Nasser Hussain, Vaughan unleash on 'panicky' England as Oval humiliation draws fire: 'Would've been a travesty had...'
In the Bazball era, England have built a reputation as formidable chasers. Although no team had ever successfully chased 374 at The Oval, England had pulled off fourth-innings chases of 370+ twice in recent years — both against India, including one earlier in this series at Leeds.
Riding on a century stand between Harry Brook and Joe Root, who forged a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket on Day 4 of the fifth Test, England appeared on the verge of a record-breaking win in London. But it all unraveled quickly. Either side of the Tea break, India snared three quick wickets for just 26 runs before wrapping up the final four in the first hour on Day 5, eventually bowling England out for 367.
Speaking to Sky Cricket, Nasser said it would have been a "travesty" had England sealed a 3-1 series win in London against India.
'It would have been a travesty had England won the series 3-1. India deserve to make to 2-2 for the amount of good cricket they have played in this series. The final scoreline was well and truly deserved by India, and it was very fitting for Siraj to get the final wicket,' he said.
Vaughan, on the other hand, questioned England's approach in the chase, especially on the final day, saying they lost their nerve under pressure, opting for high-risk strokes instead of building a steady partnership
'You have to say that England did panic. The ball was swinging around and they went for this high-risk attacking option. They just needed one partnership. They panicked in a way that they can with the way that they play. It's not panic — it's just the way that they play. They play with a huge amount of aggression,' he told BBC Test Match Special.
From 301 for three right before Tea on Day 4, England lost their final seven wickets for just 66 runs. This was their lowest margin of defeat in a Test match at home in 123 years. The previous lowest was by three runs, against Australia in Manchester, in 1902.

Young Indian team shows plenty of character in a fascinating series
Not many had pinned hopes on India when the team landed in England for the five-match Test series a couple of months ago. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma moving on from the format, the team certainly lacked experience. Under Shubman Gill, the onus was on the youngsters to step up. For most of the players, it was their maiden, or second, tour of England, and there were apprehension about how they would adapt to the conditions, handle the pressure and deliver. Of course, there were doubts about the bowling unit, too. As it was decided well in advance that Jasprit Bumrah would play just three games in the series, there were questions about whether Indian fast bowlers, sans Bumrah, had the ability to claim 20 wickets? But as they say, cricket stops for no one. This England tour once again proved that. A rather inexperienced team coming from behind to draw the inaugural edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 also proved that the future of Indian cricket is in safe hands. Coming on the back of two consecutive Test series defeats — to New Zealand at home and at the hands of Australia away — the pressure was mounting on the team. But, Gill led from the front and went on to score 754 runs in 10 innings to give the Indian batting line-up the much-needed stability. He had initial troubles with the incoming ball, but the elegant player made a few adjustments to his batting and ended the tour with four centuries, including a double ton. And, as Gill led by example, it came as a motivation to his teammates, too. Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a brilliant start. The left-hander set the tone before going through a lull. However, he came good in the crucial final Test with a century. K.L. Rahul looked solid at the top of the order, and then, there were Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar who ensured that the middle-order was taken care of. India managed to stay alive in the series, courtesy Washington and Jadeja's battling hundreds at Old Trafford in the fourth Test. As captain Gill said, it was a 'team effort'. In the absence of Bumrah, Siraj operated tirelessly. He bowled 185.3 overs in the series — 1,113 deliveries to be specific — and finished as the top wicket-taker with 23 scalps. He inspired his new-ball partners — Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna — and tested the England batters throughout. Siraj bowled his heart out and wore his heart on his sleeve. It was a similar story with Rishabh Pant too as he braved a broken foot to take his side to a fighting total in the first innings of the Old Trafford Test. Those moments defined the team. Of course, there were some bizarre decisions. Benching a wrist-spinner of Kuldeep Yadav's calibre wasn't ideal. One also got to feel for Abhimanyu Easwaran and Arshdeep Singh. But, in the end, as India tied a Test series in the Old Blighty for the second successive time, all that took a back seat.

However, Mohammed Siraj stepped up, receiving significant support from Prasidh Krishna, to deliver a fighting performance on the final day of the tour. Siraj claimed five wickets, while Krishna took four, leading India to a historic win in London. Meanwhile, Bumrah participated in three Tests of the tour – Leeds, Lord's, and Manchester – and took 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, before being released from the fifth Test squad. The 31-year-old Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs across three games and took 14 wickets. Twice Bumrah returned five-wicket hauls — at the Headingley in the first Test and at the Lord's in the third game. In the fourt Test, Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the first innings of the fourth Test — the most he has bowled in a single innings — but returned figures of 2 for 103, the first time he conceded over 100 runs in a Test innings. The number of deliveries he bowled over 140kph dropped significantly over the series — from 42.7% at Headingley, to 22.3% at Lord's, and just 0.5% at Old Trafford. Bumrah now has 219 wickets in 48 Tests. Prior to India's departure, chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar had confirmed that the pace ace won't play more than three Tests keeping his workload management in mind. When Will Jasprit Bumrah play Next? Following a month-long rest, Bumrah is expected to be available for the Asia Cup T20 in the UAE from September 9 to 28. 'Look if Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and if India go the distance till September 28, he won't obviously play the West Indies Test series starting October 2. However, if there are no injuries, he will certainly play the two Tests against World champions South Africa in November," a senior BCCI official privy to current happenings told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
