M'sian man, Thai girlfriend freed of drug trafficking charge

The Suna day ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has acquitted a Malaysian man and his Thai girlfriend of drug trafficking charges involving 1.2kg of narcotics due to insufficient evidence.
Judge K. Muniandy ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a strong case against the couple, Tan Kah Soon, 49, and Pattarathida Petcharanon, 39.
The judge highlighted critical flaws in the prosecution's case, including gaps in the chain of custody and delays in forensic analysis.
'There were significant weaknesses in the prosecution's case, including issues related to the chain of custody of the evidence and the unexplained time gap between the discovery of the material and its delivery to the laboratory for analysis,' said Muniandy.
The couple had been accused of trafficking 647.1g of methamphetamine and 561.6g of ketamine at a condominium in Taman Desa Petaling, Cheras, in November 2021.
They faced charges under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Zaileen Nadia Zubir led the case, while lawyer Sivahnanthan Ragava represented the accused.
The judge concluded that the scientific evidence did not sufficiently link the drugs to the defendants, leading to their acquittal without requiring a defence. - Bernama

Egyptian man held over suspicion of using fake passport

KOTA BARU: The state Immigration Department has arrested a 28-year-old Egyptian man for allegedly using a fake passport while conducting transactions at its complex here yesterday. Its director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the suspect was detained after his officers discovered irregularities while checking his passport. "The suspect had applied to renew his Long-Term Social Visit Pass as a foreign spouse of a Malaysian. "Checks revealed the Egyptian passport submitted by the suspect showed he had overstayed for more than two years. "He also submitted a newly issued passport bearing the same passport number as the previous one," he said. He added the man was arrested on suspicion of presenting a falsified Egyptian passport and is currently being held at the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot for further investigations. "The department calls on the public to provide information about undocumented migrants or any unlawful activities involving foreign nationals. "Stern and uncompromising action will be taken against any parties found to be harbouring, assisting or colluding in the protection of illegal immigrants," he said.

Melaka KPDN Tracking Five Essential Household Items In Op Kesan 4.0

MELAKA, July 18 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) is focusing on inspecting five essential household items under 'Op Kesan 4.0' launched today to ensure there is no price manipulation of basic consumer goods. Melaka KPDN director Dr Mohd Hazimin Jamaludin said the five items were condensed milk, chocolate malt drinks, wheat flour, sardines and white bread. "This focus is also part of the monitoring measures following the implementation of the Sales Tax rate review and the expanded scope of the Service Tax (SST), which began on July 1. "For the period from July 1 to yesterday (July 17), a total of 35 premises involving 63 stock-keeping units (SKUs) were inspected and a written notice was issued involving three SKUs including a viral case related to the price of ice," he said after conducting an Op Kesan 4.0 monitoring at a supermarket in Angkasa Nuri, Durian Tunggal here today. Elaborating further, Mohd Hazimin said that apart from tracking prices, his department also paid attention to the issue of manipulation in the quantity of goods, such as reducing packaging size without a significant change in price. "Sometimes the price remains the same, but the quantity decreases. What is important is not just cheapness, but fairness to consumers. "We also encourage users who detect any non-compliance to file a complaint via WhatsApp at 019-8488000, the e-complaint portal ( or the call centre 1-800-886-800," he said. Meanwhile, he said the Melaka KPDN enforcement statistics for the period from Jan 1 to July 17 recorded 234 cases under various Acts with a seizure value of RM261,360. "The total value in compounds issued was RM66,700, while the total in fines reached RM299,500. In all, 14 individuals were also detained, involving 13 cases of arrest for further investigation," he said.
