New padi varieties MR CL3 and MR4 combat weedy rice in Malaysia
Developed through a 20-year collaboration between MARDI and BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, these varieties promise higher yields and better resistance to common diseases.
Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu highlighted the benefits of the new strains during the launch at the FELCRA Berhad Seed Centre.
'MR CL3 and MR CL4 mature in just 99 days and can produce over seven tonnes per hectare,' he said.
These varieties are also resistant to leaf and neck blast diseases, making them suitable for KPKM initiatives like the five padi planting seasons in two years and the SMART SBB programme.
The commercialisation of these padi varieties will follow the Clearfield Production System, which includes specialised herbicides and stewardship guidelines to manage weedy rice effectively.
'These varieties are bred to withstand imidazolinone herbicides, ensuring better control over invasive weeds,' Mohamad added.
Weedy rice, locally known as 'padi angin,' is a major agricultural challenge, often reducing crop yields significantly. The introduction of MR CL3 and MR CL4 aims to mitigate this issue while enhancing productivity for farmers.
The event also saw the inauguration of the new Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) Complex in Seberang Perak, marking another step in modernising Malaysia's agricultural sector. - Bernama

More R&D to produce local fruits year-round
KLANG: Thailand and Japan have been used as reference points in research and development (R&D) for seasonal fruits to achieve year-round production. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu ( pic ) said the effort, undertaken by the Agriculture Department and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi), is in line with the campaign to promote local fruits and vegetables. 'We are carrying out R&D to produce new seeds and so on. 'The Mardi durian, for example, was produced recently in Kuala Kangsar. 'Delicious (and) high quality,' he said when launching the National Campaign to Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables at the four-day Fama Fest 2025@ Selangor here yesterday. Mohamad said the ministry is very serious about boosting the popularity of local fruits among Malaysians. As part of the effort, he said the government decided that local fruits must be served at official functions as a show of support for local farmers. 'During my visit to Thailand as Defence Minister (May 2018 to February 2020), I was served cuisine made with local fruits and vegetables throughout my time there. 'The same goes for Japan – almost 100% local,' he said, Bernama reported. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the fest, which featured 50 local entrepreneurs and drew more than 40,000 visitors, recorded a sales value of over RM800,000. Since its launch in 2017, the Fama Fest has been a catalyst for the economic growth of agri-entrepreneurs, he said. Last year's event saw the participation of 949 entrepreneurs and attracted more than 492,000 visitors nationwide, generating RM8.8mil in sales. This year, the target is RM5.3mil in sales with 265,000 visitors and the involvement of 383 entrepreneurs across six locations.

Penang livestock revenue hits RM1.906 billion with poultry leading growth
KEPALA BATAS: Penang recorded a Livestock Revenue Value (NHT) of RM1.906 billion last year, marking an increase of RM41.54 million compared to the previous year. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that poultry and duck products, including meat and eggs, were the largest contributors, accounting for 91.75 per cent of the total NHT. 'The livestock industry remains a vital source of protein for the people of this state,' Chow said during his speech at the opening of the Penang Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen Day at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). Interim results from the Penang Agricultural Census 2023 showed that the livestock sector contributed 44 per cent of the state's total agricultural sales, valued at RM3.514 billion. Chow emphasised that the Livestock Enactment aims to modernise self-sustaining industries like poultry and pig farming, shifting them toward large-scale, technology-driven operations. The event, held from Friday until today, was also attended by State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol. Chow highlighted the adoption of closed-house farming to improve production quality and environmental sustainability while ensuring support for small-scale traditional livestock farming through the Livestock Industry Development Project. Efforts to control zoonotic diseases remain a priority to safeguard public health and industry sustainability. Chow added that Penang's agricultural strategy aligns with the National Agro-Food Policy (DAN 2.0) 2021-2025, focusing on food security. The state is also developing strategic agricultural parks like Ara Kuda and Mayfield, which utilise advanced farming technology. The federal government's Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) initiative further strengthens the rice industry through 12 key programmes aimed at boosting efficiency and resilience. – Bernama

Malaysia eyes RM1.5 bil in durian exports as China expands local production
MALAYSIA is projecting its durian exports to surpass RM1.5 bil in 2025, even as China, its biggest buyer, ramps up efforts to grow the fruit locally. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said demand from China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada has fueled a 256.3% surge in export value over five years, from RM321.2 mil in 2018 to RM1.14 bil in 2022. Speaking at the 2025 Durian Festival in Gua Musang, he said durian has proven to be a high-value agro-food commodity, creating opportunities along the supply chain, from farmers to exporters. The recently signed protocol with China for fresh durian exports is expected to boost growth further. 'This proves durian's great potential—not only delivering strong returns to the country but also generating widespread economic opportunities,' he said. However, China is actively developing its own durian industry. In Hainan Province, domestic production has begun to bear fruit, literally. Thanks to government subsidies, smart farming technology, and integrated agri-business models, China is harvesting its first commercial batches of durian, about 2,000 tonnes this year. Despite its late start, China is the world's largest durian importer, accounting for over 90% of Asia Pacific's durian imports. In 2024, its total import volume reached 1.56 mil tonnes. Industry observers note that while China's durians remain costlier than imported ones, they offer fresher flavor and shorter supply chains. As China eyes self-sufficiency, Malaysia remains optimistic that demand will outpace domestic supply, keeping the King of Fruits a lucrative export staple. —July 27, 2025 Main image: Wikipedia
