Opposition meets EC, opposes Bihar poll roll revision
Leaders from 11 parties, including the Congress, RJD, CPM, CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, NCP-SP and Samajwadi Party met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other election commissioners, objecting to the special scrutiny being conducted just a few months ahead of the assembly election in the state.
The INDIA bloc parties have been vocal in their opposition to the exercise of the Special Intensive Revision, which has already started in Bihar, and is to be carried out in five more states -- Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal -- that are going to polls next year.
Speaking to media after the meeting, Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi said they also protested against the new directive of the poll panel for entry to the Election Commission premises that ask only party presidents to appear before it.

JMM urges SC to declare SIR unconstitutional
Dharwad: The Janandolan Maha Maitri (JMM), a branch of National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR), has criticised the Election Commission of India for taking up SIR (Special Intensive Revision) in Bihar and has termed it as an ill-advised move. Speaking to media in Dharwad JMM chief and anti-graft activist SR Hiremath urged the Supreme Court of India to declare SIR as unconstitutional and uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution. He stated that SIR violates Articles 14, 19, 21, 325, and 326 of the Constitution, as it contravenes the provisions of the Representation of the People's Act, 1950, and Rule 21A of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. If SIR is not set aside by the SC, it can arbitrarily and without due process disenfranchise crores of voters (as much as 30 to 50% of the country) from electing their representatives, thereby disrupting free and fair elections and democracy in the country, which are part of basic structure of the Constitution, Hiremath said. "This would be totally against the bold experiment of Universal Franchise pledged by our Founding Fathers, who enshrined it in Constitution will be negated. It is important to identify and expose the powers that be, who have made the ECI do this 'retrograde' and 'dangerous move' of the ECI," he added. Bihar electoral survey throws up foreigners with fake papers, RJD rubbishes findings
1 2 3 Patna: Bihar's ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls has unearthed an unspecified number of illegal immigrants from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar residing in the state and aiming to become voters with Aadhaar, ration cards and domicile certificates acquired through fraud, Election Commission sources said Sunday based on reports from booth-level officers. The purported findings of the door-to-door voter verification campaign have already become a political hot potato, with RJD's Tejashwi Prasad Yadav dismissing these as "rubbish". EC is still to make an official statement, but officials said the final electoral rolls would be purged of anyone flagged as a foreigner during the survey. The rolls are to be published on Sept 30. The house-to-house verification exercise started on June 25 with the focus on verifying places of birth. Teams conducting the survey have found "a considerable number of people from neighbouring countries" during their visits across the state, sources said. CIA in White House: Issue being probed, says Ford
Chicago, July 13: Charges that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had penetrated the White House during the Nixon Administration were being investigated, President Ford said on Saturday. He expressed confidence that the facts would become known as a result of his own efforts, the expected inquiry by Congress and digging by the American press. Mr. Ford was replying to questions at a news conference here. Asked about alleged CIA penetration of the White House and other Government departments, Mr. Ford replied: 'As far as I know personally, there are no people presently employed in the White House who have relationships with the CIA of which I am personally unaware.' Mr. Ford's denial came at the end of a week which heard allegations, during a Senate Committee Inquiry into alleged illegal activities of the CIA, that the Agency had men within the White House. One report had linked Alexander Butterfield, a former high-ranking White House official to the CIA, but Mr. Ford said there was no precise information on this. Mr. Butterfield disclosed to the committee looking into the Watergate scandals that Presidential conversations at the White House had been taperecorded.
