Mary Earps: Queen of Stops review – if only this history-making goalkeeper was still in the England squad

The Guardian02-07-2025
Mary Earps: Queen of Stops first arrived on iPlayer at the end of May. Even then, it was unfortunate timing, appearing just three days after the goalkeeper's shock announcement that she would be retiring from international football with immediate effect. It comes to terrestrial television a month later, and does feel like a documentary made for an England Euros campaign with Earps in the squad. Nevertheless, it channels her ambition, drive and amazing achievements into a pleasant hour that should spark memories, or premonitions, of the tensions to come over the next few weeks.
Sportspeople are not always the most absorbing of subjects. To me, this seems a fair exchange, in the great cosmic talent pool: you can either be superhumanly athletic, or you can be charismatic. To be both is borderline greedy. This balancing act does mean that great documentaries about sporting stars are few and far between.
Earps has always been a bit different. When she won the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award in 2023, the personality part shone as much as the sport. With England, she had won the Euros in 2022, and got to a World Cup final just a year later, taking small consolation from walking away with the Golden Glove if not the ultimate prize. She had also fought for an England women's goalkeeper's replica shirt to go on sale, after realising there was no plan to release one. Here, it sounds as if she spoke out, despite knowing it could be a risky move.
This documentary hones in on the two history-making tournaments, but it does have time to whiz through what got her there in the first place. She reminisces about playing against Hucknall Town for West Bridgford Colts as a youngster and how saving a penalty became her lightbulb moment. (It's another side of Hucknall, which is having a big 2025 on TV, as the setting for the outstanding drama What It Feels Like For a Girl.) She bounced around various clubs from 2011 until she signed for Manchester United in 2019. This serves as a solid overview of women's football over the past two decades. Like many women, she wasn't sure that football could be a sustainable career, and she describes having to 'gamble' on whether it was worth taking that chance on herself.
It's safe to say that her career gamble paid off. Earps comes across as a considered decision-maker, even when taking on Nike over the replica shirt. She describes her personal low, of finally getting her chance to start for England under Phil Neville, only to receive 'brutal feedback' following a loss to Germany. She was not called up again, and remembers it being a 'very lonely' time. Loneliness is a theme. From her current training ground at Paris Saint-Germain, she talks about how the keeper's lot can be a solitary one. They train separately, are analysed separately; other goalkeepers, as she has recently learned, are competition.
In fact, by 2021, Earps had, notoriously, almost given up on international football. It took a new England manager, Sarina Wiegman, to spot her talent and put her trust in her for the now infamous Euros of 2022. It is strange to look back and think that it was ever a risk, but Earps says she thinks people questioned both her experience and Wiegman's decision-making. We all know how she responded to the pressure, though there are some nice anecdotes here, such as a revelation about what the England captain, Leah Williamson, shouted in her ear after they beat Spain in the quarter finals.
During the World Cup, Earps' parents briefly went viral when they were interviewed by a reporter who had no idea who they were and wanted to know how they got their hands on a goalkeeper's shirt. Sadly, they don't reference that lovely moment here, but her mother and her brother pop over to Paris to see her, and, in the case of her brother, to tease her, in a way that only siblings can.
Elsewhere, there are the standard supportive tales from her teammates. The eternally good value Ella Toone turns up and jokes that she's 'talking about Mazza again', before discussing their sisterly relationship. Alessia Russo talks about Earp's 'tunnel vision' on game day. Lucy Bronze and Jill Scott recall Earps' early days in the squad, and Wiegman talks about the potential she saw in her.
Watching replays of those thrilling moments from 2022, and from the 2023 World Cup – the goals scored, but of course, the crucial saves, too – should be more than enough to rev England fans up for the start of another Euros campaign, though this documentary is also bittersweet, given that Earps won't be there to play her part in it.
Mary Queen of Stops aired on BBC One and is on iPlayer now.

Djeidi Gassama brace puts much-changed Rangers in control against Viktoria Plzen

Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers battered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifier at Ibrox. The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. The Light Blues will be heavy favourites for the return game in the Czech Republic next Tuesday, with a play-off tie against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaiting the winners. After pointing the finger at his under-performers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably Gers' best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. New signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut – and was terrific – with left-back Jefte, midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past keeper Florian Wiegele. After Gers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from visiting captain Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jamelka. Bizarrely Raskin, warming up on the sidelines, was booked by French referee Clement Turpin for apparently trying to interfere at a Plzen throw-in as the Czech side began to exert some pressure. However, when a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, referee Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right. There were occasional moments of sloppiness in the Gers ranks throughout the rest of the second half but they remained unpunished. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done, before in the 83rd minute Gers keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. After the negativity of Fir Park, it was a more positive performance from the home side although there has to be much more to come from Martin's men.

BBC The Repair Shop viewers demand show is taken off air after Jay Blades rape charges

Viewers were shocked to see that The Repair Shop aired in its usual slot on BBC One on Tuesday, just hours after host Jay Blades had been charged with two counts of rape The Repair Shop returned to its usual slot on BBC One on Tuesday evening at 8pm, but viewers were quick to demand that it be taken off air. Earlier today, former host Jay Blades, who stepped down from the show over a year ago, was charged with two counts of rape, with the presenter set to appear in court in August. Even though he did not feature in the new episode, social media users were shocked to see that the programme had even been broadcast at all, and demanded that it be pulled. One wrote on X: "Surely you must take the Repair shop off now if the presenter is accused of physical rape," and another asked: "Will the BBC be pulling repeats of The Repair Shop now?" A third wrote: "Could never see the point of him being in the Repair Shop he never restored anything but worn a new leather apron the show is better without him now." The contents of the episode went ahead as normal and followed the team as they restored a silver statuette that survived a shipwreck, a traditional Iranian baby hammock, a concrete portrait and a flight case once owned by rock legend Trevor Bolder. It comes after Jay Blades appeared in court hours after unrelated rape charges. The TV presenter also appeared in court today via video link on a controlling or coercive behaviour charge, which he denies, after being charged with two counts of rape. He initially stepped back from his role as presenter on the BAFTA Award-winning programme last year following the murder of his uncle. At the time, he wrote on Instagram: "I've just been to my uncle's funeral, he was murdered a few weeks ago. Really, super nice guy, shouldn't have happened to him, but it really affected me. "So what I'm intending on doing is this... I'm coming off social media for a bit, and I'll be back in a bit. Going to go and get some therapy and just chill out." Shortly afterwards in May 2024, it was reported that Blades was taking a break from TV following the breakdown of his marriage and his uncle's shock murder, with the BBC show claiming that they would simply be "carrying on without him". A source explained to The Sun at the time: "Jay has taken a step back and is having a break from filming The Repair Shop. His uncle's murder in March and the breakdown of his marriage means he has decided to take some time out. The Repair Shop is carrying on without him for now and the other repairers are hard at work. People who worked with Jay said they were shocked to hear his marriage to Lisa has ended. It was not well known at all among the people who work on the show." Blades last appeared on The Repair Shop in episodes of the show's 13th series, having appeared in episode 11 just under a year ago. The BBC is yet to confirm whether Blades will return to the show. While Blades was previously the show's foreman, that role is now shared between experts Will Kirk and Dominic Chinea. The Mirror has reached out to the BBC for comment. In a statement on Tuesday, police also confirmed separate charges of rape. The force said: 'Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape. He is due to appear at Telford Magistrates' Court on 13 August 2025.' Prior to that, West Mercia Police confirmed charges against the 55-year-old presenter, who stepped back from hosting The Repair Shop last year, and said that a magistrates' court date is set for Wednesday 13 August. "Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape," a spokesperson for the force told The Mirror. "He is due to appear at Telford magistrates' court on 13 August 2025."

Fake or Fortune guest left speechless as 'forgotten' auction painting worth £50,000

A Fake or Fortune guest was left stunned when he learned the staggering value of his item on Monday. A Fake or Fortune guest was left speechless as his "forgotten" auction painting was worth £50,000. ‌ Robjn Cantus, who lives near Cambridge, bought more than 30 paintings during a "trolley dash" at an auction house back in 2020. ‌ He was particularly excited to pick up a painting by Vera Cunningham, which was one of two items in the same lot attributed to the artist. Robjn paid £35 for the pair, but only wanted one of them. ‌ On the latest episode of Fake or Fortune, which aired on Monday (August 4), Robjn was stunned to discover that the "by-product" painting was actually a forgotten original by Frances Hodgkins, which was worth around £50,000. Hodgkins is regarded as one of New Zealand's most revered expatriate artists. ‌ Mary Kisler, an art historian from New Zealand and Hodgkins expert, studied the painting on the BBC show. "You can read Robjn's painting as fitting in to a really large number of Hodgkins' works. When you lay those works side-by-side, you can see absolutely that Robjn's work fits among them," she said. "I do wonder if this is October Landscape," Mary added, referring to a painting by Hodgkins that had not been found. "I think it's a damn good one - I'd love to have it myself." ‌ Host Fiona Bruce added: "It's phenomenal... For Robjn, it's the find of a lifetime." Speaking to Metro about the staggering valuation, Robjn shared his surprise, saying: "I did wonder if it was the painting of a schoolchild when I first saw it. ‌ "I didn't really think much of it, just shoved it into an air-conditioned barn, and it went into my storage area to be forgotten." Robjn also remained adamant that his rare item isn't for sale, adding: "Since filming, I've forgotten about it, really. "For many viewers, the show is all about wealth - but I bought the painting in 2020, and I've got to the end of this journey. "To have it authenticated after trying for all those years is worth more than the value."
