‘You need a dictionary': SC to probe team as Ashoka prof Ali Khan Mahmudabad gets relief
"You don't require him (Mahmudabad), you require a dictionary," Justice Surya Kant said, according to news agency ANI.
Mahmudabad, associate professor and head of the political science department at Ashoka University in Haryana's Sonipat, got interim bail on May 21 after his arrest by the state police on May 18 over two Facebook posts related to Operation Sindoor.
On Wednesday, the bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi set a four-week deadline for the investigation team, which the SC had formed to probe the two social media posts.
The court also explained that its bail conditions allowed the professor to write articles and opinions online, except on matters that are sub judice.
From the SIT, it enquired why it was expanding its scope beyond the two posts, though, and why it needed his gadgets at all.
"We are asking why the SIT is, on the face of it, misdirecting itself. They were supposed to examine the contents of the posts," Justice Kant told Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was representing the state.
'Why take gadgets, ask about foreign trips?'
The court's remarks came after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mahmudabad, told the bench that the SIT had not only seized his devices but was questioning him over his foreign trips of the last 10 years. He has been summoned four times by the SIT, Sibal said.
Sibal said that by its May 28 order, the top court had directed the SIT to confine its probe to the contents of the social media posts.
The bench thus noted that Mahmudabad has cooperated with the investigation and surrendered his devices; therefore, he should not be summoned again.
Mahmudabad is charged with, among other things, endangering India's sovereignty, unity and integrity for his comments on Operation Sindoor.
The State Women's Commission had earlier termed Mahmudabad's social media comments as disparaging toward women officers in the Indian Armed Forces and said it also promoted communal disharmony.
Mahmudabad clarified that his comments had been completely misunderstood.

Singapore eatery owner found dead day after accusing Indian woman of staging injury for compensation
In a tragic turn of events, a woman in Singapore died suddenly just a day after publicly accusing her Indian employee of faking a workplace injury to claim compensation. The incident has sparked widespread discussion in Singapore, with local authorities now treating her death as an 'unnatural' one and launching an investigation. Jane Lee, who owned a food outlet called Sumo Salad, had taken to Facebook just a day before her death to share detailed allegations against an Indian national, Sran Kiranjeet Kaur. Ms Lee accused Kaur of staging an injury towards the end of her employment contract, allegedly to claim compensation through Singapore's work injury system. According to reports by Channel News Asia (CNA), Ms Lee claimed that Kaur said she slipped and fell on an escalator while taking out rubbish, an incident Ms Lee believed was deliberately planned. In her post, she wrote, 'She was supposed to leave early that day. Instead, she stayed back and staged the incident.' Lee further alleged that the worker's husband, also from India, and a legal firm were involved in 'coaching' individuals on how to exploit workplace injury claims for monetary benefits. 'She would limp and exaggerate her condition in front of doctors, but I've seen her moving and working normally at other times,' Lee wrote, adding that she had video evidence to support her claims. She also alleged that small business owners, especially those without adequate insurance, were being 'targeted' by such fraudulent strategies. In her post, Lee urged Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the police to take action and prevent similar cases in the future. 'I fear I won't be the last,' she wrote. The Singapore Police Force has since confirmed they are treating Lee's death as unnatural, though the cause remains unknown at this stage. The Ministry of Manpower told CNA it is currently working with the company's insurer to assess the validity of the injury claim. 'MOM will not hesitate to act against anyone found abusing the Work Injury Compensation system,' the ministry said in a statement. 'Employers with concerns about fraudulent claims are encouraged to approach us.' Lee was reportedly in her 40s and left behind two children. Her Facebook posts and untimely death have stirred emotional reactions online, with many calling for a thorough investigation and greater scrutiny into work injury compensation processes, the media outlet reported.

'Daal mein kuch kaala hai': Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi over Trump's 'ceasefire' claim; calls for discussion in Parliament
NEW DELHI: Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a direct attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of remaining silent on repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Gandhi asked why the Prime Minister had failed to respond even once to Trump's persistent claims, calling it a matter of national concern. 'You are saying that Operation Sindoor is ongoing, and on one hand, you say that we have become victorious. On the other side, Donald Trump has said this 25 times—that he stopped Operation Sindoor. Kuch na kuch toh daal mein kaala hai na,' Gandhi told reporters outside the Parliament. Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping a potential conflict between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, including saying that his intervention prevented a nuclear escalation. 'They shot down five planes in the last attack... I called them and said no more trade if you do this. They are both powerful nuclear nations… and I stopped it,' Trump said in a recent speech. Rahul Gandhi, highlighting Trump's 25 public claims in 73 days, questioned why Modi had not issued a single clarification. 'PM is not able to make a single statement, whereas Donald Trump has said this 25 times,' he said. 'Those who call themselves patriots just ran away,' Rahul said, taking a swipe at the ruling party. 'Of course, he did the ceasefire. It is a fact. How can the Prime Minister give a statement? What will he say—that Trump did the ceasefire? He can't say that. But this is the truth. Trump has done the ceasefire, and the whole world knows it,' he added. Congress leaders have been pressing the government to respond to Trump's statements and to address issues like the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent military operations. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had ealrier also accused the Prime Minister of avoiding parliamentary debate on the matter. 'President Trump reaches the silver jubilee on his ceasefire claim. He has trumpeted 25 times in the last 73 days, but the Prime Minister is totally quiet—finding time only to travel abroad and destabilise democratic institutions at home,' Ramesh posted on X. With Parliament repeatedly disrupted over issues including the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, Congress has demanded that PM Modi address both Houses and clarify India's position, especially in light of Trump's repeated claims on foreign mediation.
