Sony sues Tencent over its Horizon Zero Dawn clone

Engadget4 days ago
Sony is suing Tencent for copying nearly every aspect of its Horizon games for the upcoming Light of Motiram , an open-world hunting game with some obvious similarities to Sony's franchise, as first reported by Reuters . Tencent first announced the new game in November 2024.
The lawsuit goes into detail on the various ways Tencent's new game appears to be unlawfully copying memorable aspects of Horizon Zero Dawn , Horizon Forbidden West and Lego Horizon Adventures . That include the basic setup of the game (a post-apocalyptic setting where tribes of humans coexist with machines), the visual appearance of Light of Motiram 's characters and even how Sony presents the franchise online. It all adds up to what Sony describes as a "slavish clone" of the Horizon franchise, something Engadget and other publications easily clocked when Tencent first announced the game.
The most damning part of Sony's lawsuit is its claim that Tencent tried to license the Horizon IP before it even announced Light of Motiram . The company wanted to "develop its own Horizon game in collaboration with SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment)," Sony claims, and proposed licensing the Horizon IP to create a mobile game that introduced "Eastern aesthetics" and elements like "survival and crafting, pet taming, [multiplayer game modes], etc." After Sony rejected the offer, Tencent announced Light of Motiram anyway, with many of the mechanics it pitched and using many recognizable visual elements of the Horizon franchise.
In response to the damage and customer confusion caused by Tencent making Light of Motiram , Sony wants an injunction that prevents Tencent from continuing to develop or release the game, along with money and the destruction of anything related to Light of Motiram . The ball is in Tencent's court to argue otherwise, which seems like it might be difficult.

Josh Greenstein Leaving Sony for Major Role at Paramount Once Skydance Merger Closes

It's all but official: Sony Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein will depart the studio for a top job under David Ellison once the $8 billion Paramount Global-Skydance merger closes, sources confirm. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report this spring that Greenstein would be part of the upper management team installed by Ellison at the newly configured conglomerate. It's not clear exactly what his job will be, but it's expected to extend beyond only Paramount Pictures. Hours after this story was published, Sony confirmed Greenstein's exit, although without mentioning Paramount. It's not clear whether Ellison will wait until then to officially announce his roster of executives beyond what's already known. Skydance declined to comment regarding Greenstein. Greenstein has a longstanding relationship with Skydance chief David Ellison and chief creative officer Dana Goldberg, who will likewise play a major role at the newly merged company. At Sony, Greenstein shared president title with Sanford Panitch, with both reporting directly to Sony Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman, who recently reupped his contract. Prior to Sony, Greenstein worked at Paramount Pictures, heading up marketing and distribution. It was during that time that he got to know Ellison, whose company co-financed some of Paramount's biggest franchises, including Mission: Impossible. When arriving at Sony, Greenstein likewise first focused on marketing and distribution, but then moved up the ranks to co-head the motion picture group, where he helps oversee all aspects of the development and creative process in addition to a film's release. The titles he's worked on at Sony include Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home; the two Venom movies; A Man Called Otto; Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood; Jumanji: The Next Level; Little Women; Bad Boys for Life; Ghostbusters: Afterlife; Uncharted, The Woman King, Where the Crawdads Sing and, most recently, 28 Years Later. Sony Shake-Up: Peter Kang Elevated to Head of Columbia, Marketing Execs Upped

The executive ranks at Sony's movie studio are getting a shake-up, with Peter Kang being promoted to president of production of Columbia Pictures and Josh Greenstein stepping down as president of the Motion Picture Group. Sony brass officially confirmed the two moves hours after word broke that Greenstein is going to work for David Ellison in a major role once Skydance closes its $8 billion merger with Paramount Global. Earlier this year, Tom Rothman signed a multi-year extension on his contract as the chairman-CEO of Sony Pictures' Motion Picture Group, signaling that the top job isn't available as of yet. Kang joined Sony in 2019 from Lionsgate, where he served as co-president of production. He is a veteran of Paramount and 20th Century, working on projects that include the Planet of the Apes franchise and Gone Girl. Panitch joined Sony in 2015 and a year later was named the president of Columbia Pictures. In 2019, he was promoted to president of the Motion Picture Group alongside Greenstein. Prior to Sony, he held positions at 20th Century (née Fox) and founded Fox International Productions. While Greenstein shared creative oversight with Panitch as co-president of the Motion Picture Group, he came from the marketing and distribution side of the aisle initially. In the wake of his departure, Danielle Misher, head of theatrical marketing, and Steven O'Dell, president of international marketing and distribution, will continue to oversee the marketing operation at the Motion Picture Group. The duo will now report directly to Rothman instead of Greenstein. Also on the marketing side, Nicholas Weiss and Dave Fruchbom have been promoted to co-heads of Global Creative and Strategy, reporting to Misher and working closely with O'Dell on international matters. And in further changes on the production side in the wake of Kang's promotion, 35-year Sony veteran Andrea Giannetti has been elevated to EVP, production and senior creative at Columbia Pictures. Kang and Giannetti will continue to report to Panitch. 'We are all sorry to see Josh go. He has been a wonderful colleague for many years, and we wish him the very best,' Rothman said. 'The key to a sound organization, however, is to have a strong bench. Our marketing group has that, and I am very pleased to recognize some of our outstanding longtime talent with expanded roles. Dave and Nick are two of the finest creative advertising minds I have encountered in my many years of doing this, and Danielle and Steven provide expert, experienced leadership. I am confident our marketing prowess will only grow.' Rothman continued, 'Likewise, Peter is one of the most skillful and dedicated production executives in all of Hollywood. Sanford and I have worked with him off and on for over 25 years, with great success. I'm sure that Peter will keep the Columbia lady's torch shining brightly, and that Ange will continue to deliver big hit movies, as she always has. And I know I can count on Sanford to embrace his expanded responsibilities. The depth and breadth of his abilities are unmatched and critical to our success.' Sony's upcoming slate includes Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing and Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell's A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, with new installments in the world for the Spider-Man, Jumanji and 28 Years Later film series. 'I'm thrilled to have someone as accomplished and smart as Peter leading Columbia Pictures,' Panitch said. 'And in addition to the pleasure of working with all the many capable executives at each of the divisions I oversee, I feel especially fortunate to collaborate directly with the exceptional Ange Giannetti,' said We have a lot of big event movies moving down our pipeline, so it is a very exciting and promising time at Sony, where we continue to prioritize and prize the theatrical experience.' July 28, 1 p.m. Updated to include the full roster of Sony's moves in the marketing group. A previous version of this story misstated that Sanford Panitch would be receiving a new role at Sony.
