'To show what is happening': France's top diplomat calls for foreign press access to Gaza

PARIS: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Tuesday called on Israel to allow foreign press into the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza, as warnings of famine mount after 21 months of war.
He spoke after the AFP news agency warned that the lives of Palestinian freelance journalists it was working with in Gaza were in danger and urged Israel to allow them and their families to leave the occupied coastal territory.
"I ask that the free and independent press be allowed to access Gaza to show what is happening there and to bear witness," Barrot told France Inter radio in an interview from eastern Ukraine.
Asked if France would help AFP stringers leave Gaza, Barrot said France was "addressing the issue" and hoped to be able to evacuate freelancers working with French journalists "in the coming weeks."
On Monday, an association of journalists at AFP called the Societe des Journalistes (Society of Journalists) sounded the alarm, urging "immediate intervention" to help reporters working with the agency in Gaza.
The SDJ cited the example of one such freelancer, a 30-year-old living with his family in Gaza City, who reported on Sunday that his older brother "fell because of hunger."
"We have lost journalists in conflicts, we have had injuries and prisoners in our ranks, but none of us can remember seeing a colleague die of starvation," it said.
AFP management responded in a statement posted on X and Instagram which said that it shared the anguish about the "dire situation" of colleagues in Gaza.
"Since October 7, Israel has prohibited access to the Gaza Strip for all international journalists. In this context, the work of our Palestinian freelancers is crucial to inform the world," it said.
"But their lives are in danger, which is why we urge the Israeli authorities to allow their immediate evacuation along with their families."
AFP evacuated its eight staff members and their families from Gaza between January and April 2024.
Barrot called for an "immediate ceasefire" after Israel on Monday expanded military operations to the central city of Deir el-Balah.
"There is no longer any justification for the Israeli army's military operations in Gaza," he said.
"This is an offensive that will exacerbate an already catastrophic situation and cause new forced displacements of populations, which we condemn in the strongest terms."

Is Iran's supreme leader spending his days sleeping and ‘getting high'?

An account on X purportedly linked to the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has alleged that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, spends half of the day sleeping and the other half 'getting high'. Is there any truth to the claims made by the Mossad Farsi account? read more An account on the social media platform X, which is purportedly linked to Israel's national intelligence agency, has made sensational claims about Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Mossad's Farsi account has alleged that the 86-year-old conservative cleric is addicted to drugs. However, there are doubts about the authenticity of the account itself. Mossad has also not officially confirmed that its affiliation. Let's take a closer look. What has Mossad Farsi claimed? The Mossad's Farsi social media account alleged on Friday (July 25) that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, spends his time sleeping and high on drugs. 'How can a leader lead when they sleep half the day and spend the other half high on substances?' the account wrote on Friday on X. 'Water, electricity, life!' The account, with a blue tick, is new and was created just last month. It claims to be the official Mossad spokesperson in Farsi, the official language of Iran. However, the Israeli intelligence agency has not officially confirmed the account is linked to it, as per a Fox News report. Two intelligence agents have claimed the account appears to be authentic. 'Some of the information it has shared could only have come from Mossad,' Beny Sabti, an Iran expert at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies, told JFeed, an Israeli news outlet. Is there any truth to the claims? There is no confirmation of the claims, which just seem to be speculations. However, claims about the Iranian supreme leader's alleged drug use have been made in the past. In 2022, an Iranian academic accused Khamenei of using drugs. 'Many viewers do not know this, but Khamenei himself uses drugs,' Nour Mohamed Omara told a television station in Turkey at the time. 'He has a special village in Balochistan, where the drugs used by the leader are produced. This village is run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and no one is allowed in,' the academic added. Other posts by Mossad Farsi The Mossad-linked account has made many claims about Iran and Khamenei's health over the last month. The account asks Iranians to contact it through 'private messages, for your own security, please ensure you are using a VPN.' After the 12-day Iran-Israel war, the account wrote on X: 'A ceasefire has been put into effect. Now, the extent of the damage is becoming clear. At this moment, the regime is focused on its senior officials, not on caring for its citizens. 'We stand with you and have formed a team of specialised doctors, including experts in cardiology, diabetes. pulmonary diseases, infectious diseases, oncology, as well as support for pregnant women and psychological assistance.' On June 24, United States President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after 12 days of conflict. The Mossad Farsi account's one of the most viral posts was related to the newly appointed commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which is the command headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the regime would not disclose the commander's identity 'for his protection,' the X account claimed to already know the name. It also called on Iranians to send in their guesses. Yemen's Houthis threaten to escalate attacks on ships linked to companies dealing with Israel

ATHENS (GREECE): The rebel Houthi group in Yemen has said it will target merchant ships belonging to any company that does business with Israeli ports, regardless of nationality, as part of what it described as the next phase of its operations against Israel. The Iran-backed Houthis launched a campaign targeting merchant vessels in response to the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, saying they were doing so in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Their attacks over the past two years have upended shipping in the Red Sea through which $1 trillion of goods usually passes each year. In an announcement late Sunday night, the Houthis said they had “decided to escalate their military support operations and begin implementing the fourth phase of the naval blockade” against Israel. They warned that they would target “all ships belonging to any company that deals with the ports of the Israeli enemy, regardless of the nationality of that company, and in any location within the reach of our armed forces.” The vessels would be targeted regardless of their destination, they added.

Murder, rape threats: Karnataka Women's Commission seeks action against Darshan fans for abusing actor-turned-politician Ramya

The Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) Monday wrote to the Bengaluru city police seeking action against those posting derogatory comments against actor-turned-politician Ramya over her post on the Renukaswamy murder case, in which popular Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa is an accused. In a letter to Bengaluru city police commissioner, KSCW chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chowdhary said, 'This is affecting the dignity of women. The State Women's Commission has taken the issue seriously.' The Commission has also demanded that the police ensure that such abusive messages aimed at Ramya are stopped at the earliest. The actor is also expected to file a police complaint later in the day. Ramya, the former MP of Mandya, came under attack from alleged fans of Thoogudeepa after she hailed the Supreme Court, which pulled the Karnataka High Court last week over the granting of bail to the actor in the Renukaswamy murder case. Ramya had posted on X Thursday, 'SC is a ray of hope for the common people of India – justice for the family of Renukaswamy.' Responding to the trolling and abusive messages, Ramya had Sunday posted on Instagram, 'To all the DBoss fans – Welcome to my Instagram. Your comments are proof why Renukaswamy's family needs justice!' Some fan accounts of Ramya had also shared the abusive messages sent to her on X and Instagram, with some texts suggesting that she should be killed for her comments following the Supreme Court order. Rape threats were also issued against the actor. Ramya had faced a similar attack after posting a social media message following his arrest last year. Then, she had posted that no one was above the law, and no one should take the law into their hands. Renukaswamy was allegedly murdered for sending abusive messages to Thoogudeepa's friend and fellow actor Pavithra Gowda. Thoogudeepa was granted bail in December last year, which was challenged in the Supreme Court.
