RPCAU develops 3 maize varities suited for Bihar's conditions

Patna: In a major stride for agricultural innovation, scientists at Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU) have unveiled three new maize varieties poised to transform maize cultivation across eastern India.
The newly introduced varieties include, Rajendra Baby Corn-1 – a region-specific baby corn hybrid tailored for Bihar's agro-climatic conditions; Rajendra Pop Corn-1 – a high-yielding popcorn hybrid, and Shaktiman-5 – a biofortified quality protein maize.
Developed by the maize breeding team at Tirhut College of Agriculture (TCA), Dholi, Rajendra Baby Corn-1 is expected to offer a profitable and sustainable crop alternative for small and marginal farmers.
"Baby corn enjoys strong market demand, particularly in urban areas and food processing industries. However, a hybrid suited to Bihar's unique conditions was missing. Our aim was to bridge that gap," said maize scientist Ajay Kumar.
What makes this hybrid exceptional is its short growing duration and ready to harvest in just two months and its ability to produce 12 to 15 quintals per hectare of fresh baby corn, along with 200–300 quintals per hectare of green fodder, making it a dual-purpose crop.

Experts believe that this innovation can significantly contribute to the state's goal of crop diversification, doubling farmers' income, and establishing agro-processing linkages. For farmers seeking quick returns, nutrition, and market potential, Rajendra Baby Corn-1 is not just a variety — it's an opportunity.
The Rajendra Pop Corn-1 variety is specially tailored for Bihar's agro-climatic conditions.
It offers farmers an attractive alternative to traditional grain maize, with the added advantage of tapping into the growing demand for packaged popcorn in urban markets.
This hybrid variety matures in just 80 to 90 days, making it suitable for Rabi and late Kharif seasons. It yields up to 30-40 quintals per hectare, outperforming several existing varieties. Most impressively, it boasts a popping expansion ratio of 34–36 cc/g and a popping percentage of over 95%, producing soft, butterfly-type flakes ideal for commercial sale.
The biofortified 'Shaktiman-5' variety offers a unique solution to a dual challenge faced in eastern India: protein malnutrition and low farm returns. It has been bred to contain elevated levels of lysine and tryptophan, essential amino acids often lacking in conventional maize. These nutrients are vital for human growth, immune function, and child development, particularly in regions where cereals dominate the diet.
Beyond its agronomic merits, Shaktiman-5 is aligned with key national priorities such as PoshanAbhiyan, the National Biofortification Mission, and the Public Distribution System (PDS). It as an ideal food for mid-day meal schemes, anganwadi nutrition programmes, and livestock feed improvement, said RPCAU vice-chancellor P S Pandey.

Iconic Charbagh station wheeling towards a modern makeover
Come 2026, the railway's architectural gem will get two massive concourses, which will handle a rush of up to 10,000 passengers daily and offer a bouquet of facilities to travellers. The iconic Charbagh railway station building is a testament to Lucknow's cultural tapestry, weaving together Awadh's regal charm and British architectural finesse. Since its inception in 1926, this architectural gem—known for its unique design that muffles the clamour of trains—has been a bustling gateway for travellers. Now, it's poised for a major transformation, as the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has laid out a Rs 420 crore redevelopment project to turn Charbagh into a world-class transit hub that blends heritage with cutting-edge functionality. A Vision for the future The project encompassing both the Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway zones will accommodate a staggering 1.40 lakh passengers daily while ensuring seamless connectivity, sustainability, and passenger comfort. The station's redevelopment is a delicate balancing act—preserving its historical essence while introducing modern amenities to meet the demands of a rapidly growing city. At the heart of the transformation are two massive concourses: a 120 metres x 115 metres structure for NR and a 75m x 30m concourse for NER, designed to handle peak-hour crowds of up to 10,000 passengers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo These concourses will be interconnected by multiple foot overbridges (FOBs), including Metro-integrated FOBs, ensuring effortless movement across platforms and city sides. 'The idea is seamless movement,' said a rail official. The western FOB will link directly to the Lucknow Metro's Charbagh station, connecting both NER station and NR concourses, with escalators and lifts for accessibility. The eastern FOB will tie Station Road and Kanpur Road directly to platform No. 1 and further. Elevating the passenger experience A sprawling ground plus six-floor building spanning 45,270 square metres at the rear will house airconditioned waiting areas, food courts, dormitories, and commercial spaces. New blocks on the east and west will enhance accessibility and aesthetics, while dedicated drop-off/pick-up zones and widened roads will ease traffic congestion. Parking facilities for 900 two-wheelers and 900 four-wheelers will cater to the station's bustling traffic. Passenger amenities are at the core of the design. Retiring rooms, cloakrooms, medical facilities, CCTV surveillance, baggage scanners, and smart signage systems will elevate the travel experience. The NR zone, which currently has nine platforms, will get two more — all 11 platforms to be accessible via the elevated concourse. This concourse will double as a vibrant hub with waiting areas, shops, and other facilities for travellers. Sustainability and innovation Sustainability is woven into the project's core. Rainwater harvesting systems, stormwater management, and landscaped public spaces reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship. The use of pre-engineered buildings, modular construction, and building information modelling ensures precision and efficiency, minimizing waste and maximizing durability. Progress amid challenges The transformation is well underway, with over 84% of the rear station building structure complete. Platform panel casting is finished, and external development is progressing. An integrated running room with 326 beds and a new workshop store are ready for handover. However, the journey hasn't been without hurdles. The rear entry project, initially slated for completion by Dec 2025, has been delayed to May 2026 due to challenges like the Kumbh Mela rush, the relocation of railway assets, and land availability issues. A 56-day block is currently in place to develop the concourse over platforms 2 through the rear entry is complete, railway operations will shift to the southern side, freeing up the northern front for Rail Land Development Authority to begin work on the station's iconic facade. Existing railway offices, rest houses, and utility structures are being relocated to make way for these new developments. Honouring a legacy Charbagh's historical significance is not lost in this transformation. The redevelopment respects its 1926 design, celebrated for muffling train sounds legacy, blending timeless elements with modern aesthetics that reflect Lucknow's evolving identity as a vibrant metropolis. A new chapter by 2026 As the project races toward its anticipated completion in the last quarter of 2026, Charbagh railway station is poised to emerge as a beacon of progress, a transit hub that honours its storied past while embracing the future. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warns ChatGPT users of ‘capacity crunches' ahead of GPT-5 launch: ‘Bear with us'
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has asked ChatGPT users for some patience as the company's upcoming feature launches and new model releases could lead to some 'probable hiccups and capacity crunches'. While Altman did not clarify about which exact new models he was talking about, the OpenAI CEO has earlier announced that the company is looking to launch its state of the art GPT-5 model soon. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also looking to release its first ever open-weights model this month as well. Making the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman wrote, 'we have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months--new models, products, features, and more. please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. although it may be slightly choppy, we think you'll really love what we've created for you!' A recent report from The Verge had revealed that OpenAI could release its GPT-5 model in early August. The new model will be the first ever LLM by the ChatGPT maker to come with unified reasoning capabilities, meaning users will not be asked to choose the reasoning model from the model picker for higher reasoning tasks. Instead, the new GPT-5 model will unify the o series and GPT series model by knowing when to think for a long itme or not and 'generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks'. In a recent podcast Altman teased new capabilites of GPT-5 noting that the model helped him answer a difficult email that he should have been able to do but couldn't. Speaking about GPT-5's capabilities Altman noted, "I was testing our new model and I got a question. I got emailed a question that I didn't quite understand. Uh, and I put it in the model, this GPT5, and it answered it perfectly and I really kind of sat back in my chair and I was just like a, oh man, here it is moment and I got over it quickly. 'I felt like useless relative to the AI in this thing that I felt like I should have been able to do and I couldn't and it was really hard, but the AI just did it like that.' he added GPT-5 free tier users will get unlimited chats at the standard intelligence setting while Plus subscribers will get the ability to run GPT-5 at a 'higher level of inelligence' and Pro subscribers will be able to run the latest model at an 'even higher level of intelligence', Altman had said earlier in the year.
