Heavy rain batters Belagavi: schools shut, emergency teams deployed
Belagavi: In view of the incessant rainfall, District Disaster Management Authority chairman and deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshad extended a holiday for all Anganwadi centres, schools, and colleges (up to PUC II) on Thursday as a precautionary measure.

His order also applied to Khanapur and Kittur taluks.
The rains over the past three days has severely disrupted normal life in Belagavi city and surrounding areas. Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) deployed three emergency response teams to address crises and provide immediate relief to affected residents.
Belagavi city received 65mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, higher than the average, according to sources from Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.
Belagavi taluk recorded 58.8mm against the normal 7.3mm, while Peeranwadi village reported a massive 100mm of rainfall.
Widespread disruption in city
Rain-related challenges continued to mount in Belagavi city. Key areas such as Goaves, Fort Road and Congress Road reported waterlogging. Uprooted trees and fallen electric poles were reported across city zones, affecting vehicular movement and power supply.
Traffic near Central Post Office was blocked for hours after a tree collapsed on the road. BCC personnel later cleared the obstruction.
In Vishweshwaraiah Nagar, a lorry got stuck in an open gutter obscured by rainwater on Wednesday early morning, highlighting the danger posed by poor drainage visibility. Blocked drains and overflowing gutters compounded the crisis, with rainwater mixed with waste entering homes in low-lying areas.

BCC response and lapses
BCC commissioner Shuba B along with officials visited affected areas. The civic body stationed three JCB machines and water-sucking units on standby to respond to emergencies. Power outages became frequent as tree branches continued to fall on electric lines. Notably, the BCC and the forest department planned to trim hazardous branches before the onset of monsoon and even allocated Rs 10 lakh for the task.
However, delays in execution have now resulted in severe inconvenience to the public.
Taluk-wise rainfall
Among the taluks, Khanapur recorded the highest rainfall at 103mm in the past 24 hours (against the normal 16.4 mm), followed by Belagavi with 58.8mm, Kittur with 37.3mm, Nippani with 15.6mm and Bailhongal with 14.9mm. The lowest rainfall of 1.2mm was recorded in Ramdurg. Kalakatta bridge in Kangrali (KH) also reported flooding due to heavy downpours.

Delhi plans cloud-seeding trial in July, awaiting final clearance from DGCA
NEW DELHI: Delhi govt is likely to conduct a cloud seeding pilot project between July 4 and 11, when weather is expected to be feasible for causing artificial rain, city environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. He added that govt had received a report from IMD, which has been shared with DGCA along with a flight map for getting permission for the project. The govt has chalked out a tentative flight plan for the experiment, which includes Bawana, Rohini, Alipur, Kundli and Burari. The minister said IMD's reports and the flight map were approved in coordination with IIT Kanpur. The Delhi cabinet had on May 7 okayed a proposal to conduct five cloud-seeding trials, with a project outlay of Rs 3.21 crore. The trials were to be carried out in May-end and early June in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. "The met department told us that till July 3 conditions are not feasible for cloud seeding; however, the July 4-11 window is favourable. DGCA has sought a backup time window in case cloud-seeding turns unfeasible during July 4-11 due to weather changes," Sirsa said. "We believe that by Monday we'll see progress in getting approvals from DGCA," the minister said. IIT-Kanpur to conduct trials for artificial rain Cloud seeding is a weather-modification technique that introduces chemicals into the air to aggregate and condense moisture particles into rain. In this technique, compounds such as silver iodide (AgI) are released into the atmosphere to aid the formation of ice crystals that lead to rain. Soon after the formation of the BJP-led govt in Delhi, Sirsa announced that they would seek no-objection certificates from agencies concerned for conducting artificial rain in the winter season, when the capital records high pollution levels. Later, on June 18, the minister said govt had received all clearances barring that from the DGCA. For cloud seeding, clearances are needed from the Special Protection Group (SPG), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Union ministries of environment, defence and home, UP govt, IMD as well as DGCA, Airport Authority of India and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Trials for artificial rain will be executed by IIT Kanpur, which had earlier conducted the experiment using its own modified aircraft equipped with a mist sprinkler aiming to cover a minimum of 100sq km per sortie. The minister had earlier said IIT Kanpur's aircraft has the necessary permit from DGCA and can remain in the air for around five hours. Scientists from IIT Kanpur expect the sortie to take at least one hour and 30 minutes. The minister had also stated that after the trial, water samples will be collected to conduct a study to ensure see if there are harmful chemicals in it. He added that as per global studies and an earlier trial run by IIT Kanpur, the success rate is around 60-70%. As per IIT Kanpur, nimbostratus clouds are the most suitable type for seeding experiments. These are usually at heights of 500-6,000 meters above ground level. The previous AAP govt had repeatedly proposed conducting artificial rain during winters but shelved it citing unfavourable meteorological conditions. During the winter of 2024, the AAP govt had floated the plan again but later alleged that it was not getting enough support or backing from the Centre.

Monsoon havoc claims 34 lives, causes Rs 7,119 lakh loss in Himachal: State Disaster Management Authority
The monsoon season has claimed 34 lives and caused widespread destruction across Himachal Pradesh, with cumulative damages estimated at Rs 7,119.27 lakh as of June 28, according to a report released by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) of the Himachal Pradesh Revenue Department. "Between June 20 and June 28, 2025, a total of 34 human lives have been lost due to various rain-related incidents. Additionally, 74 individuals were injured, and 136 cases of animal deaths have been reported across the state," the SEOC said in its latest cumulative damage statement. The disaster management authority also confirmed that 38 houses have been fully damaged, and another 136 partially damaged during this period. Chamba, Bilaspur, Una, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and others also reported human casualties. Una and Solan districts reported the highest property losses among private structures. Himachal Monsoon Havoc: 17 Dead, Rs 300 Crore Loss In One Week Amid Flash Floods
Himachal Pradesh has witnessed early and intense monsoon activity this year, leading to flash floods, widespread infrastructural damage, and tragic loss of lives across several districts, Revenue, Horticulture, and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi said on Saturday. Speaking to ANI in Shimla, Negi confirmed that 17 people have lost their lives so far due to rain-related incidents across the state, with flash floods reported particularly in parts of Kullu and Dharamshala. "This time, the monsoon arrived very early. The flash floods, especially in Kullu and Dharamshala areas, have caused sudden devastation. Seventeen people have died across districts due to rain-related incidents," said the minister. Negi said the heavy downpour has severely disrupted road connectivity, electricity lines, and water supply schemes in several parts of the state. "In the last evening and this morning, around 37 roads were reported blocked, and nearly 47 distribution transformers (DTRs) were damaged, affecting the electricity supply. However, no National Highway is currently closed, and restoration work is actively underway," he said. He added that in some areas, small bridges have been washed away, further hampering local connectivity. "Initial estimates suggest that the damages caused by heavy rains in just one week have crossed Rs 300 crore," Negi informed. All departments, including the Public Works Department (PWD), are working around the clock to restore disrupted infrastructure. "Efforts to restore road access and power lines are ongoing, with priority being given to critical areas," he said. Negi also mentioned that mock drills and district-level preparedness exercises have been conducted in recent days to enhance disaster response capabilities. "All district officials have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure immediate relief to affected people during any eventuality," he added. "One person managed to save himself, while others were swept away. Search operations are currently underway to locate the missing persons. Teams have been deployed for rescue and recovery."The minister stated on the Dharamshala flash flood incident. The minister also urged tourists to remain cautious during the monsoon season. "People visiting the hills must take all necessary precautions while travelling, especially during this period of heavy rainfall. They should stay updated with local advisories and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas," Negi advised. As monsoon-related incidents continue to unfold, the Himachal Pradesh government remains on alert, closely monitoring the evolving situation and pushing for fast-track restoration efforts.
