Sabah tourism earns RM3.3bil in receipts for the first five months of 2025
The state's improving security and international appeal have contributed to this upward trend.
Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai credited the rise in tourist numbers to enhanced security measures, particularly the efforts of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom).
He noted that Sabah has had no kidnapping-for-ransom incidents in recent years, reinforcing its reputation as a safe destination.
'This complements the continuous efforts of the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) to position Sabah as a safe and welcoming destination,' he said.
According to STB data, international visitors made up 559,150 arrivals, while domestic tourists accounted for 879,420.
China remained the leading international market with 243,688 visitors, followed by South Korea with 76,685.
European arrivals also saw a significant increase, rising by 25.6 per cent to 35,240 visitors.
The United Kingdom and Ireland led with 13,910 arrivals, followed by Germany (3,854) and France (2,750). The United States contributed 9,356 arrivals, while Canada recorded 2,949. - Bernama

EU parliament approves start of automated border system
STRASBOURG: The European Parliament gave final approval Tuesday to a phased rollout of a new border check system for non-EU nationals which will do away with passport stamps. The so-called Entry/Exit System (EES), was supposed to kick in last November but was delayed at the last minute as several states were not ready. First agreed on in 2017, the automated system will record visitors' date of entry and exit and keep track of overstays and refused entries. Visitors to the bloc's Schengen free movement area will also have biometric data -- facial images and fingerprints -- collected at ports of entry. 'The aim is to improve security, speed up the border check process, and reduce queues,' the European Parliament said. But some have raised fears that a rushed implementation could lead to longer waiting times for people travelling to Europe on trains, ferries and planes. London's mayor Sadiq Khan warned last year it could trigger 'chaos' at the British capital's Eurostar cross-Channel rail hub, St Pancras station. The UK, which left the European Union in 2020, this year launched its own digital travel permit, which is mandatory for European visitors. Under the roll-out approved by European lawmakers in Strasbourg, with 572 votes in favour and 42 against, the EU scheme will be implemented over a six-month period. The exact date is to be decided by the European Commission after the law is formally adopted and enters into force. Member states would ramp up towards operating the EES system at half of border crossing points after three months and by six months countries should be registering all individuals using the system. – AFP

Sabah tourism generates over RM16 billion under SMJ Plan

Tourists included 5.45 million domestic and 2.4 million international visitors. From January to May 2025 alone, Sabah welcomed 1.44 million tourists, generating RM3.3 billion in spending. New investments include the Sheraton Kota Kinabalu (opening Q3 2025), Club Med Borneo Kuala Penyu (July 2026), InterContinental Papar (2027), and Hilton Garden Inn Tuaran.
