During a farewell courtesy call by German Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Peter Blomeyer, at his office in Putrajaya, Anwar said that comprehensive ties between both nations are expected to further deepen people-to-people connections and contribute to sustainable shared progress.

Ahmad Zahid wants Malaysia's rural agenda to serve as regional model for Asean

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that Malaysia's rural development agenda can serve as a model for the Asean region. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry would continue to elevate the rural development agenda to the regional stage when it hosts the Asean Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Asean Master Plan on Rural Development again this October. In addition, Malaysia would host the Asean+3 Forum on Empowering Rural Women and Digitalisation. "Let us use this platform to showcase our best practices and position Malaysia's rural development agenda as both a regional aspiration and reference point. Malaysia must set the example for the entire region," he said at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's monthly assembly here on Tuesday (July 1). Ahmad Zahid said his ministry has been given the mandate to plan rural community development, with an allocation of nearly RM12bil, of which RM3.37bil has been spent to date. He said the recently launched Desa Kirana initiative was being hailed as a game changer in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. According to him, the initiative aims to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy by empowering cultural heritage, natural attractions, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and a variety of rural-based activities. "I hope to one day see our rural gems - from Arau to Kudat, from Sabah's interior to the coast of Sarawak - emerge as world-class tourist destinations. Just like Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Shirakawa-go in Japan, or Ubud in Bali - places that were once quiet but now stand proudly on the global tourism map," he said. Ahmad Zahid also said that his ministry would organise a three-dimensional Mega Carnival, which will bring together three major events simultaneously: the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival, Felda Settlers' Day, and the One District One Industry initiative. "This marks another major shift - a strategic effort to elevate rural entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the national and international levels," he said. Meanwhile, he also called on the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, to review the existing training system. During the assembly, Ahmad Zahid expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the ministry's staff throughout his 940-day leadership of the ministry. – Bernama

PM chooses key people in govt, not the royals

YOURSAY | 'You either don't understand your role or you don't have the courage.' PM pushes back against lobby to extend CJ's term, calls it politicisation GP20257: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, if you haven't figured it out yet, let me spell it out. The issue isn't that every retiring civil servant should have his/her tenure extended, but the excellent ones should, especially when there's a vacuum in key positions. There was no lack of candidates for the MACC chief or IGP posts, but they were duly filled, not according to normal promotion procedures. In Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's case, it's very clear that a very good CJ is being bypassed, even according to normal procedures. It's not just ordinary people who are asking for her extension, but the Malaysian Bar, respected leaders, and other professionals. To us, it means; 1) Your judgment is flawed and unreliable; 2) You don't understand your role, or you don't have the courage to advise the king on your choice. It's the prime minister who chooses the key people in his or her government, not the royals, as the royals in this country, according to the Federal Constitution, do not govern. Top appointments to the government are the PM's choices. As long as the choices are made according to the constitution, the king makes the PM's choices official. That's the meaning of the king acting on the advice of the PM. It takes a PM with a backbone, not a glib mouth, to advise the king on his role. Apparently, Anwar can't do the job. Just resign and spare us this misgovernance. BobbyO: What a lame excuse. Anwar, do you think the people are fools, or do you think that power is in your hands and you will decide according to your own selfish agenda, just as you did in extending MACC Azam Baki's tenure not once but thrice? Remember, even the toughest and cruellest dictator has fallen, as they think that power is theirs to wield as they like. Remember Umno and jailed former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. They thought that they were unbeatable as they had the finance, resources, and manpower. Look at where they stand today. Such a lame excuse, and Malaysians can very clearly see through you and your motive if you do not want to extend Tengku Maimun's tenure. Why then did you extend Azam's tenure? Is it because it worked in your favour? Was it not a political move? Why were the others due for promotion made to wait? What about the inspector-general of police and his deputy? Why was the deputy not promoted to the next level? It is so clear to see that you are frightened of promoting decent and honest civil servants. Seriously, Anwar, stop taking the people for granted. Umno did, and they lost big - four states to the opposition. What will be PKR's position at the next election? Reduced to the level below MIC and MCA? Half full Cup: Let's face it, our PM does not welcome most of the people's opinions, especially the professional group and his supporters, because he feels he is now the maharaja of the day. In fact, he has even forgotten or refused to recognise who his supporters are for the past 20 over years. The fault lies in his supporters (especially the urban citizens). If we look at what he did when he was in Umno, he was a very racist leader, hence his meteoric rise to be the deputy president of Umno. He was almost on the verge of becoming the president (prime minister). Most of his reforms at the time were very much at the expense of a certain group of people. We have been badly mistaken, or maybe we have fooled ourselves. Has DAP also taken advantage of the people's foolishness to gain power and enjoys that power now? BetterMY: Thank you for shooting yourself in the foot once again! The rakyat is fully aware of your administration's tactics of only retaining those subservient to you. Where you should have retained talent, you let them go, and where you should have dispensed with them, you gleefully retained. We will keep this in mind when voting in the 16th general election. Mind you, we're not racist to completely dispel of BN and PN, there are good administrators there too. It's just a matter of ridding BN and PN of the extremist and corrupt voices. Once that is done, we'll have a credible alternative to your incompetent administration. We have given you an opportunity, and you squandered it. We have given you that opportunity despite your entitled attitude towards the top post since 1998. Your days at the administration are numbered, and you will soon join the one-term PM list. And before any ardent and blind supporters of Pakatan Harapan jump on this, please be known that I have voted for Harapan since GE10. So my thinking is both reflective of the groundswell against Harapan and also the maturing of our electorate. The above is a selection of comments posted by Malaysiakini subscribers. European markets are getting difficult to ignore

Gaining ground: A view outside the London Stock Exchange. Investors are slowing their purchases of US assets and shifting more money to Europe amid concerns that Trump's programme of tariffs and tax cuts will impact earnings and stoke inflation. — AFP LONDON: European stocks outperformed their US peers by the biggest margin on record in dollar terms during the first half, the most dramatic sign of how the region's markets are staging a comeback after more than a decade in the doldrums. The rebound isn't confined to stocks: the euro is up 13% against the dollar in the six months through June. Meanwhile, the chaotic rollout of US tariffs wiped some of the shine off Treasuries. German bunds have outperformed them since April even as the government braces to issue more debt. Assets in emerging European markets like Poland and Hungary are also rallying sharply. Investors globally are slowing their purchases of US assets and shifting more money to Europe amid concern that President Donald Trump's programme of tariffs and tax cuts will impact earnings, stoke inflation and widen the budget deficit. Europe has become the big beneficiary as governments there boost spending while its central bank slashes interest rates. 'We're seeing extremely strong demand for European assets, particularly from the United States,' said Erik Koenig, who runs the EMEA equity sales desk at Bank of America Corp in London. 'While Europe has faced challenges in the past that may have held its markets back, there's now a growing confidence in its long-term potential.' For Koenig, the shifts in the United States have prompted Europe to take steps that have suddenly – and sustainably – improved its outlook. The region has had false dawns before, and the political instability and cumbersome regulations that deterred investors for years haven't fully gone away – valuations in Europe remain depressed relative to the United States. But something profound has happened, particularly after Germany removed its debt brake. Europe's biggest economy is now committed to borrow more and invest massively in defence and infrastructure after more than a decade of austerity, igniting a new sense of optimism. 'It's an exciting time to be in European markets,' Koenig said. At the European Central Bank, officials have been cutting rates aggressively, in contrast to the measured approach from the Federal Reserve. The rate differential will remain at or close to two percentage this year, based on swap market pricing. The wave of government spending, which will be funded through fresh debt sales, is expected to deliver a much-needed growth boost to the euro area. For Allianz Global Investors, one of Europe's largest asset managers, this has been a clear signal to slow its buying spree in US assets, and return to stocks and bonds at home. 'We don't feel comfortable in Treasuries anymore. We are going to the bund market,' said Greg Hirt, chief investment officer of multi-asset strategies at the firm. 'There will be more issuance in bunds because of German fiscal policy, but that is good because it makes it a more liquid market.' At the same time, the euro stands to benefit from the economic growth boost after underperforming for the past decade. The currency was headed for its longest stretch of monthly gains in eight years, and JPMorgan Chase & Co is among firms that see it reaching US$1.20 this year, up from US$1.04 at the end of 2024. Mark Nash at Jupiter Asset Management is even more bullish on regional growth. 'It wouldn't surprise me if we hit US$1.30 within around six to eight months,' he said, adding that he sees the common currency surging to US$1.40 next year, a near 20% jump from current levels. Meanwhile, low rates and stimulus measures will support corporate earnings, with both the United States and Europe estimated to provide 10% to 11% profit growth next year. European stocks trade at a 35% discount to their US peers, making for attractive valuations. — Bloomberg
