Govt allocates Rs 17 cr for 29 parks in Nellore

Time of India18-06-2025
Tirupati: The state govt has allocated Rs 17 crore for establishment of 29 parks in Nellore, which is aimed at increasing green cover in the town. Nellore rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy laid the foundation stone for 14 parks on Wednesday.
The foundation stone for the establishment of 15 more parks will be laid on Thursday and Friday, he said.
Kotamreddy also made a startling revelation about land sharks encroaching upon reserve lands meant for the establishment of parks across Nellore rural assembly constituency. "Besides cases of encroachment of govt lands, it has also come to our notice that several realtors, who ought to have handed over reserve lands to Nellore municipal corporation, continue to hold the said lands in their possession illegally.
Overall it has been estimated that approximately Rs 150 crore worth lands are in illegal occupation. We have taken up the issue with the state govt and a thorough enquiry will be carried out to expose everyone involved in the dubious land deals besides reclaiming govt lands," the TDP leader asserted.
Thanking the state govt for allocating Rs 17 crore for the establishment of parks, Kotamreddy said works related to all 29 proposed parks will be completed within 90 days.

Maha govt plans to bring in new sand policy for Gharkul beneficiaries

Mumbai: Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday announced in the state Assembly that the government is contemplating formulating a separate policy under which free sand will be transported to the beneficiaries of the Gharkul scheme. Bawankule also clarified in the House that the Tehsildar was suspended after a complaint was filed regarding some sand cases in the Tumsar Assembly constituency. "We don't know who is using whose name. If anyone is misusing my name or the Chief Minister's name, file an FIR directly at the police station. We will put such people in jail," he warned. Minister Bawankule said, "The Gharkul beneficiaries have received royalty, but now the question is – who will deliver the sand to their homes? The transportation cost is Rs 30,000 to 40,000. The beneficiaries cannot afford this much cost. The sand reserves are far away in many places, and it has to be delivered from a distance of 30-50 km." Considering these difficulties, the Revenue Department, in collaboration with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Finance Department, has started considering a new 'Domestic Sand Transport Policy'. The minister said, "I will present a clear plan in this regard before the end of the session. As much help as possible will be provided to the beneficiaries of the Gharkul scheme to ensure easy access to sand." Earlier, Minister Bawankule announced that the transportation of excavated sand will be allowed for 24 hours after taking a valid transport permit in Maharashtra. "As the sand transportation is not permitted between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., the use of sand in the state is not done fully. Therefore, the government, in a bid to promote maximum use of the stock of sand excavated from 6 am to 6 pm, has decided to allow 24-hour transportation by procuring a valid permit, adhering to certain conditions. The government is providing the facility of procuring a valid permit that will be available for 24 hours," he said.

Congress created firm to launder money to avoid its direct name in news headlines: ED to court

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) told a Delhi court Thursday that the Congress created a company called Young Indian to allegedly launder money worth Rs 2,000 crore from Associated Journals Ltd. (AJL) — the company which used to publish the National Herald newspaper — to avoid its 'direct name' appearing in news headlines. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, who appeared for the agency, made these submissions before the court of Special Judge Vishal Gogne while it was hearing arguments on the point of cognizance of the chargesheet filed against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case. The ED's case is that the Congress provided an interest-free loan of Rs 90 crore to AJL, which had assets worth Rs 2,000 crore, for a 'consideration of just Rs 50 lakh'. As per the ED, this debt, which AJL overtook, was allegedly converted into equity in favour of the not-for-profit company Young Indian (YI), in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi held a majority 76% stake. '… such a crucial decision of vesting 99% shareholding of AJL with Young Indian was taken by only 7 members, including the two accused (Sonia and Rahul Gandhi)… there were a total of 1,089 shareholders who weren't consulted. This shows that the whole thing was a fraud,' Raju, who was accompanied by Special Counsel Zoheb Hossain and Special Public Prosecutor NK Matta, told the court. 'They've (Congress leaders) deprived the shareholders of AJL of their right. Young India invested just Rs 50 lakh and got Rs 2,000 crore. YI gained wrongfully and the shareholders suffered,' he added. 'From 70% ownership, the shareholders of AJL dropped to 2%. Nobody in their right mind would agree to this. There can't be a bigger fraud than this,' the ASG submitted. Special Judge Gogne then asked Raju, 'Are the shareholders also witnesses in this case? This is a little peculiar… so shouldn't they also be made witnesses? The ED has not investigated the 1,000 shareholders. So will this trial go on without them being witnesses?' Raju replied: 'The record speaks for itself. This is a classic case of money laundering… the real culprits are these 7 persons, once you pierce the veil… Today, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi hold almost all shares. They're the beneficial owners of the company.' Other than the Gandhis, the ED has also named Congress leaders Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda as accused in the case. Along with this, firms Young India and Dotex Merchandise Pvt. Ltd have also been named. The case originated in 2012 from a criminal complaint filed by the then-BJP Rajya Sabha MP, Subramanian Swamy, against the Gandhis and other leaders of the Congress, where he had accused them of fraud in acquiring AJL's property. In its chargesheet, the ED alleged that YI, which was incorporated in 2010, had the same set of people appointed at various positions as AJL. The Rs 90 crore loan was converted into equity after AJL stated that they wouldn't be able to repay it, alleged the ED. Via this conversion of the loan into equity, claimed the agency, YI, a loss-making company, got 99% ownership of AJL, a company with assets worth Rs 2,000 crore. With the transfer of these shares, the assets of AJL also got transferred to YI, whose beneficial owners were Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, the ED claimed. While the ED has completed its arguments on the cognizance of the chargesheet, senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and RS Cheema are likely to argue on behalf of the Gandhis on Friday.

TN BJP slams MK Stalin govt over attack on journalist, demands immediate action

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has strongly condemned the brutal attack on journalist Silambarasan in Salem district, alleging a complete administrative breakdown under the DMK government and rampant collusion between officials and the sand mafia. Prasad said the incident exposes the growing impunity enjoyed by criminal networks involved in illegal sand mining across the state, and accused the ruling DMK regime of turning a blind eye to the ongoing plunder of Tamil Nadu's natural resources. Journalist Silambarasan was attacked in Velliyampatti near Salem while reporting on red sand theft. According to Prasad, over 30 members of the sand mafia brutally assaulted the reporter, issued death threats, seized his camera, and cut its cables in an attempt to destroy evidence. 'What's worse,' he alleged, 'is that there are credible reports suggesting that the local Tahsildar and the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) were complicit in this attack. This is not just a law-and-order failure—it's a collapse of governance.' ANS Prasad demanded that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin take immediate steps to clamp down on illegal sand mining, which he said has reached unprecedented levels under the current regime. 'The Goondas Act must be invoked against these sand mafia criminals. Their properties and vehicles should be confiscated, and those aiding them within the government must be identified and punished,' he said. He also urged the state to provide journalist Silambarasan with full police protection, stating that 'an honest reporter has risked his life to expose corruption. The government has a duty to ensure his safety.' Prasad accused officials in the Water Resources Department and various district administrations of aiding and abetting the illegal mining racket. The BJP spokesperson demanded a comprehensive intelligence-led investigation to identify and dismiss corrupt government personnel involved in the racket. Quoting Enforcement Directorate reports, Prasad claimed that illegal financial transactions worth Rs 4,730 crore have been linked to the sand mafia in Tamil Nadu. He also pointed out that the Supreme Court, in response to a 2018 petition by Alagarsamy, had ordered Tamil Nadu and four other states to submit reports on illegal sand mining by January 2025. Demanding justice, Prasad called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to thoroughly investigate the sand mining network and administrative collusion. 'This attack on journalist Silambarasan is not an isolated case. It reflects the growing threat to free speech and the safety of whistleblowers under the DMK government,' Prasad said.
