Act of kindness saves the life of a kitten found covered in parasites in Wellington County

A four-week old kitten, now known as Small Fry, was photographed at the Guelph Humane Society in Guelph, Ont. on July 18, 2025. (Sidra Jafri/CTV News) A small kitten found on the side of the road had a big fight in front of him after he was found at the side of the road in Wellington County during a heatwave. Sue Gabriele was driving along Wellington Road 86 on Saturday when she unexpectedly spotted something orange in the gravel. 'I honestly thought he was dead,' Gabriele said. 'I pulled over and then did a U-turn and started heading back towards the kitten. Another gentleman was in front of me doing the same thing.' When she saw the state of the four-week-old kitten, she knew something had to be done. 'I picked [the kitten] up and [the man and I] looked at each other like, 'we can't keep driving.'' (Sidra Jafri/CTV News) Gabriele said she took the kitten straight to the Guelph Humane Society. They told her his chances weren't looking good because he was covered in fly larvae and maggots. 'I just got in my car and cried,' Gabriele recalled. 'They gave me a reference number to call. I called on Monday and they said he was okay. He was eating, but still very sick.' Melissa Stolz with the Guelph Humane Society said the cat, now known affectionately as Small Fry, went through quite an ordeal. 'When he came in he was immediately treated with some [specialized] medication to get rid of those parasites right away,' Stolz explained. 'That took care of killing the flies, the fleas and the lice. He was bathed and he was thoroughly combed.' (Sidra Jafri/CTV News) She described Small Fry's condition as 'heart-breaking.' The Humane Society said he was weak from dehydration, unable to move and struggling to survive. 'I think we are very grateful that he was found, because if he wasn't found, he wouldn't have lasted for much longer,' Stolz said. On Wednesday, the Humane Society posted a video of Small Fry in very different spirits. He was filmed rolling around, pouncing and playing with toys. He won't be ready for adoption for some time and still has at least a few more weeks of treatment ahead of him. A donation page has been set up to help cover some of the costs of his medical needs. 'Now that he's going to make it, I'm over the moon. I'm so happy,' Gabriele said. 'I hope to follow him on Instagram one day and just see him get adopted.'

(Sidra Jafri/CTV News) Ottawa Street Ottawa Street has already closed between Westmount Road and Pinedale Drive for another improvement project. Construction began in April and is set to wrap in November. The city said the work will include: Reconstructed the intersection to be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly including shortening the distance of crossings, added pedestrian islands and raised the crosswalk on the right-turn lane going into Sunrise Plaza. Added multi-use paths on Ottawa Street Upgraded underground infrastructure including new electrical, water main and storm sewers Reconfigured the right-turn lane from Fischer-Hallman to Ottawa so all drivers now yield to oncoming traffic and then merge One nearby business said it's already feeling the impact of the construction. Mel's Diner typically fills 40 tables on a Wednesday morning – but not this week. 'We understand it is a lot of traffic, it's a lot of detours,' said server Danielle Linton. 'It's harder even coming into work. It takes even longer, so we understand, but it has affected us quite a bit… for example, I started at 9 a.m. and I've only had four tables, so it's definitely slowed down.' The restaurant, located at Ottawa and Westmount, is still accessible to traffic. More details on the project can be found on the city's website.

Kitchener road closure will affect drivers for months

A road closure sign was photographed in Kitchener, Ont. near Ottawa Street on July 7, 2025. (Sidra Jafri/CTV News) Drivers are being warned to prepare for a significant road closure in Kitchener. Ottawa Street South will be off limits to all traffic, between Westmount Road and Pinedale Drive, starting on Monday. A detour has been set up along Fischer-Hallman Road and Westmount Road, however Westmount Road has also been reduced to one lane in either direction. Ottawa Street project The first phase of the Ottawa Street construction project began in 2024. It included the addition of multi-use paths and upgraded underground infrastructure between Fischer-Hallman Road and Pinedale Drive. The Region of Waterloo, the municipality responsible for the project, also wanted to reconfigure the right-turn lane from Fischer-Hallman to Ottawa so all drivers must now yield to oncoming traffic before merging. The closure of Ottawa Street South marks the second phase of the project. The work will include the construction a new roundabout at the Ottawa Street and Westmount Road intersection, continuing the new multi-use path, replacing the Shoemaker Creek culvert and watermain, and upgrading storm sewers. This phase should be completed by November 2025, meaning asphalt paving could happen sometime in 2026. The Region of Waterloo has committed $10.2 million dollars to the project. Bus detours Transit users will also be impacted by the latest closure. For the next few months, Grand River Transit will take detours around the area. The following bus stops will also be closed: Route 3 to Sunrise Centre Station: Ottawa / Path to Chandler Ottawa / Westmount Ottawa / Howe Ottawa / Williamsburg Ottawa / Fischer-Hallman Ottawa / International Route 3 to Frederick Station: Ottawa / Williamsburg Ottawa / Pinedale Ottawa / Westmount Route 205 to Sunrise Centre Station: Strasburg / Ottawa Ottawa / Westmount Westmount past Ottawa Block Line / Westmount Ottawa / Fischer-Hallman Route 205 to Ottawa and Lackner:
