"The science is clear. The Himalayas are sounding the
alarm
," Yadav said, warning that climate change is hastening glacier retreat and endangering water security for downstream populations. He added that Himalayan communities are under threat despite contributing little to the climate crisis, and called for regional cooperation to share scientific knowledge and protect these fragile ecosystems.
The Union minister's call for action comes on the heels of a study published in 'Journal of Glaciology' by Cambridge University Press which revealed a troubling trend at Himachal Pradesh's Gepang Gath glacier: rapid glacial retreat coupled with the dramatic expansion of its proglacial lake -- a water body that forms at the front or side of a glacier and is typically dammed by moraine, glacial ice, or debris.
Over the past six decades, this lake has grown nearly sixfold, from 0.2 km² in 1962 to 1.2 km² in 2023.
Led by scientists from the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research under the ministry of earth sciences, the study links this expansion directly to the glacier's retreat, further accelerated by calving (the breaking off of ice chunks from the glacier's terminus).
Between 2014 and 2023, Gepang Gath retreated 480m, resulting in substantial surface area loss and volume loss (21.7 million cubic metres of ice).
The glacier's mass balance—a critical measure of its health, reflecting the net gain or loss of ice—has shown a consistently negative trend, indicating it is losing more mass than it gains.
The study highlights a dangerous feedback loop: as the lake grows, its relatively warmer water accelerates melting at the glacier's edge, triggering further calving. This retreat creates more room for the lake to expand, reinforcing the cycle and turning a once-stable glacier into a rapidly vanishing ice mass.
The consequences extend well beyond Gepang Gath. Chandra River, fed by meltwater from this glacier and over 210 others in the basin, supports agriculture and hydropower downstream. Continued ice loss could strain water availability, while the expanding proglacial lake raises the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs)—sudden, destructive floods caused by the abrupt release of water from glacier-fed lakes.
GLOFs was, again, something Yadv spoke about at length in Kathmandu.
To prevent such disasters, the study calls for urgent measures, including the establishment of early warning systems for the proglacial lake and enhanced monitoring of glacier-lake dynamics.
These recommendations align with Yadav's five-point global action plan to tackle shared ecological challenges in mountainous regions. One key measure he outlined was building climate resilience through investments in adaptation strategies, early warning systems for hazards like GLOFs, and the development of climate-resilient infrastructure in high-altitude areas.
Gepang Gath is not an isolated case. Across the Himalayas, many lake-terminating glaciers are undergoing similar transformations. The study warns that unchecked glacier retreat and expanding proglacial lakes could severely impact water security in South Asia, where millions rely on glacier-fed rivers for drinking water, agriculture, and energy.

An ICMR study has found that Covid vaccination did not increase the risk of unexplained sudden deaths among young adults in India, Union Health Minister J P Nadda told Lok Sabha on Friday. Past Covid hospitalization, family history of sudden death and certain lifestyle behaviours increased the likelihood of unexplained sudden deaths. Responding to a question, Nadda said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has informed that it and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) explored two approaches to investigate the causes of sudden death. The first approach was a retrospective case-control study to determine the risk factors associated with sudden death and the second approach of the study was to prospectively investigate sudden deaths in young adults using a virtual autopsy approach. The ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) conducted a study titled "Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India -? A multicentric matched case-control study" at 47 tertiary care hospitals located across 19 states and Union territories during May-August 2023. Cases were apparently healthy individuals without any known co-morbidity, who suddenly (less than 24 hours of hospitalization or seen apparently healthy 24 hours before death) died of unexplained causes during October 1, 2021-March 31, 2023, Nadda stated. Four controls were included per case matched for age, gender and neighbourhood. Information was collected regarding data on Covid vaccination/infection, post-Covid conditions, family history of sudden death, smoking, recreational drug use, alcohol frequency, binge drinking and vigorous-intensity physical activity two days before death among the cases or interviewed controls, he said. A total of 729 sudden death cases and 2916 controls were included in the analysis. It was observed that receiving two doses of Covid vaccine significantly reduced the odds of unexplained sudden death, Nadda stated. Past Covid hospitalization, family history of sudden death, binge drinking 48 hours before death/interview, use of recreational drug/substance and performing vigorous-intensity physical activity 48 hours before death/interview increased the odds of sudden death. "Hence, the study observed that Covid vaccination did not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults in India. Past Covid hospitalization, family history of sudden death and certain lifestyle behaviours increased the likelihood of unexplained sudden death," he said. The second study, titled "Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young" conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi with funding and in collaboration with ICMR, is a prospective work aimed at determining the common causes of sudden deaths in young adults. Early analysis of data from the study indicates that heart attacks, or myocardial infarction (MI), continue to be the leading cause of sudden death in this age group. Importantly, no major changes in the pattern of causes have been observed when compared with previous years before the Covid pandemic. Together, these two studies offer a more comprehensive understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults in India, Nadda said. It has also been revealed that Covid vaccination does not appear to increase the risk, whereas, the role of underlying health issues, genetic predisposition and risky lifestyle choices does play a role in unexplained sudden deaths, he said.

New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) Union Health Minister JP Nadda today informed Lok Sabha that Covid-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden deaths, and pointed instead to underlying health issues, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle factors as key contributors. Responding during the ongoing Monsoon Session, Nadda cited findings from multiple studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The studies, he said, had found no evidence linking Covid-19 vaccines to increased mortality among young adults. 'Covid-19 vaccination did not appear to elevate the risk of sudden death,' Nadda stated, adding that factors such as past Covid-19 hospitalisation, family history of sudden death, recreational drug use, binge drinking, and intense physical activity shortly before death were more strongly associated with such cases. Referring to a retrospective case-control study by ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), the Minister said the research covered 47 tertiary care hospitals across 19 states and Union Territories between May and August 2023. It examined 729 sudden death cases involving adults aged 18-45 with no known comorbidities, alongside 2,916 matched controls. The study analysed data related to Covid-19 vaccination status, previous infection, post-Covid conditions, familial health history, and behavioural factors. Notably, individuals who had received two doses of the vaccine showed a significantly lower risk of unexplained sudden death. A second, prospective study led by AIIMS Delhi, in collaboration with ICMR, sought to establish definitive causes of sudden deaths among young adults through virtual autopsy techniques. Preliminary findings reaffirmed that heart attacks, or myocardial infarction (MI), remain the leading cause of sudden deaths in this demographic. Crucially, the pattern of causes has not changed significantly when compared to pre-pandemic years. 'These studies collectively offer a deeper insight into the phenomenon of sudden unexplained deaths,' Nadda said. 'Vaccination is not a contributing factor; rather, it may be protective. The emphasis must remain on identifying and addressing underlying health risks and lifestyle practices.' Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed the House that 164 Covid-related deaths were reported by States and Union Territories between April and July this year. Most of the deceased had existing comorbidities. 'Covid-19 cases saw a modest uptick from late May, but declined significantly by mid-June,' Jadhav said in a written reply. Govindan told a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday that Mr. Trump had warned Google, Meta and Microsoft, among other global software and computing majors, against employing Indian engineers and technicians. Mr. Govindan stated that the 'chest-thumping, extreme nationalists' within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had not dared to make even the slightest whimper of protest against the imperialist and isolationist Trump administration.
