FreshDirect opens its first-ever retail location in New York today

Time Out23-05-2025
More often than not, finding a quality grocery store in NYC can be a hassle, which is why many New Yorkers turn to reliable grocery delivery or even takeout for their dinner plans. But today, one grocery giant is flipping the script: After 25 years online, FreshDirect is stunning shoppers with a brick-and-mortar debut in New York. Today, the brand's very first physical location, called FreshDirect on Main, opens for in-person purchases in the heart of Southampton 's East End Village.
Designed to mimic your favorite farmers market, the pop-up shop is stocked with curated collections of local products on wooden crates and pallets. Find farm-fresh produce, small-batch cheeses from nearby creameries, high-quality olive oils, and seasonal fruits and vegetables from regional farms like Wells Homestead Acres and Deer Run Farms.
A dedicated coffee counter will sling local legend Jack's Stir Brew Coffee alongside FreshDirect's baked breakfast items (think buttery, flaky croissants) and more specialty prepared foods.
For today's grand opening, guests will receive a complimentary mini loaf of banana bread, while the first 100 customers will each receive a $100 gift card to use toward their next online purchase. Visitors of the new shop will also receive limited-edition Hamptons-inspired FreshDirect totes for all their future market runs.
Later this season, expect in-store experiences such as ice cream socials, wine and cheese tastings, and even pizza-making classes. In June, FreshDirect will takeover an East Hampton house for a 'Tiny Tastemakers' event series for kids, giving families a chance to meet the local farmers and artisans who grow and make the food they love.

WOOHOO: A new AI chef-helmed restaurant is opening soon

A robot in the kitchen isn't new. But a robot with opinions, mood-based flavour pairings and a creative partnership with one of Dubai's top chefs? That's a first. Say hello to WOOHOO, a soon-to-open Asian-inspired restaurant that will be located at Kempinski The Boulevard hotel and will be helmed by an AI chef named Aiman The artificial intelligence kitchen assistant is apparently no quiet back-of-house bot. He's designed to collaborate alongside human chefs, offering creative input on flavour profiles, ingredient pairings and culinary techniques. In fact, he'll be working directly with chef Reif Othman on a menu that fuses international flair with Asian influences. Expect umami-rich sushi rolls, punchy ceviche and robata skewers that balance texture and temperature with science-like precision (or AI-like precision, if we're being specific). Credit: WOOHOO Dubai Credit: WOOHOO Dubai Credit: WOOHOO Dubai Unlike the usual behind-the-scenes AI systems running inventory or reservations, Chef Aiman will be front and centre, analysing produce, interpreting seasonality and riffing on recipes in real-time. The drinks list doesn't play it safe either. Expect molecular mixed drinks, algorithm-assisted pairings and rare beverages served with a sci-fi edge. Meanwhile, the space is all cyberpunk meets fine dining. The interiors blend futuristic textures with digital art installations and reactive LED displays. There's also a secret lounge, called Spock, which mimics a spaceship journey, complete with a killer sound system and live DJ sets. Set to open in September 2025 inside Kempinski The Boulevard Hotel in Downtown Dubai, WOOHOO is the latest project from Gastronaut Hospitality (the guys behind Trove and BohoX in Downtown Dubai), and it's bringing the world's first AI chef to the table. Stay tuned. Opening Sep 2025. Kempinski The Boulevard Hotel, Downtown Dubai, @ Want to make a reservation in the meantime? Is Driftwood bar in Glasgow city centre shut for good?

Driftwood, a Sauchiehall Street institution since the late 1990s, has long been a fixture of Glasgow's nightlife. However, loyal customers have been left reeling after learning that the popular pub has reportedly shut down for good. Adding to the uncertainty, all of Driftwood's social media accounts appear to have been deleted, leaving regulars searching for answers. When the Glasgow Times searched for the social media channels, we were met with a message which stated that the page cannot be found. (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) READ MORE: Prices for alcoholic drinks at TRNSMT 2025 have been revealed Known for its quirky concoctions and themed events, Driftwood earned a cult following for its Buckfast jelly bombs, Disney-inspired cocktails, and its infamous pie and bean pizzas. The venue was equally known for its buzzing atmosphere and loyal clientele. Social media has since been flooded with tributes and expressions of sadness from fans and former staff. Donald McLeod, owner of Glasgow venues Cathouse and The Garage, shared his disappointment online: 'This is desperately sad news. "I'm gutted for my friend and owner Dario, Nicola, and their team, who have worked tirelessly for 28 years to make this corner of Sauchiehall Street an iconic Glasgow institution—only to see it torn away from them in the blink of an eye.' Cathouse's official social media added: 'They said only two things would survive a nuclear attack—cockroaches and Driftwood. "We are living in the decline of bars and venues, and it never gets any easier seeing places disappear. "Our hearts go out to the staff who have been made redundant and the customers who frequented Driftwood during its 28-year reign in Glasgow.' Former staff have also shared their memories. One wrote on Facebook: 'I'm gutted to hear about this. "I worked there when it was Los Borrachos, from October 1999 to February 2001—my first bar job. I was there for a year and a half. Lots of memories.' The Glasgow Bartenders Club questioned the reasons behind the closure, while videos mourning the pub's potential end have been circulating widely on TikTok. One emotional clip read: 'Wasn't going to drink tonight, but Driftwood in Glasgow is closed and might not reopen, and their accounts are gone. My heart is broken.' Another simply asked: 'What do I do now that Driftwood is closed forever?' There was no sign on the door to indicate a closure, but the bar wasn't open (Image: Newsquest) The Glasgow Times visited the premises of Driftwood, and it appears closed with no signs indicating if it has shut for good or when it will be opening once again. As of now, no official statement has been released by the bar's owners, but with its digital presence wiped and industry insiders mourning its loss, the future of Driftwood remains uncertain. The Glasgow Times has approached Driftwood for comment.
