No need for Celtic transfer panic yet as Rangers get unanimous Jury verdict with Panathinaikos predictions

No need for Celtic transfer panic yet as Rangers get unanimous Jury verdict with Panathinaikos predictions

Daily Record5 hours ago
Our Record Sport quartet debate four big questions in Scottish football from European action to transfers ahead of the big kick-off
Do you fancy Rangers to come through against Panathinaikos?
KEITH JACKSON: A two goal start from the first leg certainly gives Russell Martin and his men a bit of breathing space in scorching Athens but the job is only half done. It could be a long night on Wednesday and especially if the Greeks score early. But if Rangers strike first they could take the sting out of a potentially tricky tie.

CRAIG SWAN: The two-goal cushion earned at Ibrox is priceless and, provided they can see off an expected early thrust from the Greeks, it should be a big enough buffer.

GRAEME YOUNG: Yes. Their current fragility is cancelled out by their willingness to go for the jugular. Russell Martin won't camp in and they are a threat on the break and that will see them through.
MICHAEL GANNON: Rangers can finish the job but it won't be a comfortable night. The Greeks have to go for it and there will be opportunities on the break.
Where are Celtic placed heading into the new campaign?
KEITH: With some serious work still to do in the transfer market. Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn have gone without being adequately replaced and Jota will be on a treatment table for the rest of this year. As things stand Brendan Rodgers has every right to make demands of his board.
CRAIG: The start of the season and the end of the transfer window are two different places. The squad will be stronger by August 31. But it's not fully equipped yet and getting through the Champions League qualifier is vital.
GRAEME: The mood music over transfers has been brooding but the product on the pitch has been harmonious bar the gaffe-filled second half against Ajax. Benjamin Nygren appears capable of a Matt O'Riley impact. If they get their marquee signs right then all will be well.

MICHAEL: With a strong squad in a lot of places and gaps in others. Brendan Rodgers knows he's short of attackers but there's time to fill in the blanks.
Can Hearts make a genuine push to split the Old Firm under Derek McInnes?
KEITH: That's precisely what Derek McInnes will be hoping to achieve. With Rangers going through another summer of transition and Celtic slow off the blocks in the market he'll believe there is an opportunity for Hearts to lay down a meaningful early marker. With no European football to distract them and Tony Bloom's financial muscle, why can't they get involved in the argument?
CRAIG: They can make a push towards it, but it's a tall order for the new manager to actually do it in his first season at the club. It's a building job. Derek McInnes should be afforded patience on that front.

GRAEME: It will be tough. Odds of 16/1 for title glory appear bookie bait but Hearts boast a criminally underrated manager who is embracing a brave new dawn. The computer says yes in the coming years but finishing third has to be the main target.
MICHAEL: Hearts should be ambitious but it's tough to take on the big two. It the Jambos finish third it's a good achievement.

Who is best equipped to make a splash in the Premiership of the promoted sides, Falkirk or Livingston?
KEITH: Falkirk have been catching the eye for some time on their journey up through the leagues. Fingers crossed they'll be a breath of fresh air now they're finally back in the top flight.
CRAIG: Tough call. John McGlynn has a vibrant young team and David Martindale is a maestro at Livi. Perhaps both can, but it's going to be some scrap again at the bottom.
GRAEME: Falkirk, John McGlynn has the air of an accidental hero about him but there's nothing lucky about his success with the Bairns. Their willingness to play their own daring way will once again yield results.
MICHAEL: Livingston will be back like they were never away and as tough as ever, especially at home. Falkirk will surprise a few teams and don't bet against them staying up.

Valur Reykjavik officials are today finalising transfer a transfer deal with Hearts for midfielder Tomas Bent Magnusson. The Icelandic club have agreed terms with Tynecastle officials, and 22-year-old Magnusson is preparing to fly to Scotland this week. He will undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract in Edinburgh. Valur left the player out of their Besta Deild Karla league win against Hafnarfjordur on Sunday in the knowledge that he has played his last game for them. Hearts made an official approach for Magnusson last week as head coach Derek McInnes looks to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season. Provided there are no late setbacks, he could be signed and registered in time to make an SPFL debut in Hearts' opening Premiership match in seven days' time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Speaking exclusively to the Edinburgh News, the Valur football chairman Bjorn Steinar Jonsson explained that the six-figure deal with Hearts is all close to being completed. 'It's more or less in place. We are just working on finalising that today,' he said. 'I met Tomas last night at our game and he was not sure which day he will go. Probably in the next few days he will travel to Scotland for a medical.' Magnusson is an energetic central midfielder who offers an attacking threat at set-pieces. He joined Valur after winning the Icelandic second division last year with IBV despite an opportunity to move to England at the time. After progressing quickly in the top flight and playing UEFA Conference League qualifiers this month, he is now destined for the Scottish Capital. Jonsson provided an insight into the player's attributes and character. 'In our team, I think he is best playing as a defensive midfielder in the No.6 position,' stated the chairman. 'That is where he has shown his best ability. He is primarily a defensive midfielder. Valur have a lot of possession in most games, they are a tough team, and he has moved forward with the team to score some goals. Partly that has come from set-pieces, where he can definitely be dangerous with his heading ability. He is also fighting for the second ball and winning it in those situations. 'Tomas has taken a big step with us this season. He only joined us after last season. He was playing with his hometown club, IBV, from the Vestmannaeyjar islands. He took a big step this season and has been an important player for us in domestic matches. He also played very well in our European Conference League games so far this year. If he continues and takes the next step, I think he can definitely be strong enough for Scotland. I would think it is a league that fits him well. He is a young player and he needs to take the next steps on his journey to be able to fight into the Hearts team. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad English transfer interest in Icelandic midfielder 'This transfer only came up a few days ago and it's an opportunity for him. When he was joining our club, he almost signed for a club in England and we just managed to sign him. We knew his dream was to take the next step and go abroad to test his skills there. Hearts is a big club and we have sold players to them before [goalkeeper Haraldur Bjornsson in 2005]. This is an opportunity we definitely want to see Tomas take and hopefully he will be successful at it.' Jonsson compared Magnusson to the former Iceland international defender Herman Hreidarsson, who coached the player at IBV last year. 'He had a great season last year when IBV won the second division here in Iceland and got promoted. He was one of the best players in that league,' explained Jonsson. 'We had recommendations from his coach there, Herman Hreidarsson, and he gave a very high recommendation as one of the favourite players he had coached. Tomas has similar abilities to what Hreidarsson had during his career - a fighter and a good team player. Hreidarsson was a defender, a bit of a different player, but you can definitely see some of the same qualities in Magnusson. 'Both guys come from the Vestmannaeyjar islands, so you definitely have some of the same characteristics in players. Tomas will fight and do all he can do for his team. With that, he builds good team spirit with his team-mates. He really helped us build a good team dynamic in the last few months. He came into our club as a new guy and fitted in well. He is unafraid, open, smiling, young, and he will fit in really well to a team. I think he will be an important part of the Hearts squad. He needs to adapt to a new country but he is an open, fun and energetic guy.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts plan to sign Magnusson to harness his development over the next few years, with the potential to sell him for future profit. That appears to align with the player's ambition, too. 'Definitely. I think that's where his aspirations lie,' said Jonsson. 'He wants to go there, fit in, shine and take the next step. I think he definitely has all the ability for that to happen but he needs to put a lot of work in.' Hearts are hopeful of completing the signing of Burkina Faso international forward Pierre Landry Kabore as soon as possible. They working to secure all the paperwork to confirm Kabore as their eighth summer signing, with Magnusson to follow as the ninth. McInnes has already welcomed seven new recruits to Riccarton since pre-season began - Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink, Greek winger Alexandros Kyziridis, Portuguese forward Claudio Braga, Irish midfielder Oisin McEntee, Belgian striker Elton Kabangu, Scottish centre-back Stuart Findlay and Albanian winger Sabah Kerjota. Ex-Rangers star John Lundstram ‘leaves Trabzonspor training camp to TERMINATE contract'

IT'S only a year since John Lundstram swapped Rangers for Trabzonspor. But it looks very much like he's moving on, again according to shock reports out of Turkey. 2 John Lundstram's time at Trabzonspor could be coming to an end Credit: Getty 2 Lundstram played for Rangers between 2021 and 2024 Credit: Willie Vass Lundstram, 31, spent three years with Rangers between 2021 and 2024. He established himself as a fans' favourite during his debut season as he helped inspire the Gers to the Europa League Final - scoring the goal that got them there by beating RB Leipzig. The midfielder moved on last summer at the end of his contract. Both Lundstram and teammate Borna Barisic were snapped-up by Turkish giants Trabzonspor. But it looks like his Turkish adventure could be over after just one season. That's because shock reports out of the country claim Lundstram is about to TERMINATE his contract. The former Sheffield United ace signed a three-year when he joined Trabzon last year. There had been previous murmurs that Lundstram's time with the club could be coming to an end. Turkish Super Lig clubs are only permitted to have a certain number of overseas players in their squads and Lundstram had been previously namechecked as one foreign player who could be moved on to make way for new recruits this summer. Now, several reports out of Turkey are claiming that Lundstram has left Trabzonspor's pre-season training camp - in order to TERMINATE his deal. Rangers transfer special assesses whether Conor Coady deal is OFF, if Hamza Igamane will leave and when the Gers can expect more incomings It's been reported by several outlets, including Karadeniz de Sonnokta and Fanatik, that Lundstram left the camp early before its conclusion on Sunday. It's been claimed further that he's doing so to bring his time at the club to an end in order to join Hull City. To join Hull, Lundstram would HAVE to be a free agent. That's because the English Championship club are currently under a signing embargo that does not allow them to pay a fee to sign any players. A contract termination would free up Lundstram to be able to join Hull. The Fanaktik report states that he left the camp in order to hold talks with the English club. Lundstram came through the youth ranks at Everton but failed to make a senior appearance for the Toffees. He had loan spells at six different clubs before joining Oxford United permanently in 2015. The midfielder moved on to Sheffield United two days later and proved a key player during the Blades' stint in the Premier League between 2019 and 2021. He then joined Rangers on a free transfer following United's relegation and headed for Turkey last summer. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

'Dream': Oscar Onley matches Scottish record at Tour de France

Cyclist Oscar Onley equalled the best-ever Scottish finish in the Tour de France at the weekend and says the performance has 'sparked a dream' for the future. The 22-year-old finished fourth to match a 41-year-old record set by Philippa York, who was then known as Robert Millar, in 1984. Speaking afterwards, Onley, who finished one minute and 12 seconds behind third-placed Florian Lipowitz, insisted he never had any plans for the general classification (overall standings) at the start of the race. He told ITV Sport: 'We never really had the plan to go for GC in the beginning. It was more just see how it goes. 'To be honest, I've never even thought about a top five in the Tour before, so to get it in my first try in GC is quite incredible and I'm excited for the future. 'It gives me a lot of confidence for the upcoming races as well as these are the top guys and in top shape in the biggest race. 'So if I can do it here then why not in other races? 'I've just taken every day as it's come really and not made any extra stress as the Tour is already stressful enough, just to ride and compete. 'I'm really happy with how myself and the team have managed these three weeks. 'I guess this is a really big moment in my career. 'I don't really realise it yet, but I think just with talking to other riders, going forward now we have something to build on and an exciting project for the future, and it sparks a bit of a dream.' Tadej Pogacar celebrated his fourth Tour de France title in Paris but was denied what would have been a stunning final stage victory as Wout van Aert rode away on the wet cobbles of Montmartre to win on the Champs-Elysees. Pogacar looked keen to take what could prove to be a unique opportunity to win in yellow in Paris as the introduction of three ascents of the climb to Montmartre reshaped the usual final day procession, but Van Aert broke clear on the last time up to take the glory. Although the general classification times had been neutralised in the soggy conditions, Pogacar still had to finish to secure his title yet was willing to risk it all on the greasy cobbles in pursuit of a fifth stage win of this Tour. The Slovenian attacked each time up the narrow climb to whittle down a leading group to just a handful of riders, but had no response when Van Aert made his move 400 metres from the summit of the final ascent, winning solo by 19 seconds from Davide Ballerini.
