Morocco Arrests Two Israelis Over Fraud, Kidnapping Allegations

Morocco World6 days ago
Marrakech – Moroccan authorities have detained two Israeli nationals at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca in separate incidents last week, both arrested upon arrival based on international arrest warrants issued through Interpol.
A Forex fraudster
According to the Hebrew news outlet Mako, the first case involves an Israeli businessman known to Israel's Lahav 433 police unit, who was arrested after landing in Casablanca from Dubai where he had been vacationing with his two young children.
The arrest stemmed from an international warrant issued by German authorities, who suspect him of orchestrating a massive Forex fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded thousands of German citizens out of tens of millions of euros.
'He was shocked when presented with the international warrant issued against him by Interpol. They had been working on his case for several years and waited for the moment he left Dubai to close in on him,' said a Moroccan source involved in the arrest.
'The Germans brought a prepared extradition case and surrounded him from all directions. I estimate he will be extradited within days,' they added.
The businessman is suspected of renting large office spaces in central Israel and several Eastern European cities about three years ago. There, he allegedly employed dozens of workers who posed as investment company owners and scammed German citizens who wanted to invest their money, only to discover one day that they had lost everything.
Israeli police had previously investigated the businessman, with Lahav 433 investigators repeatedly requesting court orders to seize his assets worth tens of millions of shekels, including a villa in Herzliya Pituach valued at approximately 25 million shekels ($6.7 million).
While Israeli investigators couldn't gather sufficient evidence for an indictment, German law enforcement authorities reportedly obtained evidence implicating him in one of the largest Forex fraud schemes in Germany.
'When the Germans issue an international arrest warrant, it happens only after they have solid evidence. They won't make fools of themselves,' said a police officer quoted in the report.
'Quite a few Israelis have been involved in Forex fraud in Germany, and most were extradited, sentenced to lengthy prison terms, and ordered to pay compensation to victims. I believe he will spend many years in prison and pay substantial damages,' they continued.
The businessman is currently being held in a detention facility in Rabat, Morocco's capital, where he will fight his extradition to Germany. Moroccan law enforcement authorities reportedly plan to contact Israeli police in the coming days to obtain additional materials and documents to substantiate the charges against him.
A vacationer caught red-handed
In the second case, a resident of a town in Israel's Sharon region was arrested at Casablanca airport after arriving for vacation. The Israeli-French dual citizen was detained based on an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol following a complaint filed in France.
The suspect is allegedly involved in the extortion and kidnapping of a relative that supposedly occurred in Israel. The victim, who recently moved to France, filed a complaint with French authorities claiming he was kidnapped and extorted in Israel and forced to pay €200,000.
Following the complaint, French police opened an investigation and contacted Interpol, which issued an international arrest warrant against the suspect. Unaware that he was wanted, the man was arrested immediately upon landing in Casablanca and transferred to a detention facility in Rabat that holds foreign citizens pending extradition or deportation.
The Israeli citizen has denied the allegations, but French authorities have built a case against him that includes the victim's complaint and additional testimony. The Rabat court is expected to consider the extradition request to France in the coming days.
'He came for a vacation in Morocco and was surprised when they handcuffed him like a criminal. He didn't understand what they wanted from him,' said a source familiar with the case details.

Over 80 Irregular Immigrants Swim to Ceuta in Summer's Largest Irregular Migration Wave

Rabat — More than 80 people swam to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Saturday in the largest irregular immigration wave of the summer. The group included at least 50 Moroccan and Palestinian minors who braved dangerous sea conditions marked by strong swells and thick coastal fog. Spanish media outlet El Faro de Ceuta reported that rescue operations stretched from Friday afternoon through Saturday night. Spanish maritime units and divers from the Civil Guard's Special Underwater Activities Group (GEAS) worked intensively to save lives in the treacherous waters. The news outlet indicated that official reports confirm that rescuers saved 54 minors and around 30 adults. Most swimmers are reportedly Moroccan, with several Palestinians among them. Children scatter through city streets Despite increased security measures, several minors managed to slip away into different neighborhoods of Ceuta. This suggests the actual number of arrivals may exceed official figures released by authorities. Local authorities immediately transferred the rescued children to temporary reception centers. They also called on the central government to provide emergency assistance to handle the influx. August brings annual migration surge August typically sees a spike in migration attempts to the Ceuta enclave each year, with structural and situational factors driving this pattern, including poverty and unemployment in the region. This time, migrants took advantage of the dense fog that affects Morocco's northern coasts during this period, reducing the effectiveness of maritime radars and making irregular crossings easier to attempt undetected. Morocco's efforts to counter irregular immigration In response to the pressuring irregular immigration challenges across its borders, Morocco succeeded in preventing a total of 78,685 attempts in 2024. The North African country has shown firm response to the growing number of irregular immigration and related practices. Moroccan authorities dismantled 332 human trafficking networks during the same year, defying these groups' collaborative criminal operations. Most intercepted migrants came from West Africa, accounting for 58% of the total, while migrants from the Maghreb represented 12%, and 9% came from East and Central African countries. Morocco Prison Authority Denies False Death Claims in Viral Video

Rabat — Morocco's prison authority has denied false claims about a detained police officer's death that spread through a video posted online by someone living abroad. The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) issued a statement Saturday rejecting allegations that a police officer died at Ain Sebaa local prison. The prisoner mentioned in the video remains alive and currently serves his sentence at Arjat 2 local prison, not Ain Sebaa prison as the video claimed, DGAPR's statement indicated. Prison officials said the inmate faces charges for complicity in insulting public officials during their duties, insulting a legally governed institution, and helping spread fake statements and misleading information through computer systems for defamation purposes. The DGAPR clarified that he serves an 18-month prison sentence following a preliminary court decision, not the five-year term the video's creator falsely reported. The prison authority also accused the person who made the video of spreading fake news as part of a systematic campaign targeting Moroccan national institutions and agencies, in this case prison authorities. Officials described this as part of a broader plan designed to damage Morocco's image and defame its symbols while serving hostile agendas, especially with the organization of two prestigious football tournaments, the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, approaching. The statement raises ongoing concerns about misinformation campaigns targeting Moroccan institutions through social media platforms, particularly by individuals operating from outside the country's borders. In July 2024, a report indicated that the North African country was heavily subjected to fake news campaigns in June of the same year. The Moroccan government has been intensifying efforts to combat misinformation campaigns. In 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Communication met with TikTok's MENA director in a joint-pledge to take serious action on the matter and strengthen cooperation. PJD Condemns Israeli Interception of Handala, Moroccan Journalist Detention

Rabat — The Justice and Development Party (PJD) issued a statement today, condemning the Israeli Occupation Forces' (IOF) illegal interception of the humanitarian ship Handala and the detention of its passengers, including Moroccan journalist Mohamed El Bakkali. In El Bakkali's pre-recorded message before the interception of the Handala ship, he called on the Moroccan government and human rights organizations to secure their release. 'If you are seeing this video, the Handala ship has been intercepted by Israeli Forces… and most likely, we have been abducted and are being illegally detained,' the Al Jazeera journalist said. PJD condemned the interception of the ship and the arrest of the Moroccan journalist along with its peaceful activists, calling on Moroccan autZionisthorities to take immediate action to secure El Bakkali's release. 'What draws attention and condemnation is that the piracy of this humanitarian and peaceful ship was carried out by the sea pirates in international waters, in clear violation of all relevant international laws,' PJD said. PJD also condemned the total silence over similar incidents by the IOF without the international community's intervention. The party asserts that this encourages Israel to 'continue its actions and brutality without regard for laws, charters, or international institutions, threatening and undermining international peace and security.' The IOF intercepted the Handala ship on Saturday, with the Israeli Foreign Ministry claiming that the ship is part of 'unauthorized attempts to break the blockade.' They also reported they all passengers are safe; however, this has not been verified. Israel also claimed that similar acts 'undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts.' The claims come amid a starvation campaign Israel has launched against Palestinians in Gaza for months. The starvation death toll has reached at least 133 to date, including over 80 children. Activists and rights groups are warning that the death toll is yet to rise amid a lack and absence of humanitarian aid due to the IOF's merciless approach, contributing to its armed genocidal war and mass killings of Palestinians.
