Scotland's best pantomime to be honoured for first time

Theatre critics have agreed to recognise festive shows after nearly 20 years of their annual awards with a new 'outstanding pantomime' prize.
They have hailed Scotland as 'the natural home of pantomime' thanks to the long history of star performers like Stanley Baxter, Jimmy Logan, Andy Gray and Gerard Kelly, as well as modern favourites including Elaine C Smith and Johnny McKnight.

The new prize will recognise 'the best overall panto' produced in Scotland each year.
And the panto award will be sponsored by one of Scotland's leading ice cream producers, Mackie's.
The prize will be presented for the first time at the annual Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) at their annual ceremony, which is being staged in June at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

Michael Cox, co-convenor of the CATS judging panel, said: 'Scotland has long been considered the natural home of pantomime, from the early-20th-century music hall productions to the heyday of Stanley Baxter, Rikki Fulton, Jimmy Logan, Una McLean and Johnny Beattie, who then passed on the baton to acclaimed performers such as Elaine C Smith and the late Gerard Kelly and Andy Gray.
'In recent times, writers and performers such as Forbes Masson and Johnny McKnight have further added to Scotland's panto reputation by rethinking the artform for the 21st-century.
'Our new award recognises the breadth of talent that goes into making the perfect panto.'
Co-convenor Mark Brown added: 'The judges are excited to add the category of outstanding pantomime to our annual awards.
'We are grateful to Mackie's – a Scottish company whose ice cream is so closely associated with a trip to the pantomime – for sponsoring the inaugural panto award.'
Stuart Common, managing director of Mackie's, said: 'We are proud to sponsor the very first Outstanding Pantomime award at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland.
'Pantomime and interval ice cream go hand in hand, making up a cherished part of the Christmas tradition for families across Scotland.'
Tickets for the awards ceremony, which is open to the public, go on sale on May 1 from the Traverse Theatre website.
The new award for best Scottish pantomime has been announced weeks after Elaine C Smith was honoured for outstanding achievement at the UK-wide Pantomime Awards.
Johnny McKnight, one of Scotland's best-known panto creators, delivered a prestigious lecture at Glasgow University in January on his long-time involvement with festive shows dressed in the costume of his character Dorothy Blawna-Gale, from his show The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Kneecap's Glasgow Hydro gig sells out as rap trio headline their biggest Scottish show yet

In a jibe to First Minister John Swinney, the band said "A very special thank you to our Head of PR in Scotland Mr John Swinney... best in the business". Kneecap is set to make a return to Glasgow this winter as part of their "biggest run of shows ever" with tickets selling out shortly after going on sale. ‌ The Belfast based rap trio - Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí - will perform 14 shows across Scotland, England and Wales later this year. The tour includes a headline performances at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on November 30, 2025, marking the groups biggest show in Glasgow to date. ‌ Originally slated to play 11 shows, the group extended the tour by adding three additional dates in Leeds, Sheffield, and Manchester after pre-sale tickets sold out almost immediately due to overwhelming demand. ‌ And now it appears the gig has sold out. Taking to Instagram, Kneecap's official account wrote: "Glasgow SOLD OUT in a few hours. 13,000 Scottish F****** comrades... let's go!" In a jibe to First Minister John Swinney, they added: "A very special thank you to our Head of PR in Scotland Mr John Swinney... best in the business". ‌ Swinney played down his beef with Kneecap after he was called out by the Irish rappers at a gig in Glasgow earlier this month. The SNP leader previously warned some of the group's political sloganeering was "beyond the pale". The group hit back during their O2 Academy show on July 8, with Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara asking the crowd: " What's your First Minister's name?" ‌ "They stopped us playing TRNSMT but they can't stop us playing Glasgow." Taking to Instagram to initially announce the tour, Kneecap's official account wrote: "Here we go. We're back in November across Scotland, England and Wales to play our biggest run of shows ever. "The Prime Minister himself cant stop could stop sending bombs to Israel but that's another story..." ‌ Alongside their tour poster - which shows the trio in a bright green car emblazoned with the phrase "Irish Independence Traders" - the band also made a nod to their political stance. The car's number plate reads "26+6=1," a well-known slogan advocating for a united Ireland, referring to the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland and the 6 counties of Northern Ireland coming together as one. ‌ Their winter tour follows controversy earlier this year when Kneecap were originally headlining the King Tut's stage at TRNSMT 2025 but were dropped from the line-up in May after Police Scotland raised public safety concerns. At the time, a Police Scotland spokesperson stated: "Any decision on the line-up at TRNSMT is for the organisers, and there was no prior consultation with Police Scotland before acts were booked. "Officers have highlighted that the potential reaction of such a large audience to this band would require a significant policing operation in order to support the delivery of a safe event. ‌ "We have also passed on information from the public around safety concerns to allow organisers to make an informed decision on the running of the festival." Following their removal, Kneecap instead played a sold-out show at Glasgow's O2 Academy on Tuesday, July 8 - the week of the festival - insisting they wouldn't let fans down. Over 2,500 tickets were snapped up in just 80 seconds. Now, the trio is scaling up, preparing for their biggest Scottish show yet at the 14,000-capacity OVO Hydro.

Wait, don't I know you? Five debuts from performers you already know this Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Miss Frisky Yes, it is Frisky of Frisky and Mannish fame and yes it is solo Frisky this year as the Queen of pop-mash-parodic-stereophonic-vaudevillian-infotainment returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with her own band. Better still, the band are all Scottish based performers at the top of their game – what's not to love. Frisky promises the same quick quips and amazing three octaves of talent but places control into the hands of the audience. Frisky's Reshuffle is just that, a new playlist each night decided by yours truly. While Mannish aka Matthew Floyd Jones popped off to compose and provide musical direction for such smashes as Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder!, Frisky has been one of the most in demand cabaret emcees across London, with residencies around Europe and gigs the world over. Barnie Duncan But not as you know him. Cut DJ and calypso and soca expert Juan Vesuvius built up a following in the 2010s with Calypso Nights; Juan, Two and I am your Deejay, and in 2025, the man hiding under the samba sleeves, Barnie Duncan, steps onto the stage for his debut stand-up show. In the comic's surreal and subversive style, Oooky Pooky takes down the manosphere with playful, physical comedy as performed for NZ Prime Minster Jacinda Arden. Michael Elsener If you're a fan of a late-night Edinburgh Fringe line-up show, or Russel Howard, you will already know Michael. But, despite having the nickname 'the Swiss John Oliver' – this may be your introduction to the political comedian who asks if his secret Swiss recipe can save the world. Fresh from supporting Russell Howard on his European Tour and Winner of Best Solo Show at the Swiss Comedy Awards 2024, Michael Elsener holds the keys to paradise. Will you join him there? Jonny Woo Legendary East End London performer Jonny Woo heads to arts venue Summerhall with a new show, Surbubia, about his life growing up, the stories of queer elders who weren't afforded the respect they deserved. A return to his spoken word, storytelling and performance art roots, Suburbia brings audiences on a heady journey from the Medway suburbs, through the streets of New York and. And not shying away from how we usually see Jonny Woo, in Night at the Musicals with Le Gateau Chocolat or in a drag line up show - of course, there's a musical number or two. Dangerous Goods Just shy of 10 years ago, a cohort of incredible women took the festival by storm, selling out show after show with audiences meeting them across the city in their recognisable tracksuits sharing 'smash the patriarchy' moments with fans. They were Hot Brown Honey. The creative team behind Hot Brown Honey, including co-creator, director and performer Lisa Fa'alafi are back with Dangerous Goods. Hot Brown Honey conquered Glastonbury, the Southbank Centre London, Freedom Festival Hull and Dublin Fringe all from the initial outpouring of love they experienced at the Edinburgh Fringe. The co-directors Fa'alafi and Leah Shelton say: 'Depending on who you ask, different voices throughout history have been seen as dangerous. The systems that govern our everyday lives are often the ones defining this notion and we see it still today molding our opinions of each other.' This new show claims to be empowering, unapologetic, hot-as-hell cabaret. All tickets available now from 1 . Briefs to see the Blowin in the Wind star were being offered on sites for five times their original value moments after the 10am kick off today. But disappointed fans face being overcharged to see their idol as ruthless touts set inflated prices for his only Scots shows. Website Viagogo had tickets for sale for £685 each within an hour of his Glasgow show being released. The site also had tickets being offered for £667 and £394 a piece. The shows will be phone-free and concert goers will be asked to put their devices into a pouch until the end of the gig. It comes a week after Lewis Capaldi fans raged at greedy touts who were flogging tickets for the star's comeback shows at eyewatering prices. Seats for the OVO Hydro shows in Glasgow are being flogged on Viagogo for as much as £468. And entry to Capaldi's Aberdeen concerts could set desperate punters back as much £407. Dylan performed in Scotland last November where he told the crowd: 'We could play here every night, actually. Can't wait to come back.' The tour dates come amid a fresh surge in interest in the singer's career following the release of his biopic A Complete Unknown last year. Actor Timothee Chalamet starred as Dylan in the film which followed the story of his career beginnings and infamous decision to go electric in the mid-1960s. The Hurricane singer will also play in Leeds, Belfast and Dublin. Dylan is one of the most famous songwriters of all-time, winning 10 Grammys and being nominated on 38 further occasions. He has had six UK top 10 singles and nine UK number one albums. Born Robert Zimmerman, Dylan burst on to the folk scene in the early 1960s before controversially picking up an electric guitar on stage in 1965. He has sold more than 125million records and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 — the first songwriter to receive such a distinction. Dylan owned a huge Highland mansion near Nethy Bridge for over 20 years which he used as a hideout. He sold it in 2023 for more than over £4m. Dylan is among several musicians and comedians to introduce restrictions on mobile phones at their performances in recent years. Sir Andy Murray also imposed a phone ban at his recent shows discussing his career. 4 Dylan in his younger days Credit: Alamy
