Fox Sports Joel Klatt ranks Texas No. 2 behind Penn State in preseason rankings

USA Today2 hours ago
Fox Sports and lead analyst Joel Klatt will get a very good look at Texas in Week 1 of the college football season when the Longhorns travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Horseshoe. Klatt has released his preseason Top 25 rankings and the former Colorado quarterback ranks Texas at No. 2, ahead of Ohio State but behind Penn State.
If you've watched the Joel Klatt Show this summer, you know he's high on Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns.
"It's 'Arch Mania' folks. And I can't wait for it. I think Arch is going to be outstanding. He reminds me of the college version of Trevor Lawrence." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports
While Klatt is enthusiastic about Manning, he likes what surrounds the first-year starting QB on offense.
"You look at what's around Manning. (Ryan) Wingo, he could be a breakout star on the outside. They get CJ Baxter back. Remember him? He's excellent. The O line has some question marks, but again, like this is a program that is recruited really, really well." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports
But as much as he thinks Manning will thrive, it is the Longhorns defense that has Klatt really excited about UT's chances at the national title.
"I really think Texas has a chance to have the best defense in the country. Sark's known for offense. Everyone's going to talk about Arch, but the defense should be incredible. Really, really good. Did you know five of the last eight national champions have finished with the number one scoring defense in the country? Texas is going to have a chance to do that. They have a star at each level of that defense. Colin Simmons off the edge, Anthony Hill at linebacker, Michael Taff at safety. They hit the portal to address defensive tackle." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports
While Klatt can't make an official prediction for the game since he's the lead analyst on Aug. 30, but the fact he ranked the Horns ahead of the Buckeyes gives you an indication of he's true feelings.
"I'm going to give them the early nod at least right now. Uh not picking a winner, but like I give them the nod over Ohio State in that 3-2 battle because I think I trust Manning over kind of an unfounded quarterback situation, unsettled quarterback situation at Ohio State." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports
Klatt believes Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has build a program that could become the best program in the SEC for years to come.
"They've played in the national semifinal each of the last two years. Sark has built something that is sustainable. I believe that that's your SEC champion. I think that Texas in a lot of ways could steal the mantle from Georgia and win the SEC and become the preeminent program in that conference." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports
Still, the Fox Sports announcer has Texas No. 2 behind Penn State. Klatt thinks the Nittany Lions follow the pattern of the last couple national champs.
"I'm huge on I'm huge on blueprints, folks. You know this and in the last two years we have seen the blueprint that goes out there and wins the national championship. That is an experienced team with an experienced quarterback with a lot of guys that come back. They spurn the NFL. They come back. There's a chip on their shoulder. There's a tough loss in their rearview mirror and they go out there, they right write the ship and they get it done. That's Penn State." - Joel Klatt of Fox Sports

Joel Klatt: Mario Cristobal must lead Miami to College Football Playoff in 2025

Joel Klatt claimed that has to lead Miami to the College Football Playoff this season after coming up short last year. The Hurricanes seemed destined to get there last year until a late season collapse. As far as what they can do in 2025, the talent is there on both sides of the football. Cristobal's accumulation of talent through recruiting and the portal has to pay off at some point, per Klatt. So with new quarterback under center, Miami has a reliable option, so long as he stays healthy. They can lean on other stars on offense as well. 'I'm bullish on Miami,' Klatt said. 'I get it. Carson Beck, the injury stuff is not great. Elbow injury has made me nervous all off season. But I can't get away from the fact that it's like you can't recruit at that level, be in the portal at that level, bring in these level of players for this long and not be better. Here's the bottom line. Miami finished 10-3 last year after that 9-0 and they lost that bad game up at Syracuse, in which, if they win it, they're going to go to the playoff and play for the ACC championship. 'Mario Cristoball has got to get over that hump. Got to get over that hump. Miami has got to go to the college football playoff. They can lean on the line of scrimmage and the run game, so Beck, I don't think, is going to have to be a savior for them at quarterback, particularly early on in the season.' The X-factor for Cristobal and Miami could be the changes on defense. The team hired former Minnesota DC to take over the unit and it could pay dividends. 'The defense kept Miami out of the playoff last year, so they brought in a new defensive coordinator, Corey Hetherman,' Klatt said. 'He comes in from Minnesota. Heatherman is a really good coach … If he can bring that level of what I would say is continuity and soundness to their defense, and they should be good. They hit the portal hard to fix the secondary. 'In particular, they do have a potential star in Rueben Bain off the edge. I think he's phenomenal. He was banged up a little bit last year but if he's healthy, he's going to be really good. So, Miami at 12 (in my top 25) and I think they make a strong CFP push.'

'Most impressive athletic feat ever': 16-year-old Texan sets world record in 800 meters

Ridgemont High, give way to a suburban school near Fort Worth. That's where the fast times will be this year. Cooper Lutkenhaus, an incoming junior at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas, was so impressive in setting an age-group world record at the U.S. Track & Field Championships on Sunday that a respected distance running coach and author declared it was "the most impressive athletic feat in history." In a social media post, Steve Magness, who wrote "The Science of Running," said Lutkenhaus' performance that included passing three of the nation's fastest men in an electrifying stretch run "makes high school LeBron look like nobody. "Cooper Lutkenhaus, take a bow." Current Lakers star LeBron James, of course, was a prodigy on the basketball court at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, and went straight to the NBA upon graduating in 2003. Lutkenhaus, 16, won't be in school for long, either. He will become the youngest American to compete in the World Athletics Championships when he travels to Tokyo on Sept. 13-21. This time he'll have no age-group restriction, not after posting the fourth-best time in U.S. history (1:42.27) and nearly catching 800-meter champion Donavan Brazier (1:42.16). In the waning seconds, Lutkenhaus turned on the jets, going from seventh to second place while passing reigning indoor 800 meter world champion Josh Hoey as well as Olympians Brandon Miller and Bryce Hoppel, all of whom were clustered with Brazier at the front. Lutkenhaus' time was the fastest ever for a runner under 18. "I saw someone coming up and I was like, 'Dang, this could be the high schooler,' " Brazier told reporters. "This kid's phenomenal. I'm glad that I'm 28 and maybe have a few more years left in me, hopefully won't have to deal with him in his prime because that dude is definitely special." Does wunderkind describe Lutkenhaus? He's only been running track for three years, and he said his strategy of accelerating over the last quarter of the race was crafted in middle school. "I've always kind of had a natural spot with 200 [meters] to go," Lutkenhaus told reporters. "Ever since middle school that's kind of been the spot I've really pushed from. Kind of just decided to go back to middle school tactics with 200 to go and really just give everything I had left." Lyles might have challenged his personal best American record of 19.31, but as he passed Bednarek with five meters remaining he turned his head and stared down his competitor. Bednarek retaliated, giving Lyles a shove before they shook hands. Afterward, Bednarek shrugged and chalked up the incident to "Noah is gonna be Noah." "If he wants to stare me down, that's fine,' Bednarek said. 'I'm very confident I can beat him. What he said doesn't matter. It's just what he did. It's unsportsmanlike [crap] and I don't deal with that.' More drama occurred before championships when Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence a week ago at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to a police report. The reigning 100-meter world champion was charged with assaulting her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman, as the couple were going through security. A police officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away, the report said. Read more: 2 dead, 6 wounded in mass shooting in downtown L.A. after music festival Coleman tried to step around Richardson and she pushed him into a wall. Later she appeared to throw headphones at him. In the report, however, the officer indicated that Colemen "did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim.' Coleman defended Richardson when asked about the incident at the championships. 'She just has a lot of things going on, a lot of emotions and forces going on inside of her that not only I can't understand, but nobody can," he said. "Because she's one of one.… I know that it's been a tough journey for her this year. But she's going to bounce back. "Like I said, I see it every day. She's the best female athlete in the world, and she's going to be just fine. She's going to be good. I'm going to be good, too.' Once the racing took place, attention turned to Lutkenhaus. His time bettered the the U18 world record — set by Timothy Kitum of Kenya at the 2012 London Olympics — by 1.1 seconds. "It is the most mind blowing HS performance in history," Magness wrote on X. "Any high school phenom in history you can think of? This kid is better. I never thought we'd supplant Jim Ryun as the HS runner GOAT, but a sophomore in HS just did." Joel Klatt calls Iowa football 'underrated' in top 25, makes bold schedule prediction

Thoughts on @joelklatt's Preseason Top 25? College football is nearing. The air is crisp in the mornings, the pads are popping, and fans are eagerly awaiting kickoff. As that approaches, preseason rankings come rolling out in bunches. In the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Iowa Hawkeyes were on the outside looking in, although they did receive some votes. If they can rattle off a few early-season wins, their spot in that poll will be quickly earned. Another poll, this one from Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt, gives the Hawkeyes some more respect. He has the Hawkeyes inside his top 25 entering the season, placing them at No. 22 in the country. Klatt elaborated on the Hawkeyes during his show. "So, what do I trust about 22? Defense. Iowa. Give me Iowa at 22. You're trying to find these teams at the back-end of the top 25. These are the eight-nine-win teams during the course of the year. Do we think that Iowa can do that? Yeah. Do we think that they can do more? Yeah, probably, this might even be a bit underrated of the Iowa Hawkeyes," Klatt said. "Here's what I'm most excited about for Iowa. It's not just that it's Kirk Ferentz or Phil Parker, the defensive coordinator, and that defense and the consistency of what they bring in. It's this new quarterback they've got, Mark Gronowski," said Klatt. "Mark Gronowski is a guy that I think could turn them around. This guy might be a little different. Mark Gronowski transfers in from South Dakota State, which has been one of the premier FCS programs around. He won the FCS Heisman back in 2023. He's won two, not one, but two national championships at that level, and he's started 55 games. This is the type of guy who can pop. Experience over talent," Klatt said about Mark Gronowski. Klatt, very high on Iowa, believes that the Cy-Hawk game against Iowa State in Week 2, which he will be announcing, could be a measuring stick for both teams, who are among his top 25. His belief in Iowa did not end at the quarterback position. Joel Klatt went on to predict a bold upset win for Iowa against one of the two premier Big Ten opponents that will enter Kinnick Stadium this fall. "Their two toughest games are against Oregon and Penn State. Both of those games are at home in Kinnick. What do we know about Kinnick? This is where top 10 teams go to die. Someone is going to lose in Kinnick. I think Oregon or Penn State is going to get beat by Iowa," Klatt ended with.
