Malaysia, Russia To Deepen Economic Ties

MOSCOW, June 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Russia will deepen economic cooperation, particularly in high-potential sectors such as the halal industry, agriculture and food security, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said.
Fadillah said bilateral trade between the two countries remained modest in 2024, despite Russia's large economy.
Russia ranked as Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations this year, with total trade reaching RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion).
Malaysia's key exports to Russia include electrical and electronic products, machinery, equipment and parts, as well as processed food.
'I invited Russian companies to invest in Malaysia and take advantage of the government's incentives in strategic sectors such as aerospace, agrotechnology, energy, ICT (information and communications technology), the digital economy, Islamic finance and the halal industry,' the Deputy Prime Minister said.
He was speaking at a press conference at the end of his four-day working visit to Russia late last night.
Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, called for cooperation in agriculture and food security, and proposed joint research and development in fertiliser and pesticide technologies, agro-engineering and food technology.
'I discussed collaboration in higher education and conveyed appreciation to the Russian government for its scholarships to Malaysian students.

Separately, Mohamad said the coconut industry holds strong potential to become a key contributor to the national economy, similar to pineapples. He noted rising demand for both mature coconuts, which are being actively cultivated in Sabah, and young coconuts, especially from China. 'The crop is expected to generate impressive export value, just like pineapples, which have surpassed RM1 billion in sales,' he said. Mohamad had previously praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for driving national production and export growth in the sector.

Agriculture TVET Graduates' Marketability Rate At 81.23 Pct
SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- The marketability rate of Agriculture Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates under the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) rose to 81.23 per cent last year from 78.1 per cent in 2023. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the average has been on an upward trend for the past five years even though it remains under the national average, and that TVET is viewed as a catalyst as it nurtures young talent who are not only skilled in theories but excel in practical applications. 'In line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0, the agriculture sector requires a new approach to boost productivity, especially through robotic technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI), with minimum resources.

Car bombing kills 13 Pakistani soldiers near Afghan border, say sources
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (Reuters) -An explosive-laden car rammed into a Pakistani military convoy on Saturday in a town near the Afghan border, killing at least 13 soldiers, sources said. Four Pakistani intelligence officials and a senior local administrator told Reuters that the convoy was attacked in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan district. Around 10 other soldiers were wounded, some critically, and they were being airlifted to a military hospital, the sources said. "It was huge, a big bang," said the local administrator, adding that residents of the town could see a large amount of smoke billowing from the scene from a great distance. One resident said that the explosion rattled the windowpanes of nearby houses, and caused some roofs to collapse. No one has so far claimed responsibility. The Pakistani military did not respond to a Reuters request for a comment. The lawless district which sits next to Afghanistan has long served as a safe haven for different Islamist militant groups, who operate on both sides of the border. Islamabad says the militants run training camps in Afghanistan to launch attacks inside Pakistan, a charge Kabul denies, saying the militancy is Pakistan's domestic issue. Pakistani Taliban also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella group of several Islamist militant groups, has long been waging a war against Pakistan in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with its own Islamic system of governance. The Pakistani military, which has launched several offensives against the militants, has mostly been their prime target.
