Drug awareness campaigns mark International Day Against Drug Abuse

Madurai/Trichy: In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a series of awareness events were organised in Madurai and Trichy on Thursday, aiming to educate the public—especially students—about the dangers of substance abuse.
In Madurai, a human chain rally was flagged off by Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar from the Collectorate. The rally, under the theme "Drug-Free Tamil Nadu," involved around 300 college students raising awareness against drug abuse. At Madurai Medical College, the department of psychiatry organized competitions on topics related to drug abuse prevention, with events such as poetry, poster-making, slogan-writing, and short films.
Winners were awarded prizes at a ceremony presided over by the college dean, Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar.
In a similar event, Madurai city police commissioner J Loganathan launched a drug-free awareness rally organized by the anti-drug club of Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College. Approximately 1,000 students participated, pledging to stay away from drugs. The rally, which proceeded from the college to Pasumalai, featured students carrying placards and raising slogans to discourage drug use.
Similar programs were organized by other schools and colleges in the city.
In Trichy, over 250 participants took part in a rally organized by the department of psychiatry at KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. The rally, which began at the Collector's Office and ended at the college auditorium, was followed by awareness lectures focused on this year's theme: "Breaking the Chains! Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All.
" Trichy district collector V Saravanan administered an anti-drug pledge and flagged off the rally. Dr. S. Kumaravel, Dean of KAP Medical College, emphasized that addiction is a "whirlpool" that can pull people in without their knowledge, urging the public to resist not just narcotics, but also dependencies on tobacco, electronic devices, and internet overuse.
Meanwhile, students at Government High School, Kalkandar Fort, participated in an anti-drug program titled "Don't Enter Our Area," aimed at curbing the sale and use of drugs near educational institutions. The event featured speeches by Prabhu, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, and senior defense advocate Saraboji, who warned students about the dangers of evil influences. Students took an anti-drug pledge and wore badges with the message "Say No to Drugs.
" They also visited nearby shops to ensure compliance with regulations against drug sales near schools.

Shed collapses at Andhra's Simhachalam temple, none hurt
VISAKHAPATNAM: A temporary shed under construction near Tholipavancha along the Giri Pradakshina route at The Simhachalam Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple experienced a collapse on Saturday, occurring just days before the annual Giri Pradakshina set for July 9. Thankfully, there were no injuries since no devotees were present at the time. Officials indicated that the shed fell during preparation activities. Witnesses reported that the structure failed due to inadequate support unable to sustain the weight of iron sheets. Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad, during a press conference at the Collectorate, stated, 'The sheds are being constructed for the upcoming Giri Pradakshina. One of the sheds slipped while workers were securing it.' When questioned about the safety protocols and the contractor responsible, the Collector replied, 'All details concerning the incident, including the contractor involved and the safety measures implemented, will be thoroughly investigated.' Authorities have been instructed to examine and assess all temporary structures to prevent similar incidents during the festival, which attracts lakhs of pilgrims each year. This incident follows a previous safety issue at the temple during Chandanotsavam, where a section of a wall collapsed, resulting in the death of eight devotees. The successive mishaps have raised concerns about the safety standards for large religious gatherings.

11 colleges join hands with MBVV Police for drug-free awareness campaign
VASAI: On the occasion of 26 June – International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Branch of the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate conducted a concluding rally for its awareness campaign titled 'Nashamukti' (Drug-Free). This campaign was held across educational institutions and colleges located in Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar in which 11 colleges participated. The aim was to educate youth about the harmful effects of drugs and to encourage them to stay drug-free. The operation, according to officials, targeted young people via social media platforms, and was announced as part of the UAE's nationwide campaign marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Candy-Laced Drugs Worth Dh2 Million Seized The criminal network was in possession of 50 kilograms of drugs and 1,100 pieces of drug-laced sweets, with a street value estimated at Dh2 million ($544,588 USD), Dubai Police revealed during a press conference held at Dubai Festival City. 'Families play a central role in educating their children about the risks of the digital world, especially when it comes to drug promotion or other criminal activities online.' He warned that the average time individuals spend online is seven hours per day, significantly increasing their exposure to harmful or illegal content. While police systems are in place to monitor suspicious activity online, community and family involvement remain crucial. 'We call on families to monitor what their children are browsing, the messages they receive, and any suspicious packages or online purchases,' Al-Maamari added. 'It's not just the job of police, it's a shared responsibility.' Expanding Awareness Through Community Campaigns T o combat such threats, Dubai Police have scaled up public awareness programmes targeting a wide range of groups including students, parents, blue-collar workers, and delivery drivers. 'We visited labour camps, schools, shopping malls and corporate offices,' Al-Maamari said. 'This year, we expanded our awareness efforts to four major exhibitions instead of one. We reached 270,000 school students and more than 20,000 university students.' Dubai Police also conduct youth training programmes during summer holidays, focused on critical issues such as cybercrime, bullying, substance abuse, and safe digital behaviour. 'This year, the International Protection Centre trained more than 1,300 students across 26 centres,' he stated. 'We aim to build security awareness in every age group.' We ensure full confidentiality for all reports,' Al-Maamari explained. He also pointed to Article 89 of the UAE's Anti-Narcotics Law, which offers immunity from legal prosecution to individuals who voluntarily seek treatment or are assisted by family to do so. 'Last year, we saw a significant increase in people coming forward for treatment,' he said. 'We want the community to know our goal is protection, not punishment.' A Proactive Strategy Against Drug Crime According to Al-Maamari, Dubai Police continuously analyse criminal patterns using data from intelligence reports and police cases. This insight is used to shape more effective awareness and intervention strategies. 'Our strategy is proactive. We don't wait for a crisis to happen. We monitor trends, design targeted campaigns, and act early,' he said.
