
‘Heard a big bang': Hydro lines down across road in Kitchener causes significant outage, road closure

Over a thousand Kitchener residents were without power following an alleged hydro line fire, July 8, 2025 (Sidra Jafri/CTV News).
A part of a road in Kitchener is closed after hydro lines came down Tuesday morning.
In a social media post at 7:07 a.m., the Waterloo Regional Police Service said Thaler Avenue was closed between Fairway Road North and Kinzie Avenue.
At around 8 a.m., a fire truck, Enova trucks and multiple police cruisers could be seen on Thaler Avenue. A spot of pavement was burnt with rising smoke.
Kay Esplane, a resident in the area, began to film after she heard a loud noise.
'I just hear a loud bang around 6:30 a.m. and I was thinking it was my power surging,' said Esplane. '...We looked outside and we just saw the fire starting and [we thought] 'oh it's the street post now.'
Esplane's video showed fire and sparks had ignited multiple spots on a fallen hydro line.
Kitchener Fire crews attended and extinguished the fire by around 8 a.m.

According to Enova's outage map, 1,646 customers had experienced an outage in the area around 7:27 a.m.
In an email to CTV News, police confirmed Enova hydro crews were on scene, repairing the lines.
Hydro lines and service were expected to be restored by 10:30 a.m.
