KBS supports bringing in heritage athletes
Its Minister, Hannah Yeoh said each sport has its own international regulations whether relating to heritage or naturalised players and her ministry does not have any problem regarding the matter.
"We follow international regulations, if Fifa (Federation of International Football Associations) allows it, we are ok and if 'World Aquatics' allows heritage athletes, we are also 'ok' because it is according to the regulations approved by their respective sports bodies.
"We give priority to local talent but every team that comes out to compete must want to win... as long as they want to win and follow the rules, we will support them," she told reporters after officiating the Asean Youth Robotics 2025 (ASEAN Y-RoboC' 25), here today.
However, Hannah reminded all sports associations not to make the step of taking naturalised or heritage athletes an easy step to find victory because KBS has channelled an allocation of RM1 million through the National Sports Council (MSN) for the purpose of developing grassroots athletes, especially for the Olympic Games since 2023.
"In fact, efforts to bring in heritage or naturalised players also need to follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN)," he said.
Meanwhile, regarding the contract issue between the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and world No. 3 women's doubles Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, Hannah said the issue did not affect them in the Road to Gold (RTG) programme because their party always supports all athletes who have been listed as gold prospects at the 2028 Olympic Games. – BERNAMA

No formal protests over Malaysia's naturalised players, says AFC
Nine of Malaysia's starting-11 in their match against Vietnam last month were naturalised players, with five of them receiving Fifa clearance just hours before kick-off. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Asian Football Confederation has not received any official complaint regarding Malaysia's naturalised players following the national team's Asian Cup qualifier win against Vietnam last month. AFC general-secretary Windsor Paul told FMT that the status of naturalised players was ultimately a matter for the world football governing body, Fifa. 'The status of players comes under the purview of Fifa. From my side, AFC has not received any official protest. And even if we did, we will forward it to Fifa,' he said. This follows an Indonesian report claiming that Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam on June 10 may be overturned because some of Harimau Malaya's naturalised players were purportedly ineligible to represent the nation. The report alleged that the result would be voided and Vietnam would be awarded a 3-0 win. It also said the Football Association of Malaysia could be fined up to US$2 million (RM9.4 million) and face further sanctions if Fifa finds evidence of document manipulation involving the heritage of players. FAM dismissed the report as baseless, saying it had complied with the necessary procedures for the registration of the players. Nine of the team's starting-11 in the game were naturalised players, with five of them – Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Imanol Machuca – receiving Fifa clearance just hours before kick-off.

Fans Voice Concerns For Lee Zii Jia's Mental Health Following Unsettling Instagram Post
Last month, national shuttler Lee Zii Jia (李梓嘉) declined the offer to join the Road to Gold (RTG) programme in preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA2028). According to his team, the athlete is still recovering from injuries sustained during the World Tour Finals in December and believes that his peers are more deserving of the opportunity at this time. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh confirmed the news, but assured that the door remains open should the badminton player reconsider. It's been a few weeks since the news broke, and fans have been wondering how he's been coping. Many expressed concern after the young star posted a series of troubling images on his Instagram, which appeared to hint at his current mental health struggles. Here's what happened: Yesterday (Thursday, 3rd July), Lee Zii Jia shared a carousel of images on his Instagram, featuring drawings that appeared to depict struggles with mental health, particularly depression. The unsettling post was shared without a caption, and the athlete also changed his profile photo to black, further fuelling concern among fans. Naturally, many took to the comments section to express their support, offering words of comfort to the 27-year-old. Some, fearing the worst, urged the young star not to act rashly and reminded him that things can and will get better. Several fellow athletes also showed their support, including Lai Pei Jing, Yap Roy King, and Goh Jin Wei, who reminded Zii Jia that he doesn't have to face his hardships alone. Fans also urged Zii Jia's celebrity friends to check in on him personally, simply to ensure he is safe and well. After browsing through some of their social media pages, it was found that Lai Pei Jing recently posted about spending time with the Kedah-born badminton player and their friends at what appears to be a Disney-themed garden in Singapore. However, it remains unclear when the gathering actually took place. At the time of writing, neither Lee Zii Jia nor his team has issued any updates regarding his current condition. We sincerely hope that his friends and family are by his side during this difficult time and that he receives the support he needs to recover and regain his strength. Sources: Instagram, TheStar
