Armaan Malik on audience judging Indian singers doing English songs: In our country, we think lesser of our own artistes

The recent collaboration between singer Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh on Sapphire became an instant hit, with praise being showered on Ed's attempt at Hindi lyrics. While he is happy about the collaboration, singer Armaan Malik states that when the reverse happens, the Indian audience is a bit judgemental. Armaan Malik(Photo: Instagram) 'Indian audience has this preconceived notion that Indian artistes don't sing English well. However, there are so many of us who sing English beautifully, sometimes even better than some of the English artistes. But we just have this feeling in our country where we think of our own people lesser,' says the singer who recently released his song Baari Baari, adding, 'Our biggest drawback is that our Indian audience loves to bring our own people down. I don't know why it is, but it is inherently in our nature.' But Armaan Malik feels things are heading towards a better situation. 'I can see a change now with a lot of people championing Indian artistes because a lot of international artistes are collaborating with Indian artistes. So, suddenly it's cool to support Indian artistes,' he says. While the singer believes it's a great time to be an Indian artiste with so many global collaborations and acceptance happening, he also takes credit for being one of the firsts to do that. 'I did it at a time when no one else was doing it. I kind of opened that portal, which I am very happy I did. In 2020, when pandemic hit and I'd released my debut English single Control, that was the starting point for people viewing an Indian singer differently. I was not then looked at just a playback singer,' he insists. Armaan asserts that it took him a while to venture into English music because he didn't have anyone to look up to doing the same growing up. 'I remember I had this conversation with my father at the age of 14 that I wanted to be an English pop singer, and he was like 'ye kahaan se aaya?' He gave me a great advice, and told me to focus on Hindi music and Bollywood for now, make the following, build yourself as an artiste, become big, then do it. I think that was the greatest advice I ever got. I built my whole career first in my home country, in my home language, and then took the decision to do English pop music. I dreamt of doing this at 14, but I had to wait 10 years to put out my first English song. When I was 14, if someone else was already doing it, I wouldn't had to wait that long. So, when I did it, a lot of kids came up and say thank you as it gave them confidence,' he says, adding, 'The next big global song has got to come from India, and it will happen in the next two to three years.'

Kannappa Box Office Day 4: Vishnu Manchu's Film Sees Monday Dip, Crashes To Rs 1.5 crore

Last Updated: Kannappa, Vishnu Manchu's mythological drama, saw a sharp drop on its first Monday, earning Rs 1.5 crore. Despite a strong opening, the total stands at Rs 24.96 crore. After a decent opening weekend, Kannappa hit a speed bump on Monday. Vishnu Manchu's mythological drama saw a sharp drop in numbers as it managed to collect only Rs 1.5 crore on day 4. Looks like the Monday blues hit the box office too. According to the latest reports, Kannappa earned Rs 1.56 crore on its fourth day, which was also its first Monday in theatres. The film opened strong with Rs 9.35 crore on day one but saw a dip over the weekend, collecting Rs 7.15 crore on Saturday and Rs 6.9 crore on Sunday. With these numbers, the total box office collection so far stands at Rs 24.96 crore. While the start was promising, the film didn't show much growth after the opening day. On Monday, Vishnu Manchu took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a concerning update about Kannappa. The actor revealed that the film has become a victim of piracy, with over 30,000 illegal links already taken down. In a note, he wrote, 'Kannappa is under attack from piracy. This is heartbreaking. Piracy is theft — plain and simple. We don't teach our children to steal. Watching pirated content is no different. Please don't encourage it. Support cinema the right way." Kannappa was released in multiple languages — Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi — but it's the Telugu version that has performed the best so far at the box office. Kannappa is a big moment in Vishnu Manchu's career. It's already his highest-grossing film so far. His earlier releases like Ginna and Mosagallu didn't even manage to touch Rs 1 crore in their entire run. The last time Vishnu had a solid opening was back in 2014 with Rowdy, which made Rs 3 crore on Day 1 and wrapped up its first week at around Rs 11 crore. A review by News18 of Kannappa read, 'The whole sequence and the visual effects are superbly done, an example of how far our cinema has evolved technologically. Back in the day, the same scene would've involved golden cardboard arrows moving at less than 24 frames per second. One arrow would spew fire, the opponent's would quench it with water. If one turned into a snake, the other would become its predator, an eagle. Mukesh Kumar Singh's Kannappa isn't weighed down by such age-old silliness. Here, the fight sequences and visuals look rich. However, if one were to read out the dialogues of Kannappa and any devotional film from the past one after the other, it would be hard to discern which is from 2025 and which is not." Kannappa is a 2025 Telugu-language mythological devotional film directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh. The story is inspired by the legendary devotee of Lord Shiva and has been written by Vishnu Manchu, who also stars as Kannappa. The film is produced by veteran actor Mohan Babu and boasts a star-studded cast including Preity Mukhundhan, Kajal Aggarwal, Mohan Babu, R. Sarathkumar, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Brahmaji, Siva Balaji, Kaushal Manda, Rahul Madhav, Devaraj, Mukesh Rishi, Raghu Babu, and Madhoo in key roles. First Published: July 01, 2025, 07:29 IST
