Kathy Hochul's highway-robbery bragging puts Willie Sutton to shame

At least Willie Sutton was being humble when he declared, 'I rob banks because that's where the money is'; Gov. Kathy Hochul is now boasting about her version of the same insight. That is, the gov's congratulating herself for raking in big bucks from her 'congestion' tolls — hundreds of millions as the scheme hits the six-month mark, on track to hit $500 million by year's end. Hochul's PR blast over the weekend called this a 'huge success'; Willie could've claimed the same about most of his capers, smirking much as she does in the social-media-campaign part of her 'victory tour.' Advertisement Sorry: Forcing middle- and working-class New Yorkers to pay an exorbitant amount of their income just to get to work — to drive on roads their taxes already funded — is neither a genius nor a heroic one. And the bragging only adds insult to the injury. The tolls help 'businesses make deliveries and save costs,' claims Hochul's office. Advertisement Huh? Food distributors are looking at six-figure added costs, while the likes of FreshDirect are slipping in added fees for congestion-zone customers. Small restaurants are also reeling. This move remains a cruel money grab wrapped up in a green pseudo-justification, one the gov knows people hate — that's why she postponed it until after last November's elections. We guess she hopes voters will simply have forgotten, or grown resigned to the hit, by the time she faces them in November 2026. Beware: If she actually wins re-election this way, the plans are already drawn up to move toward doubling the tolls soon after.

FreshDirect ventures into physical retail

This story was originally published on Grocery Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Grocery Dive newsletter. FreshDirect has opened a temporary brick-and-mortar store in Southampton, New York, marking the e-grocer's first venture into the world of physical retail. The pop-up location in the resort town near the tip of Long Island opened its doors on Friday and will remain in operation until the end of December. Known as FreshDirect on Main, the store carries an assortment of local foods, including farm-fresh produce, small-batch cheeses, olive oil and seasonal items. It also features a coffee counter that offers croissants and prepared foods, according to FreshDirect. FreshDirect also plans to host activities such as ice cream socials and wine tastings in the store. In addition, the grocer said it intends to hold events including pizza-making classes next month in a house in nearby East Hampton, which, like Southampton, is part of the Hamptons, a group of seaside villages about 90 miles from New York City. FreshDirect, which currently provides next-day grocery delivery service to communities in the Hamptons, said it is looking into offering same-day service to the area by using the pop-up store to fulfill orders. Launched in 2002, FreshDirect is owned by Turkish rapid-delivery company Getir, which acquired the grocery delivery company from Ahold Delhaize in late 2023. Ahold Delhaize opted to sell FreshDirect just three years after buying a majority stake in it. FreshDirect's business is centered on its delivery service in the New York City region. The company, based in the New York borough of the Bronx, said earlier this month that it would resume service in parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware, reversing a decision from mid-2022 to reduce its service areas. FreshDirect opens its first-ever retail location in New York today

More often than not, finding a quality grocery store in NYC can be a hassle, which is why many New Yorkers turn to reliable grocery delivery or even takeout for their dinner plans. But today, one grocery giant is flipping the script: After 25 years online, FreshDirect is stunning shoppers with a brick-and-mortar debut in New York. Today, the brand's very first physical location, called FreshDirect on Main, opens for in-person purchases in the heart of Southampton 's East End Village. Designed to mimic your favorite farmers market, the pop-up shop is stocked with curated collections of local products on wooden crates and pallets. Find farm-fresh produce, small-batch cheeses from nearby creameries, high-quality olive oils, and seasonal fruits and vegetables from regional farms like Wells Homestead Acres and Deer Run Farms. A dedicated coffee counter will sling local legend Jack's Stir Brew Coffee alongside FreshDirect's baked breakfast items (think buttery, flaky croissants) and more specialty prepared foods. For today's grand opening, guests will receive a complimentary mini loaf of banana bread, while the first 100 customers will each receive a $100 gift card to use toward their next online purchase. Visitors of the new shop will also receive limited-edition Hamptons-inspired FreshDirect totes for all their future market runs. Later this season, expect in-store experiences such as ice cream socials, wine and cheese tastings, and even pizza-making classes. In June, FreshDirect will takeover an East Hampton house for a 'Tiny Tastemakers' event series for kids, giving families a chance to meet the local farmers and artisans who grow and make the food they love.
