Awards of Excellence winners honored by Pro Football Hall of Fame this week
Fifteen winners of Awards of Excellence in five categories are being honored in Canton, Ohio this week. The awards recognize contributions to the game by those in jobs that aren't usually given the spotlight.
This year's award-winners include former Steelers assistant coach Dick Hoak, former Rams and Bills assistant Elijah Pitts, and former Bengals assistant Jim McNally. In the athletic trainers category, the Hall will recognize Ed Block (Colts), Pepper Burruss (Jets, Packers), and John Norwig (Steelers).
Equipment managers Tom Gray (Bengals), Dennis Ryan (Vikings), and George Luongo (Patriots) will receive awards along with film/video directors Larry Clerico (Rams), Jon Dube (Ravens, Browns), and David Hack (Dolphins). Public relations directors Pete Abitante (NFL), Jason Jenkins (Dolphins), and Bill Keenist (Lions) round out the list of honorees.

3 reasons the NFL world wants to see Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt fail
On Thursday, All-Pro edge defender T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly agreed to terms on a new four-year contract that will make Watt the highest-paid non-quarterback in the history of the NFL. Steelers fans are elated to lock up Watt before the start of training camp and knowing he will be with the team through the 2028 season. But not everyone is so excited. Here are three reasons the rest of the NFL wants to see Watt fail. The whole DPOY thing In 2021, Watt was finally rewarded with his one and only Defensive Player of the Year Award. Then in 2023, Watt finished second to Cleveland Browns edge defender Myles Garrett. This caused some uproar based on comments Watt made and his skipping the awards ceremony. With Watt living rent-free in the heads of every Browns fan, that will be enough to put them on guard to put Watt's entire season under the microscope. 2024 didn't end well Like it or not, Watt ran out of gas late in the 2024 season. In fact, Watt failed to register a single stat in the team's final two games. This includes the regular season finale as well as the team's one playoff game. This amounts to 193 snaps without so much as a tackle. Not many players can do that and still become the richest defender in NFL history. Frankly, because of Steelers fans Let's be honest, the whole debate about T.J. Watt and where he ranks among the best defensive players in the league, including Garrett, makes the Steelers fanbase seem insufferable. Fans of opposing teams are drooling over the opportunity to take to social media and give the fanbase the business if Watt doesn't meet expectations with this new contract.

WWE star doesn't think Puka Nacua is a 'game-changing wide receiver'
The discourse around the best wide receivers in the NFL continued this week when ESPN released their top-10 rankings based on a survey from executives, coaches and scouts. Neither Puka Nacua nor Davante Adams were ranked inside the top-10 despite both playing like two of the best receivers in 2024. WWE star Seth Rollins agreed with Nacua's absence. While he guest-hosted the Rich Eisen Show, Rollins said that the Rams receiver isn't "a game-changing wide receiver" because he's more of a possession receiver who makes a lot of catches but doesn't break free often. 'I don't think Puka's gotta be in [the top-10]. He's not a game-changing wide receiver for me. Not yet," Rollins said. 'He's legit, but I don't know that he strikes fear into my heart.' Nacua may not be in the upper echelon of receivers in Rollins' mind, but his stats certainly are. The Rams' wideout has 184 receptions for 2,476 yards and nine touchdowns in just two years — and he missed six games in 2024. Those numbers rank eighth, seventh and 37th since 2023. So, if Nacua just ups his touchdowns he should easily clear the bar for being a top-10 guy. Nacua will once again have Matthew Stafford under center and Sean McVay calling plays, so that always helps. Oh yeah, and Davante Adams is now in town to take more defenders away from Nacua. This will be the year for Nacua to prove he can change games for the Rams.

Wisconsin legend J.J. Watt reacts to brother T.J.'s record contract extension
Wisconsin great T.J. Watt became the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history on Thursday. The standout edge rusher signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including a whopping $108 million fully guaranteed at signing. The contract extends his current deal, which was set to expire after the 2025 season. Its $41 million average annual value narrowly edges the contracts of Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase ($40.25 million) and Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett ($40 million). The former Badger star has become one of the best pass-rushers of this generation. He has 108 sacks, 126 tackles for loss and 225 quarterback hits in eight full years in the league. His best outputs include a 22.5-sack Defensive Player of the Year campaign in 2021 and a 19-sack 2023 season. While T.J. Watt prepares for his ninth NFL season and works to live up to his record deal, his brother J.J. took to social media to react to the news. According to Spotrac, J.J. Watt made $129,748,000 over his 12-year NFL career. T.J.'s three-year extension alone leaps over that number. The two brothers and former Wisconsin stars boast similarly terrific careers. J.J. made five All-Pro first teams and won three Defensive Player of the Year Awards. T.J., in four fewer seasons, has made four All-Pro first teams and won one DPOY Award. The duo is near the top of the list of the best brother duos in NFL history. If T.J. Watt keeps up his current pace, a spot in Canton, Ohio, will inevitably follow.
