New watchdog must investigate risk of dementia in football, MPs say
There are calls for the new watchdog to be given powers to investigate the issue or risk current players suffering the same fate as England stars of the past like Sir Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles.
Charlton's dementia diagnosis was confirmed in November 2020, weeks after the death of his 1966 World Cup-winning team-mate Stiles.
A postmortem on Stiles' brain found he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with repetitive head impacts.
Stiles' son John is the leader of the Football Families for Justice (FFJ) group which is bringing its campaign to Westminster on Tuesday 29 April.
FFJ has the support of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and is seeking an amendment to the Football Governance Bill to give the regulator powers to impose a statutory duty on the football authorities to develop a comprehensive dementia strategy.
Chris Evans, the Labour MP for Caerphilly, said during the second reading of the Bill in Parliament on Monday, 28 April: 'Footballers suffer neurodegenerative diseases at four to five times the national average.
"It is something that needs to be investigated.
'When the football regulator comes about, I hope research into medical conditions is part of its remit, to support people who have given so many others so much pleasure over the years.
'I hope that there is something we can do to ensure that the tragedies suffered by Nobby Stiles, Jackie Charlton and Bobby Charlton – legends whose names trip off the tongue – are not suffered by their successors, such as Harry Kane.'
Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, said he felt the Premier League and the Football Association 'do not do justice' by the families of affected former players.
'Those organisations are meant to help families with the care costs of such former professionals, but they do not do so,' he said.
'Will the Secretary of State meet Football Families for Justice so that we can put something in the Bill that will force the wealthy people in football to support those who suffer?'
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy responded to say she planned to meet with the families 'shortly'.
The campaign has the backing of another 1966 World Cup winner, Sir Geoff Hurst, along with former England captain David Beckham.
The FA and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) co-funded arguably the single most important piece of research which informs the debate on dementia in football, the 2019 FIELD Study, which found footballers were three and a half times more likely to die of neurodegenerative disease than age-matched members of the general population.
The PFA and the Premier League set up the Football Brain Health Fund in September 2023, worth an initial £1million, a figure FFJ leader Stiles has described as a 'pittance'.

Ruben Amorim prefers Ollie Watkins - but Man Utd make Benjamin Sesko No.1 target
Ruben Amorim would rather sign Ollie Watkins than Benjamin Sesko despite Manchester United making the latter their No.1 transfer target. The Red Devils are keen to recruit a new striker ahead of the new Premier League season and have been strongly linked to both players this summer. United's hierarchy have now decided to prioritise a move for RB Leipzig forward Sesko and are hoping to strike a deal for £60-70m plus add-ons. It's somewhat of a surprising call, given United head coach Amorim would actually prefer to sign Watkins from Aston Villa, talkSPORT have reported. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Amorim has made it clear he'd like to bring in players with Premier League experience, such as new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Watkins certainly fits that description, having proven himself as a Premier League goalscorer, unlike Sesko, who has never played in England before. But United have decided to focus on Sesko instead because they feel Watkins' price tag is too high for a player who turns 30 in December. Villa are believed to want £60m for Watkins – but United are only willing to pay up to £45m for the 29-year-old Englishman. It was quite a tough season for Leipzig last term, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They were struggling, which reflected on Sesko's output, but he's still been one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Arsenal's Kai Havertz, he's not at that level. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner. Rune Gjerulff, German football expert and editor of Bulinews Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has been left 'worried' over United's decision to prioritise Sesko over Watkins. Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, he said: 'If you get Watkins, you've got guaranteed 15-20 goals really and then you've got that with Cunha and you've got that with Mbeumo. 'Not completely guaranteed, but you've got double figures all the way up front. 'Bear in mind, we were 16th in terms of goals scored last season and these lot are getting you minimum 40 goals between them.' Sesko has played a total of 87 games for RB Leipzig across all competitions, scoring 39 goals and providing eight assists. Last season, the 22-year-old registered 21 goals and six assists across 45 games. Ferdinand is not writing off Sesko coming in and succeeding at United but believes the move would be riskier than a deal for Villa striker Watkins. Pointing to Rasmus Hojlund's struggles since arriving in English football, Ferdinand added: 'The only difference is that Rasmus came in and had inexperience around him in terms of [Alejandro] Garnacho one side and Amad [Diallo] the other, for instance, most of the time. 'If Sesko comes in, he's got two players that have played Premier League, scored goals in the Premier League and backed up by Bruno [Fernandes] so I think it's a different dynamic that he comes into. 'But the uncertainty worries me a little bit. Can he adapt to this league?' Arsenal star issues brutal response to Tottenham's Richarlison after social media dig
Tottenham Hotspur beat Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong, prompting a social media back-and-forth between Spurs star Richarlison and one of his Gunners rivals Arsenal star Gabriel reminded compatriot Richarlison of the games that really matter after the rivals faced off in pre-season. Spurs and Brazil forward Richarlison was on the winning side in Hong Kong and shared a photo of his man of the match award on social media. He also tagged Gabriel in the post in an apparent dig at the Gunners centre-back. The defender wasn't going to let that slide, though, responding with photos of the three man of the match awards he won in Premier League games against Spurs. The first of the three awards came in the 2023-24 season, when Arsenal won 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Gabriel was also man of the match in both of last season's games - a 1-0 away win and 2-1 home victory for the Gunners. Arsenal had won both of their first two pre-season fixtures, against AC Milan and Newcastle United. They came up short against their North London rivals, though, with Pape Matar Sarr scoring the only goal of the game. Gabriel wasn't involved in the match in Hong Kong as he continues to work his way back from injury. However, there were debuts for the Gunners' new striker Viktor Gyokeres and centre-back Cristhian Mosquera. "A big surprise, because whenever we have them [new signings] to participate in training sessions, in games, the attitude and especially the quality that they have has been incredible, so very pleased," Arsenal boss MIkel Arteta said after the game. "As I said, a lot of great things to take from this tour. "The incredible camaraderie that we had between the players and the staff, and how I think everyone values where we are. It's been a long two weeks, with a lot happening, a lot of things that you have to adapt in your preparation. But the attitude of everybody to make it happen, especially to everybody who has been involved in preparing all of the tour for us. A big thank you because they've done an amazing job." Spurs boss Thomas Frank was delighted with the result, even if it was a friendly. 'A 1-0 score against Arsenal is an absolutely beautiful score!' he told club media. 'Yes, it is a friendly, but it's also a very competitive match. I said before the game that games against Arsenal are never 'friendly'. It means everything. I have to give respect to both teams for their competitiveness in the game. It was very competitive." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
