'Shankland in top bracket of Hearts legends'
Lawrence Shankland has elevated himself to legendary status at Heart of Midlothian, according to his former head coach, Steven 29-year-old Scotland striker signed a new three-year contract at Tynecastle earlier this week to end months of speculation surrounding his was out of contract and had turned down earlier offers to stay in the Scottish by committing himself to Hearts, Naismith - a former Hearts player and head coach - believes Shankland is now up there with the likes of John Robertson and Craig Levein."Him signing this deal puts him right in the top bracket of Hearts legends," Naismith said on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "He's up with the rest of them and that's only going to get better as he scores more goals. "For the club and fans, it's as big as any signing that's going to come in."While many Hearts supporters had resigned themselves to a future without Shankland, Naismith says he was "calm" over the contract situation and says a drawn-out process was inevitable given the striker's goal-scoring two of the past three league seasons, he has scored more than 20 league goals, bagging 68 in total."When there's a player at that age performing at that level, they are going to take their time and see what's out there," Naismith added."I was very calm about it all. Shanks was going to have interest because his levels were so high, but I also did know how much he loves Hearts and how well he was liked."

Hibs new boy helped hammer Gray's men

New Hibs signing Josh Mulligan has revealed how playing in a one-sided thrashing of the Easter Road side last season left the Dundee star convinced that David Gray's men were a seriously good team just struggling to catch a lucky break. And he immediately wanted to be part of that group when Hibs came calling for him at the end of the campaign. Mulligan, who knocked back offers from the English Championship to commit himself to Hibs on a four-year contract after his deal at Dens wound down, played in the 4-1 home win over Gray's relegation strugglers back in November. The visitors actually took the lead on the day but had Jordan Obita sent off after just 12 minutes – and collapsed to a heavy defeat. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mulligan impressed despite final score Surprisingly, Mulligan – who also played in a 4-0 loss to Hibs in April, by which time the Edinburgh side were cruising towards a third place finish in the Scottish Premiership – singled out that loss when asked how the performances of Gray's men last season had influenced his thinking, saying: "Yeah, massive. We played them three times, but I only played in two of the games and even the game that we won, I felt they were a really strong side. 'They got the man sent off which kind of killed the game for them. But the way they played and the sort of chemistry that everyone had – I just thought: 'I want to be a part of that.' So I'm looking forward to the games ahead." League phase European football the target Equally at home as a right wingback or in central midfielder, Mulligan believes Hibs should be aiming to make the league phases of European football this season. And insists that a top six finish in the league should be a minimum. On a personal level, he's looking forward to being reunited with former Scotland Under-21 team-mate Kieron Bowie. And following his example by making the leap into Steve Clarke's senior national team squad? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "Definitely,' he said, pointing out: 'I think it's not just Kieron, there have been quite a few to have come from the 21 set-up. I'm definitely looking at that and wanting to be a part of that. "I was with Kieron with the under-21s, so I know Kieron well and get on well with him, so I knew him before coming. Yeah, he's a goal scorer. 'I mean, if he gets a chance, he'll take it. I set him up in one game actually; it was a good goal. He's a really good player." Looking forward to getting some early game time for Hibs, Mulligan obviously has one eye on the Europa League second qualifying round tie against Midtjylland, pointing out: 'This is my first time sort of involved in that and yeah, obviously I can't wait. I've played in the under-21 set-up and played against, you know, good players and big countries. I love challenging myself against that type of player, and I'm looking forward to it. "Yeah, there were a few offers on the table, but nothing really that I thought was going to be anything serious. Malky Mackay and Hibs came in really strong, and they were really keen. 'You want to go somewhere you're wanted, and this was definitely a place that I wanted to come. So it was good. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "Honestly, I don't have any preference where I play on the pitch. I feel quite comfortable in both positions. 'I don't feel out of place or lost when I'm in whichever position. Both are great for me, I think they both suit me well, and my attributes are good for those positions."

Rangers vs Club Brugge LIVE score and goal updates from Russell Martin's first game in charge at Ibrox
New owners, new manager, new players, same hope. It's been a summer of change at Rangers but the same old outcome won't be tolerated after too many years chasing Celtic's shadows. Russell Martin is the latest man tasked with at least giving Brendan Rodgers something to think about when it comes to the Scottish Premiership title this season. Oh, and there's the small matter of Champions League qualifiers later on this month. That's the focus for now and today's friendly against Club Brugge should provide a stern enough test to see how ready Rangers are for Panathinaikos. New signings Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez should get a run out, and fans will hope Thelo Aasgaard is in the squad despite only signing on Saturday. Rangers squad were 'weak' Billy Dodds has fired a brutal parting shot at Rangers by claiming that 70 per cent of the squad last season were 'weak' and didn't deserve to be at the club. The Ibrox goal hero - who netted 34 times in 84 matches for the Light Blues between 1999 and 2003 - returned to Govan back in February as part of interim boss and former teammate Barry Ferguson's backroom team in the wake of Philippe Clement's sacking. Despite leading Gers to the quarter-finals of the Europa League and a 3-2 Old Firm victory against Celtic on away soil, Ferguson's tenure was overshadowed by disappointing league defeats to Motherwell and Hibernian as well as a succession of dropped points in draws with Aberdeen and St Mirren that ultimately saw Brendan Rodgers' side on the other side of the city run away with the Premiership title with a 17-point margin. Along with fellow backroom staff members Allan McGregor and Neil McCann, Dodds was then removed from his role when it was confirmed that Ferguson would not be taking the team forward into next season. 10:52Hugh Keevins Rangers doors yet to be blown off The only person I know who has been in the same room at Ibrox as Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe summed up the men in just three words. Humility with confidence. Testimonials don't need to be lengthy and flowery. They just need to be an accurate assessment of the people you have met, bearing in mind they then have to live up to your assessment after that first positive impression. And the first thing the representatives of Rangers' new owners 49ers Enterprises have to do is win the battle between perception and reality. The perception was that Rangers' takeover and the injection of £20million in fresh investment via a share issue would see dramatic movement on the transfer front. Mobile telephones were poised at Glasgow Airport for the arrival of European football's A-listers at the baggage carousel. Loanees. Undisclosed fees for the permanent buys. And a distinct absence of what might be called marquee signings have made up the nature of what has taken place so far. 10:51Ross Pilcher Dream window for Rangers? The Russell Martin era is set to officially get underway as Rangers face Club Brugge in pre-season. But attention is already on the serious stuff for the new boss and the US owners of the club with the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos just under three weeks away. New sporting director Kevin Thelwell hasn't been slow to add to the Rangers' ranks this summer with the club ticking down to the first competitive game of the campaign. Thelo Asgaard is the latest player to join the American revolution at Ibrox - with Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell, Max Aarons and Lyall Cameron already in the door. But more work must be done - with several key positions on the shopping list this summer. takes a look at some of the deals that could make it a dream window for the Scottish Premiership giants:
