Thrifting was made for times like these.
A prolonged period of high living costs and consumer pushback against the excesses of fast fashion has led to soaring interest in buying secondhand clothes and pre-owned homewares.
Big business is tapping into the trend, drawing mixed reactions from thrifters accustomed to spending their money at charitable op shops.
Late last year, the private equity-backed Savers, a firm listed in the US, opened a store on Oxford Street, one of Sydney's primary shopping precincts. Months earlier, it had unveiled a sprawling superstore in the city's west.
In the next few months, it plans to open stores in Sydney's inner west on the bustling Parramatta Road, and in the city's outskirts in Marsden Park.
The Sydney expansion builds on the outlet's long-term presence in Melbourne and Adelaide.
Savers, the biggest for-profit thrift retailer in North America, has found financial favour in Australia, with quarterly sales jumping to US$30.7m in the March quarter, up almost 12% from a year earlier.

Overall, the company generated US$1.54bn in sales in 2024 through its network of more than 350 stores, mainly located in the US and Canada.
Caitie Pridmore, a longtime op shopping enthusiast, says she is more inclined to shop at charity-run op shops than Savers, but any arguments against for-profit thrift stores should be nuanced.
'It comes down to … the intention as the consumer, and then the intention as the retailer of the op shop,' she says.
'With Savers, it's an interesting one. I feel less compelled to shop there.'
Pridmore says while there is a charitable element to the way Savers operates, she prefers to spend her money in op shops where she knows her contributions are going to have 'more of an impact on the community'.
For-profit thrift retailers tend to do well in markets where customers are conscious about their spending, but not under so much financial pressure that they stop buying altogether.
This is representative of conditions in Australia, where households are grappling with cost-of-living pressures, but most people have a job, with unemployment at a low level of 4.1%.
Michael Fisher, the managing director at Savers Australia, said in a statement that secondhand shopping served as a meaningful and sustainable way for consumers to stretch their dollars in the current economic climate.
'We are competitively positioned in the retail sector with a hyperlocal model, an average price per item of less than $10, and a fresh assortment that provides exceptional value to consumers,' Fisher said.
The Savers model relies on donations of clothes and small household items to its charitable partners, including Red Nose, Wounds Australia and Diabetes Victoria, which are either collected by the not-for-profits or through donation centres attached to the stores.
Savers then pays the charities for those goods.
The Wounds Australia chief executive, Jeff Antcliff, said the organisation had been 'thrilled with the exposure' the partnership had brought and that the relationship provided revenue to support the organisation's work in advocating for those living with chronic wounds.
Savers' charitable partners, including Wounds Australia, said the rates paid by Savers were confidential.
In the US, Savers has faced questions over the transparency of its relationships with nonprofit partners, and the rates it pays.

The office of the Washington attorney general said in 2017 that Savers' parent company was paying one of its charitable partners as little as four pennies for every pound of clothing. Other goods, like housewares, earned the charities 2 US cents per pound.
Savers did not respond to questions about the per-kilo rate it pays in Australia.
Fisher said the company had paid its Australian not-for-profit partners about $20m for secondhand goods over the last five years.
'Last year alone, we found a reuse for over 9.1 million kilograms of secondhand items,' Fisher said in a statement.
One of Savers' partners, Diabetes Victoria, disclosed in financial accounts that about 4.8m kgs of clothes and other products went to Savers in 2024, and that the charity had earned $2.98m from its collections business.
While this would imply a rate of about 62c per kilo, the calculation could be complicated by donations of different types of goods attracting different rates.
The Diabetes Victoria chief executive, Glen Noonan, said the Savers partnership had 'played a vital role in advancing our efforts to raise funds for much needed diabetes programs, advocacy and world-leading diabetes research'.
The thrifting sector has changed significantly from the days of being almost exclusively run by charities.
Another for-profit model, consignment stores, allows people to sell unwanted clothes for lower-than-retail prices if they don't want to give them away for free.
Bec Brewin, a keen op-shopper who creates thrifting content for social media, says e-commerce platforms like Depop facilitate a more sustainable economy, even though 'you're not donating to a charity, you're donating to somebody's wallet'.
'As long as you're aware of the fact that you're shopping at a for-profit thrift shop or op shop, it's fine. You're still making a more sustainable choice,' she says.
Vicky Weatherlake, who runs an online thrifting community I Love To Op Shop which includes a Facebook group with more than 122,000 members, says she supports the Savers business model.
'I'm not wasting time criticising Savers for not being not-for-profit when we have [fast fashion platforms] doing huge environmental damage,' she says, referring to mass market retailers selling ultra cheap clothing.
'Is [Savers] competitive with op shops? Yes, certainly – but from my personal point of view, it's more environmentally friendly.'
'We've got far bigger fish to fry than pulling Savers up on being a for-profit business, when it actually gets through so much goods that people are just not wanting any more,' she says.

The Victorian government is set to enshrine the right to work from home in law, with sweeping reforms that will apply across both the public and private sectors. Premier Jacinta Allan will unveil the landmark policy at the annual state Labor conference, describing it as a progressive move to modernise the workforce and support families. 'Across the country, Liberals are drawing up plans to abolish work-from-home and force workers back to the office, and back to the past. 'That's why the Allan Labor government is acting. Enshrining work from home in law means this life-changing practice isn't something you or your loved ones have to politely ask for. It's a right you'll be entitled to.' The proposed legislation would give workers a legal right to request remote work two days a week if they can 'reasonably' perform their duties from home. Employers would be required to give the requests proper consideration, with a formal consultation process set to begin soon as the legislation is introduced later this year. Ms Allan also pointed to the cost of living relief the policy would offer, estimating it could save workers around $110 per week, or more than $5,300 a year in commuting and related expenses. 'Work from home supports women with children, carers, and people with a disability to work,' she said. 'Thanks to work from home, workforce participation is 4.4 per cent higher than before the pandemic.' Opposition Leader Brad Battin has dismissed claims the Liberals opposed the laws, telling Daily Mail the party supports work-from-home flexibility. 'The Victorian Liberals and Nationals recognise that working from home has become a valuable option for many workers and families,' Mr Battin said. 'We support measures that help Victorians enjoy a better work-life balance and will review any legislation closely, to ensure it supports flexibility, productivity, and personal choice.' His comments contrast with those of former federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who was forced to retreat from a policy limiting work-from-home rights for public servants after widespread backlash during the last election campaign. In addition to the proposed work-from-home reforms, Victorian Labor will also debate a raft of controversial policy ideas at the state conference on Saturday, including new taxes and major social reforms. More than 600 party delegates, including MPs, grassroots members and union representatives, will vote on a series of proposals that could shape the ALP's platform ahead of the 2026 state election. Among the most contentious items is a push to raise taxes on Victorian residents, despite the state already being the most heavily taxed in the country. Other proposals include introducing a super profits tax on land sales and legalising cannabis for recreational use. The outcomes of the weekend's debate will play a critical role in defining Premier Jacinta Allan's policy agenda over the next 18 months, with an election set for November next year.

Two years on from REDcycle's collapse, 94% of Australia's soft plastics are still headed for landfill. Collection has restarted at supermarkets, and 42 warehouses of plastics have been cleared, but experts say the packaging industry must take responsibility for the mess. By July, supermarkets had mostly cleared the stockpiles, which by November 2022 reached 11,000 tonnes of soft plastics at 44 sites across the country, hoards accumulated as collections outstripped available recycling capacity and export restrictions increased the amount of plastic waste in Australia. The remainder – 3,500 tonnes at two sites, in Victoria and in South Australia – is due to be processed in the first half of 2026, according to the supermarket members of the Soft Plastics Taskforce. But as more than 100 new collection points have been rolled out since June in selected Woolworths, Coles and Aldi stores across New South Wales and Victoria, taskforce members have been careful not to collect more than can be processed. 'The biggest challenge still remains that there is simply not enough soft plastic recycling capacity in Australia to support full, nationwide collections,' a spokesperson for the taskforce told the Guardian. Soft plastic is defined by its ability to be scrunched into a ball, unlike 'rigid' plastics, which are moulded to hold their shape. Even at the peak of its operations in 2022, REDcycle was collecting about 7,500 tonnes – less than 2% of the 538,000 tonnes of plastic bags, food wrappers, bubble wrap and other 'flexible' plastic waste produced in Australia each year. 'We still have a real problem in that we consume too much [soft plastics], we discard too much and we don't buy back anywhere near enough,' says Gayle Sloan, the chief executive of the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia. While recyclers are increasing their capacity to process the material, Sloan says other problems remain: the vast quantities produced, design packaging that is too complex to recover and the lack of demand from packaging companies and other consumers for Australian-made recycled plastic. She says the onus should be on plastic manufacturers to invest in facilities to take back their own material. 'We've got to stop putting it on consumers to solve the problem.' Despite national packaging targets set by governments in 2018 for 70% of plastic packaging to be recycled by 2025, only about 6% of used and discarded soft plastics were being baled, sorted, shredded, washed, melted – or chemically processed – and turned into new products, according to data published in December by Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia. The rest has headed to landfill. Consumer plastics collected by households, while the most visible, are only one part of the story. Soft plastics are embedded in so many aspects of modern life, says David Hodge, the managing director of recycling company Plastic Forests. The material is widely used, for example, in sectors such as agriculture for storing grain and preventing weeds, and in transport for wrapping pallets. Consumer materials, particularly those used for foods – frozen produce bags, cereal liners or bread bags – are 'tremendously hard to recycle, some of them impossible', he says. They are often 'super technical', comprising different types of plastic, and contaminated by inks used for advertising, or food residues. While there is value for recyclers in processing plastics, such as PET (or polyethylene terephthalate) in drink bottles collected in container deposit schemes, Hodge says 'the economics is broken in soft plastics' because the energy, labor and transport required to collect, process and recycle them costs more than importing new materials. The lack of incentives or mandates for products made from recycled content – such as fence posts and garden edging, electrical cable cover and plastic sheeting – mean they often struggled to compete with non-recycled products. 'There has to be support for the purchase of products. That will create the pull through,' Hodge says. 'Bunnings needs to be given a federal government mandate to support Australian made recycled products,' he says as an example. Jennifer Macklin, a researcher at Monash University's Sustainable Development Institute, says the solutions to the soft plastics problem are similar to other material and waste challenges. They include designing plastic packaging so it can be more easily recycled (while retaining its function, such as keeping food fresh), developing recycling infrastructure capable of turning large volumes of soft plastic waste into a usable material and – crucially – reinforcing demand for the recovered material. 'That's the big chicken and egg that we have with recycling,' Macklin says. 'We're quite good at collecting and reprocessing but not very good at buying it to turn it into new things.' Consumers have a role to play, she says, but as a general principle producers and importers of plastics should be responsible for the material's entire lifecycle. In late 2024, the federal government consulted on options for reforming plastic packaging. According to its summary, 80% of stakeholders supported regulation, and 65% supported an extended responsibility scheme that would make plastics producers responsible for the entire product lifecycle. The government is now 'working with industry and state and territory governments to deliver fit-for-purpose packaging regulations as part of Australia's transition to a circular economy', a departmental spokesperson said. Sloan says voluntary approaches have failed. 'We need to have clear design standards and they need to be enforceable, and we actually need those who make this to be held accountable and invest in facilities to take it back,' she says. 'We've got to stop putting products out on the market that have no home and can't be recovered.'

Australia's median capital city house price is now above $1million, meaning only dual-income couples or individuals on high salaries can buy a home with a backyard. But rather than work harder in a career role to afford a house, Australia's younger workers are less inclined to do stressful corporate jobs, long-term, if there isn't a meaningful reward or a work-life balance, despite there being a cost-of-living crisis. Jin, 23, is graduating at the end of this year from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science majoring in data science and accounting. He will start a full-time graduate role in January next year and is bracing for the occasional weekend shifts as he helps prepare financial reports for big firms during the twice-yearly earnings seasons. But he is aspiring for some work-life balance in his twenties, including some travel. 'I do think a balance is necessary - if we don't have the correct amount of sleep or just the correct amount of breaks to take our minds off things, it's just very hard for us to stay focused,' he told Daily Mail. 'I do want to explore the world outside of Australia. I want to see and experience different cultures.' He is also hoping to work reasonable hours so he has time for family and a social life. 'I think I have a nice balance right now, where I spend my time with my family and my partner,' he said. 'Once or twice a year, I strive to take a one-week holiday or go on a break with my family or my partner.' Jamie MacLennan, the Asia-Pacific managing director of TELUS Health, said younger workers were less inclined to take on stressful roles, despite needing higher pay to cope with the cost of living crisis. 'People are trying to rebalance and balance the work-life component in a world where we're essentially on 24/7,' he said. 'Somewhere along the line, people have got to earn a living, but then the question is - "What's the cost of making that living?" - that's where people are rebalancing. 'You can't quit completely or at scale - there's always going to be an element of people who do that. 'Whether they take the traditional career paths, whether they aspire to those, creates a bigger dislocation.' Mr MacLennan said the mental health effects of Covid on younger people would create succession planning issues for companies in coming years, as fewer of them aspired to be in senior roles. 'We haven't recovered from Covid - our brains have been rewired. There continues to be a mental health crisis - crisis is not an overstated term in Australian society and it's most acute in that younger generation coming through,' he said. 'People have that sense of missing out - they're in a situation where they can't afford to get what they want or they can't afford to live in the environment that they want.' Stress is now a deal breaker for staff, with recruitment agency Randstad revealing 60 per cent of workers would rather have less stress than more pay. Unbearable demands had seen 40 per cent of workers switch to a lower-paid role. Amelia O'Carrigan, Randstad's director of public sector and business support, said employers couldn't ask staff to work five days in the office without incentives. 'It's not a complete pull back on flexibility and expect that workers will agree to that. In fact, to completely say - "You need to be back into the office five days" I would say would be a risky strategy,' she said. 'As job confidence starts to return, you'd be at risk of employees looking elsewhere.' The Randstad survey of 5,250 workers in Australia, Germany , Italy , Japan , Poland , the UK and the United States found stress to be a major issue. Financial concerns are the biggest driver of personal stress in Australia, with 44 per cent nominating it as a problem, a survey of 1,000 people by TELUS Health found. Unaffordable housing was also cited as a driver, with 18 per cent nominating their housing or living situation as a source of personal stress. While many young people are reconsidering taking on stressful roles, Jin said he would be willing to make sacrifices to one day establish a data-oriented start-up for small businesses, that could use AI to audit their finances in real time. 'If I were to want to live comfortably, or think about having a better life, I would try to branch off into a different industry,' he said. 'If the corporate ladder doesn't work, I'll try my hand with something I like within data science, because I sacrificed it away for stability - I'll try to think about doing a start-up project on the side. 'Earning more money comes with more responsibilities so naturally you come with more stress - probably personally, I think I have pretty good stress management.' 'My goal, before I hit 30, I'll try to get a car that I like, I like sports cars, I want to work towards that. We need goals in life or what are we working for? If we're just working for a living - it's not hard, it would just be very boring.'
