Superman (2025) – Review

Geek Culture2 days ago
If Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013) was deemed to contain dark themes, lacked humour, had excessive destruction and filled with questionable character choices, then James Gunn's Superman is the direct opposite of that, and it's not necessarily a good thing. In its place is a message of hope and faith in mankind, a belief in righteousness, riddled with jokes and plenty of allusions to real world elements (a crazed billionaire against an illegal alien, and supportive of a war while backing a diabolical political tyrant), though this time, the questionable character choices stem from Gunn, who's using this movie to herald a new DC Studios cinematic universe.
Eschewing an origin movie, Gunn's script dives right in as Superman (David Corenswet) has been active in Metropolis for the last three years and is learning to become the hero that audiences know he is destined to become. But our fighter for truth and justice is also grappling with his identity as a powerful being sent by his birth parents to Earth to save mankind, and realising that doing the right thing can earn him the ire of the US government, who is looking for any reason to discredit the last son of Krypton.
Luckily, he's not alone in wanting to save the world as there are other metahumans, including Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), even as arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) has his own team of metas, including The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría) and the mysterious hooded Ultraman on his side.
In a slightly overcomplicated plot about warring neighbouring nations, attempts to beat, discredit, defeat and destroy Superman, as well as finding the good in people to help others, Gunn spins a rather complex tale that involves a pocket universe, a pointless kaiju monster and a screaming and almost hysterical Luthor going on about how his ego is an asset, and it's easy to wonder if Gunn, who balanced as many plot points in his The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy over at Marvel Studios, has bitten more than he can chew.
It seems that without a Kevin Feige equivalent to rein him in, because at Warner, Gunn, as co-CEO of DC Studios, is the Kevin Feige equivalent, Gunn is able to go big on some really wild ideas with no one to tell him otherwise, and what we get is a Marvel version of a DC movie, where the stakes don't seem real but rather shallow. Audiences will also have to deal with a James Gunn trope of adding more obscure music to make an already weak script seem more powerful.
Do we need to hear Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), newly dating for three months, bicker about some obscure punk rock band to make their characters seem more attractive or appealing? Do we care that as Mister Terrific is fighting mercenaries and protecting Lois in a shield dome, while some track from Gunn's extensive music library is playing loudly to distract audiences from the bad special effects?
The use of music might work in Guardians because time has been spent building a soundtrack of bands and songs into each of those movies, but since Gunn opted to jump right in, audiences might not appreciate it, as they also won't understand why Luthor hates Superman, and why and how Lois Lane discovered that her colleague and workplace competitor Clark Kent is Superman. While Gunn can write strong female leads, as shown with Nebula and Gamora in Guardians , and it's evident in the way Lois is shown, the same cannot be said about the other women in his over-bloated cast of characters that includes the underused Hawkgirl.
Meanwhile, there are the usual co-workers at the Daily Planet that serve no purpose, including having Wendell Pierce play Perry White, the team's editor-in-chief. Skyler Gisondo gets in more scenes as Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen, but halfway through the film, it's as if some of the actors are cosplaying their comic book characters just for laughs.
But the true injustice is done to Jonathan (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Martha Kent (Neva Howell), Clark's foster parents who raised him as their own. We've seen various incarnations across previous Superman films and television shows, but this is the first time that they are depicted as uninspiring simpletons from Hicksville – yes, they clearly love their son, but why write them as being so uneducated?
And don't get us started on the rather convenient subplot that Olsen is so filled with charisma, he has some effect on Lex's girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio). The many characters and various plot points hardly ever gel together in one cohesive block. And as much as Hoult is always charming on screen, his Lex is nothing more than a screaming, petulant child with money to throw at the problem. And isn't it a cop out that three of the four live-action theatrical Luthors have been nothing more than evil land-grabbing barons?
The one good element in the film is the chemistry between Corenswet and Brosnahan, which in turn translates into great interactions between Lois and Clark, and it's slightly disappointing that they only have a handful of interactions. Of all the live-action theatrical pairings, these two are clearly the best that Hollywood has to offer.
The other element that kind of works in the film's favour is the use of John Williams' classic Superman theme in this film. Like in the James Bond or The Pink Panther franchise, the use of a consistent theme music can help with recognition, and it's certainly fitting that the music has been adapted here.
Otherwise, all we have is a Superman in a rather oversized costume who gets his face disfigured on multiple occasions in this one film. And yes, we can understand that Krypto is cute to many people, but if a dog is one of the best things about a Superman movie, maybe audiences are barking up the wrong tree.
Summary
James Gunn delivers another superhero film the only way he can, with some strong characterisation and uneven scripting. But with too many jokes, plot points and characters inserted into a film, Superman offers an uneven beginning for things to come. Story - 6.5/10
Direction - 7/10

‘Red Sonja' Trailer Hits The Mark With Blood Soaked Reboot

The debut trailer for Red Sonja has hit the web, bringing Marvel Comics and Dynamite Entertainment's renowned heroine dressed in her signature chainmail bikini to life. Played by Matilda Lutz ( Revenge, Rings ), the movie looks to be a sentimental callback to the cinematic action style that populated the period of the early to mid-aughts. The two-minute footage introduces the iconic sword-wielding heroine as she responds to a mysterious, disembodied voice warning that 'the Earth is bleeding'. Seeking the power to confront those responsible, presumably for revenge, Sonja embarks on a journey that quickly escalates into high-stakes conflict. The trailer goes on to showcase a series of glimpses into a world of decadence and oppression, cutting between the imposing elites and our titular heroine's acts of defiance, liberating prisoners and executing swift combat manoeuvres. Her mission takes a turn when she's captured and cast into a brutal gladiatorial arena. From there, the tone shifts into a full-scale rebellion as Sonja leads a resistance against the ruling class across both arena and battlefield. Though the trailer already seems to depict all of the narrative beats in a blow-by-blow fashion, fans can certainly still look forward to what promises to be a good nostalgic time watching the fantasy film helmed by action director M.J. Bassett ( Solomon Kane ). The original movie starring Brigette Nielsen ( Rocky IV ) was released in 1985, with Arnold Schwarzenegger ( Terminator ), Sandahl Bergman ( Conan the Barbarian ), Paul Smith ( Midnight Express ), and Ronald Lacey ( Raiders of the Lost Ark ) in supporting roles. Matilda Lutz in Red Sonja (2025) Bassett confessed her enthusiasm for the character and the forthcoming film, stating in a press release: 'I've wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager—she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision.' Alongside Lutz, who replaced Hannah John-Kamen as the titular warrior, the Red Sonja reboot also features Martyn Ford ( Fast & Furious 9 ), Robert Sheehan ( The Umbrella Academy ), Wallis Day ( Batwoman ), Michael Bisping ( Den of Thieves ), Philip Winchester ( Strike Back ), Trevor Eve ( Waking the Dead ), Luca Pasqualino ( The Musketeers ), and Rhona Mitra ( Underworld: Rise of the Lycans ). Red Sonja is scheduled for a theatrical release on 15 August 2025, with a digital release on 29 August 2025. DC Studios Gunn-ing For Potential Mr Terrific Spin-Off And New 'Justice League' Movie

Before the reins were handed over to James Gunn and Peter Safran, now co-heads of DC Studios and who are spearheading the rebooted DC Universe (DCU), things hardly looked up for Warner Bros. Discovery and its DC Comics banner. Even the most popular superheroes couldn't keep up with Marvel Studios' whirlwind of success (during their peak, at least), but the slump may soon be over. An in-depth report by Wall Street Journal has detailed behind-the-scenes happenings between then and now, including past struggles and potential plans for the future. As Gunn's Superman takes flight on the silver screen, the hope is to reignite interest in DC projects, with Warner executives eyeing an opening global gross of over US$500 million. It's a high-stakes game, and the filmmaker isn't afraid to take up the challenge — or so it seems. According to the outlet, a source revealed that Gunn is considering TV spin-offs for Mr. Terrific and Jimmy Olsen, Clark Kent's best friend at The Daily Planet, following their introduction in the superhero pic. This is reportedly part of a broader plan to re-establish all of DC's most iconic characters and assemble them for a new Justice League movie, with the output objective consisting of two live-action films, multiple TV shows, and one animated show per year. The feature piece also shed light on cancelled ideas, such as a Robin series set in Christopher Nolan's Batman universe and Ta-Nehisi Coates' black Superman film, which was allegedly canned because of 'woke' content, whatever that means (and an absurd reason in itself, considering that Superman has plenty to explore about real-world issues). Another notable point was that Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav was in talks with The Rock to fix DC, but talks fell through after the disappointing box office showing of 2022's Black Adam , which starred the professional wrestler as the titular superhero. But first, Henry Corenswet's Man of Steel has the unenviable task of living up to fans' expectations. The second reboot of the Superman film series follows the Last Son of Krypton as he proves to the world that he is their protector after billionaire Lex Luthor ( David Hoult , the X-Men movies ) conducts a plan to turn public opinion against him. Other character appearances in Superman include Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced, Alien: Romulus ), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi, House ), Metamorpho ( Anthony Carrigan , Barry), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion, Firefly ). The highly anticipated flick serves as the launchpad for Chapter One of DC Studios' rebooted cinematic universe, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in June 2026, Clayface in September 2026, The Authority (TBA), The Brave and the Bold , and Swamp Thing . LEGO Rolls Out G1 Transformers Soundwave Set In Aug

LEGO is steadily assembling its Transformers roster, adding the first Decepticon to its line-up with a G1 Transformers Soundwave set due out on 4 August, which can not only transform into a cassette player, but also comes with the character's miniature transformable companions, Ravage and Laserbeak. Marking the third Transformers build of its kind, following 2022's LEGO Optimus Prime and last year's LEGO Bumblebee, the LEGO Soundwave (set 10358) marks multiple firsts for the brand, as not only is it the first Decepticon set, it is also the first to feature companions, and the first to include voice playback, with an included 'play' button on the model's chest that recites Soundwave's iconic lines when pressed. Much like the previous two builds, the set will be targeted at adult collectors, comprising 1,505 pieces and measuring 13 inches (33cm) tall in robot mode, making it almost the same height as the LEGO Optimus Prime build. The main Soundwave figure, alongside the two companions, will all be transformable into their respective cassette player and cassette tape modes without needing to be disassembled and rebuilt. The build will also feature additional accessories like cassettes, a rocket pod, alongside a laser blaster and a dart. The aforementioned sound brick piece also recites five different catchphrases and sound effects when activated, including Soundwave's iconic lines like 'Soundwave superior' and 'Danger, Autobots detected'. As a package, the LEGO Soundwave set presents perhaps the most comprehensive package in the line-up to date, as buyers are essentially getting three Transformers figures in one. The look of the build is also bound to delight fans of the now-retro G1 robot designs, offering an almost one-to-one replica of how the character appeared in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie . The build will also feature knee articulation this time around, a feature sorely missing in the previous two sets, enabling collectors to display the figure in more dynamic poses. The LEGO Transformers Soundwave set will launch on 4 August 2025 exclusively on the LEGO Store, and will be priced at S$259.90.
