage

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral collaboration across key economic and industrial sectors, with a particular emphasis on the new economy, logistic transportation, advanced technology, manufacturing and food Touq underscored the deep-rooted and strategic partnership between the UAE and India, noting the shared commitment of the leadership to expanding cooperation in new economy sectors. 'The two nations enjoy a decades-long history of economic collaboration built on shared interests and a common vision for sustainable growth,' Bin Touq Touq further highlighted significant areas of alignment in both countries' development strategies, including the circular economy, advanced manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology. Bin Touq said, 'Economic collaboration between the UAE and India continues to strengthen, with notable growth in business activities. By the end of June 2025, the total number of Indian companies operating in the UAE reached 264,687. During the meeting, we discussed strategies to enhance communication between business communities of the two countries and to encourage the establishment of diverse ventures across vital economic sectors.'He noted that the UAE has an adaptable and competitive legislative and economic environment that stimulates industrial investments across the world. The manufacturing sector contributed 13.5 per cent to the UAE's non-oil GDP in 2024, ranking as the second on the list of economic activities contributing most to the non-oil GDP of the national economy. Additionally, the foreign direct investment (FDI) in this vital sector reached approximately Dh 40 billion (USD 10.9 billion) by the end of 2022, representing 7 per cent of the country's total FDI meeting also explored the key enablers and competitive advantages of the UAE's business environment for Indian companies, along with strategies to maximise these benefits. Among the highlighted strengths were the UAE's strategic location connecting East with West, its comprehensive economic partnerships, advanced infrastructure, diverse logistics services, and tax incentives that encourage the establishment of diverse economic and investment activities. Both sides emphasised the importance of enhancing collaboration between the public and private sectors to facilitate the exchange of expertise and best practices, aimed at adopting the latest technologies across sectors related to the new economy. Of the challenges, 21 were related to government efficiency and eliminating bureaucracy, 8 required participants to suggest solutions leading to enhanced quality of life, 3 touched on community services, and 3 tested participants on their overall awareness and knowledge dissemination Government Accelerators Diploma, organised as part of national initiatives aimed at promoting the adoption of challenge-based talent development models across various spheres of government work, seeks to enhance national competencies in the government and semi-government sectors, train national talents on adopting accelerator methodologies and tools, and empower them with creative leadership skills so that they step up to champion the acceleration culture within their respective entities. Ambassadors Network The Government Accelerators Centre at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs announced the launch of the Government Accelerators Ambassadors Network, aimed at enhancing engagement and solidifying knowledge exchange to grow the accelerators ecosystem across the Government Accelerators Network represents an innovative platform designed to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among graduates of government accelerator programmes both inside and outside the country. It is a strategic step to expand the accelerators community and provide an interactive environment that brings graduates together to share best practices, celebrate successes, and support national network includes various knowledge tracks to showcase success stories from past cohorts. The event recognised three pioneering projects that stood out amongst ideas and concepts that emerged across five cohorts of the diploma most impactful and sustainable projects were feted, including the 'Traffic Speed Limit Reduction System,' the 'Hayat' organ donation initiative, and the 'Robotic Process Automation' project. Selected from amongst 86 submissions, these projects stood out for their significant and lasting impact, based on criteria such as sustainability, innovation, measurability, relevance to government challenges, and societal 'Hayat' organ donation initiative, submitted by the Ministry of Health and Prevention as part of the third cohort, was recognised for its transformative role in raising public awareness and increasing participation in the national organ donation project aimed to boost organ donor registrations in Fujairah and achieved a 50% increase within 100 days through a comprehensive awareness campaign targeting universities, schools, government and religious institutions, along with strong engagement from community 'Traffic Speed Limit Reduction System Based on Weather Conditions Using Artificial Intelligence,' submitted by the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police during the first cohort, was also recognised. The project is a smart system that uses AI to analyse meteorological data and traffic-related big data. It automatically adjusts speed limits through electronic signboards and sends alerts to system contributed to a 100% reduction in severe accidents on some roads and improved traffic response time by 90%. The project received the 'Ongoing and Sustainable Project Award' based on criteria such as sustainability, scalability, innovation, the availability of measurable data, future development plans, and collaboration between 'Robotic Process Automation' project by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) also earned pride of place during the event. It leverages artificial intelligence and robotic processing to automate operations and support human efforts. The project enhances DEWA's ability to deliver smart, sustainable solutions that address government challenges, improve productivity, streamline operations, and reduce costs. Since 2020, the project has saved an estimated AED24 million – equivalent to around 161,000 working hours annually. Collaborative Effort Government Accelerators, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, represents a forward-looking operational model. The initiative brings together teams from the government, private, and academic sectors who work collaboratively to drive innovation, deliver exceptional services, exceed targets, save time, and overcome challenges. Since its launch in April 2019, the Government Accelerators Diploma has qualified 217 participants from more than 135 government, private, and semi-government entities. They worked on developing solutions and launching projects and initiatives addressing 121 challenges, ably supported by approximately 750 government staff members from the accelerator teams.
