VIDEO: R42m revamp of Kings Park pool to be completed by July 2026
THE R42m upgrade underway at Kings Park Swimming Pool is set to be completed by the end of July 2026.
That's the word from acting head of the Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Unit Dr Zakhi Mkhize who led journalists on a walkabout through the municipal pool on Friday morning.
The municipal-run pool was closed in November 2024 after strong winds damaged the roof.
Earlier this year the City said repairs to the pool would be completed by the end of April but that deadline has since been moved to 2026.
'Key improvements include the installation of 1500 LUX lighting, glass window replacements, non-slip coatings for stairs and paving, upgrades to walkway structures and handrails, a complete overhaul of two canteen areas, plastering and painting, new signage, a scoreboard, and diving boards,' the City said in a statement in April this year.
The pool is the only swimming facility in SA with a World Aquatics accreditation and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee for hosting international water sports competitions.
The swimming complex also features both indoor and outdoor facilities.

The iconic Kings Park Swimming Pool in Durban is undergoing a long-awaited R42 million upgrade and is set to reopen to the public by June 2026, eThekwini Municipality officials confirmed this week. The 100-year-old pool, which has been closed since November 2024, is receiving a full revamp in two stages. Project lead Zakhi Mkhize from the municipality says Phase One – focused on emergency repairs following storm damage earlier this year – will conclude by the end of July. 'Phase Two starts now and will run for a full year, until June [2026]. This includes not only structural work but a facelift to enhance the architectural and aesthetic appeal,' said Mkhize. She added that upgrades would also address compliance and safety issues, including projection and water level regulations, to ensure the facility meets modern standards. Kings Park Pool is located in a vital sport tourism hub, adjacent to landmarks such as Moses Mabhida Stadium and Durban Country Club. The area is known as Durban's 'sports precinct', hosting both international and local sporting events. 'This facility is one of a kind. Its revival will complement the city's sports infrastructure and help draw tourism, while providing a high-quality public space for recreation and training,' Mkhize said. Municipal officials have committed to strict maintenance planning once the upgrade is completed, aiming to prevent further costly refurbishments in the future. Curro Salt Rock tennis sensation powers to tournament titles
Curro Salt Rock tennis sensation, Jack Thornhill, served up a spectacular performance over the school holidays, clinching two provincial titles. Thornhill (15) claimed his first Super 8 title at the KZN American Express tournament, held at Westridge Tennis Stadium in Durban from July 2 to 6. He also finished runner-up in the doubles category, demonstrating his versatility on the court. Not stopping there, the following day the Grade 9 pupil travelled to Johannesburg for the Gauteng Central Super 8 American Express tournament (July 8 to 12), where he won both the singles and doubles titles. Jack's passion for the sport was ignited early and he began playing as soon as he could hold a racquet. His father Philip and younger brother Ryan also hold KZN tennis colours. 'Tennis has always been part of my life,' he said. 'There's a rule in our family that you have to play tennis until you turn 10. I played other sports, but now I focus only on tennis.' Jack's favourite player is Roger Federer, whom he admires for his grace and composure. 'I loved the way he played and carried himself on the court. He was always very calm.' With more than 25 titles to his name and a fierce competitive spirit, the teenager is undoubtedly one to watch. An injury setback earlier this year saw him drop in the national rankings, but he has bounced back with grit and determination. 'It's tough. I was out for half the season and missed out on vital rankings points. I was nervous coming back because my level might have dropped,' said Jack. The comeback has been remarkable. His recent victories have propelled him to 5th in South Africa in the U15 rankings and 13th in the U16 category. Jack plays for Curro's 1st team and has represented South Africa for the past two years. He credits his success to hard work and steely determination. 'Everyone at these tournaments is a high-calibre player, but I was confident I could win because I have been training hard.' 'I only focus on competing and trying to play at a high level. Levelling the playing field with popular Curro Salt Rock Winter Football Clinic
Curro Salt Rock hosted its inaugural Winter Football Clinic during the school holidays. Running from July 7 to 18, the clinic brought together boys and girls from across KwaDukuza. A total of 82 players – aged 10 to 19 – attended from Ballito, Salt Rock, Shakaskraal, Groutville, Stanger and Tongaat. Curro Primary School Head of Sport, Phelelani Mtembu, said the clinic aimed to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity by offering high-quality coaching to both private and public-school pupils.
