Trial begins for Florida man accused in Trotwood shootout, police pursuit

Yahoo07-04-2025
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Jury Trial began Monday for the man accused of leading police on a chase, resulting in a shootout and violent crash.
On Jan. 9, 2024, James Skirvin reportedly got into a fight with his daughter at a trailer park in Trotwood. Witnesses say Skirvin ran over his daughter before police were called and he led them on a chase on US-35.
Police say Skirvin fired at officers with a long gun before crashing into a police cruiser, heavily damaging both vehicles.
Skirvin is now facing several charges, including domestic violence and felonious assault on a police officer.
The trial was pushed back from its original date in December 2024 after Skirvin's attorney cited newly discovered evidence. But on Monday, April 7, 14 jurors were selected — 12 seated and two alternates — before the trial began with opening statements.
The prosecution began by sharing just how many people were put in danger by 'only about 30 minutes of actions' by Skirvin.
'That is why at the end of this week, we will ask that you hold the defendant responsible for his actions and find him guilty of all charges,' said the prosecution.
Skirvin's defense reminded the jury that this would be an intense case that needs thorough examination.
'It's going to be a lot of emotional, very emotional testimony. But we ask you to sit back and listen to all the testimony and bring in all the facts and all the videos and all the evidence as you consider these charges,' said the defense.
Five witnesses were called to the stand on the first day, including the 911 caller from the trailer park and Skirvin's brother.
Trial will resume tomorrow morning. Stay with 2 NEWS for updates.

El Paso Police fight back vs. catalytic converter theft with VIN etching event

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Police Department and Take 5 Oil Change are taking 'proactive steps' to protect vehicle owners from the rising threat of catalytic converter theft. To that end, they will host a Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 26 at Take 5 Oil, 1341 N. Zaragoza. The event will offer vehicle owners free VIN etching services. El Paso has reported more than 800 catalytic converter thefts during the past three years, El Paso Police said. To help deter these crimes, the El Paso Police Department is providing free vehicle identification number (VIN) etching on catalytic converters. This process involves permanently marking the vehicle's VIN onto the converter, making it more difficult for thieves to sell the stolen part without proof of ownership, police said. This is a preventative measure aimed at reducing thefts and helping identify stolen property more easily, police said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Arab media claims Hamas fears possible joint US-Israeli ops. to free hostages in Gaza

Other Hamas and Palestinian sources said that Hamas captors have been instructed to murder any live hostages if the IDF gets close. The Hamas terrorist organization fears the possibility of a joint US-Israeli military operation to rescue hostages in the Gaza Strip, according to a Saturday report by Arabic-language source Asharq Al-Awsat. The source reportedly learned from Hamas that the terror group implemented security measures to prevent attempts by Israeli forces or any others to access locations where hostages, alive or dead, are being kept. Hamas terrorists were instructed to monitor any and all activity they deem suspicious and find out if anyone is collaborating with Israel, according to the report. Other Hamas and Palestinian sources cited by Asharq Al-Awsat stated that Hamas captors have been instructed to murder any living hostages if the IDF gets close. However, this order was reportedly revoked during the ceasefire that had taken effect in January of this year. It has since been reinstated, the report noted. The report was published after the US and Israeli negotiating teams departed Qatar on Thursday, where US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that the terrorist organization showed "a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza." "While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith. We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home," he said. US, Israel considering alternative options to bring back hostages Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said that the two countries were looking for alternative options for bringing the hostages home. Coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing Persons Brig.-Gen. (Res.) Gal Hirsch said that the Israeli team's return from Qatar was intended to provide advice on how to narrow the gaps in the negotiations. 'In the face of many difficulties that Hamas has posed and is posing, we have continuously and resolutely exhausted every chance and possibility of reaching an agreement, and we will continue to do so," he said. However, Israeli officials told The Jerusalem Post on Friday that Israel still believes that Hamas is interested in a deal, 'but they're trying to squeeze every possible advantage, provoking and appeasing all the extremist factions within Gaza." Hamas has resorted to delaying tactics, reintroducing previously resolved issues, and making "outlandish" demands, the officials added. Amichai Stein contributed to this report.
