2025 WJ McKell Cup: Jeff Penza rides Je Zous for Chris Waller

Prolific hoop Jeff Penza and champion trainer Chris Waller will be out to orchestrate another feature race heist with promising import Je Zous in Saturday's Listed WJ McKell Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Waller has called upon one of his most reliable sources to pilot several of his key chances on home turf, including his lightly-raced new addition, with many of Sydney's big guns either on holidays or riding on Group 1 Tatt's Tiara day at Eagle Farm.
Penza and Waller have made for a formidable combination for many years with the hoop riding 80 winners for the champion conditioner – the second-most of any trainer he has ridden for.

It was only recently when the dynamic duo combined for a shock stakes win in May when $61 outsider Summer Flame scored an upset win in the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes at Scone.
'We've had a terrific run together,' Penza said.
'It's always a pleasure riding his horses.
'They are always extremely well trained and tractable.
'Chris at Rosehill is always going to have plenty of runners and he always looks after me on provincial Saturdays.'
• 'We have to focus on the positive things about our sport': O'Shea's rallying cry
Je Zous is only in her first preparation in Australia after racing with success in Europe, winning at Group 3 level in the Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes at Gowran Park last year.
The Waller stable has indicated Je Zous could be a potential Caulfield Cup hopeful and the Zoustar mare could take a significant step in that direction in the McKell Cup for which she is rated a $26 chance.
'She looks to have some really nice form overseas,' Penza said.
'She is only having her second run in Australia obviously and is second up there on Saturday.
'It was short of her best the other day (1400m) so the step up to 2000m should suit her.
'It sounds like she is a horse they have some time for.'
• Revealed: Controversy behind Winx, Black Caviar 'Legend' gong
Penza has six rides in total for Waller across the card.
A rider of more than 2300 winners, the talented hoop is closing the half century mark for this season and has a strong book at Moruya to prepare for Saturday's card.
The 55-year-old is enjoying life in the saddle as much as ever.
'My body is feeling really good,' Penza said.
'If you don't enjoy it, you won't do it very well but I am enjoying it. I am very happy.
'I had a bit of a lean trot there for a while but it comes and goes and I think the last month or two months have been really good.
'Hopefully I can continue that into next season and have a good season again.'
Penza will be in line to chase a Cup double on Saturday's program with the experienced hoop set to connect with Speycaster ($6.50) in the Irresistible Pools Benchmark 90 Stayer's Cup (2400m).
• Rosehill Turf Talk for Saturday: $19 value bet
Speycaster's last win came in the same race last year after finishing seventh in the Listed Winter Cup the previous start. He was fourth in the same lead-up this year.
'Speycaster put in an improved performance last start and the 2400m should suit him,' Penza said.
'He did win this race last year.'
Penza also combines with Maori Chief (race 3), Changing Colours (race 4), Vanessi (race 5) and Lenapi Vibe (race 8).
Bookies rate Changing Colours ($4.80) as the best of those chances, with the daughter of The Autumn Sun set to return to Sydney after a run of three straight close seconds in Melbourne, the most recent behind Suances at Sandown.
• Shayne O'Cass's race-by-race tips, analysis for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday
'Changing Colours has had those three seconds in a row down in Melbourne so she is knocking on the door,' Penza said.
'I don't know her too well given she has been racing in Melbourne but her form is very consistent so hopefully she can step up in Sydney.'
Maori Chief ($14) can reap the benefits of an inside draw in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m) while Vanessi ($15) is second-up in the TAB Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m).
Lenape Vibe ($41) is an outside chance in Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m).

Panthers players spotted at Sydney Pro-Palestine protest

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Penrith Panthers players Mitch Kenny and Izack Tago attended the Pro-Palestine march in Sydney on Sunday, a day after playing in an NRL victory. Tens of thousands of protesters marched across Sydney's Harbour Bridge in a massive demonstration that far exceeded the expected turn-out. About 90,000 people, including famous faces, braved the rain and descended on the iconic landmark with placards and flags in hand to call for an end to the war in Gaza after the Supreme Court rejected a last-minute application to block the protest on Saturday. Panthers hooker Kenny and centre Tago both played in Penrith's 30-26 win over the Gold Coast Titans at CBUS Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on Saturday. The premiership-winning duo spent their Sunday at the rally in Sydney, organised by the Palestine Action Group, which was largely well-behaved despite police intervention over fears of a crowd rush. Tago and Kenny were spotted in the thick of things in the march and were happy to pose for photos with fans and give them a wave. Kenny wore a shirt that read 'Free Palestine', while Tago held a Palestine flag and wore a Palestine scarf around his head. As the march made its way across the city, Tago was spotted climbing part of the Sydney Harbour Bridge's steel structure. The Panthers declined to comment when contacted by Izack Tago (left) climbs the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Photo: Supplied. Tago (above) climbed up the Harbour Bridge. Photo: Supplied. The march was endorsed by hundreds of organisations and individuals, most notably: Amnesty International Australia, NSW Greens, Jewish Council of Australia, Arab Council Australia, Julian Assange, Bob Carr, Craig Foster and NSW Nurses and Midwives Association. In Sydney, thousands of protesters started crossing the bridge about 2pm on Sunday, chanting 'free, free Palestine' and waving placards. Some could also be heard chanting 'death, death to the IDF', a reference to the Israeli Defence Force. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore lent her support to the protesters saying: 'Discomfort from traffic can't be compared to what's happening in Gaza'. Jewish Council of Australia Executive Officer Sarah Schwartz backed the protest saying the marchers were 'crying out for moral leadership'. 'It is a time for all of us, including those in positions of power, to do everything they can to halt an active genocide and stand with the people of Gaza.' Pro Palestine protesters march towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Picture: NewsWire / Damian Shaw 'Almost catastrophic': Fears of crowd crush At about 3pm, NSW Police issued an urgent request for protesters to stop marching on safety fears, citing a possible 'crush' at the northern end of the bridge. 'Participants have been asked to stop proceeding across the bridge to avoid a crowd crush at the northern end of the harbour bridge,' the police said in what they called a 'protest safety intervention'. 'Once the procession has come to a halt, protesters will be asked to turn around and walk back toward Wynyard to avoid a risk of injury due to the huge number of people taking part. 'Police believe the safest route back is to walk back across the bridge given the huge numbers to avoid overwhelming the public transport system and a potential crowd crush scenario.' The crowd started dispersing from the bridge about 3.30pm and traffic started crossing the bridge about 4.30pm. People, including Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and Craig Foster, march across the Harbour Bridge during a pro-Palestinian rally. (Photo by Lisa) Penrith cop mega punishment for trainer act Penrith's win over the Titans kept their dream of winning a fifth consecutive NRL premiership alive, with the victory putting them just one point behind the fourth placed Warriors on the ladder. The Panthers were fined $50,000 and trainer Corey Bocking banned for five matches after he interfered with a Titans conversion attempt on the weekend. The NRL confirmed the stunning penalty on Monday which came as a result of 'previous breaches by Penrith Panthers trainers'. Bocking who ran directly across the path of Titans kicker Jayden Campbell, who was attempting a conversion in last weekend' match. Campbell had to furiously compose himself and ultimately missed the conversion before Nathan Cleary sent the game into extra time with a long-range field goal. The Panthers won the match thanks to a Blaize Talagi golden point try which cost the Titans two crucial points in their bid to avoid the wooden spoon. NEXT BEST Race 4 No.2: HELLINDA Raced 19 times, won twice, runner-up seven times. Beat a good field when won here. VALUE BET Race 2 No.5: BRUME DE SOLIEL Could be ready to deliver third-up. QUADDIE Race 4: 2, 5 Race 5: 2, 5, 12 Race 6: 7 Race 7: 1, 4, 5 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Quayde Krogh has a red-hot chance of winning the TAB Jockeys Challenge. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ MORUYA INSIDE MAIL RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE (1020m) PERFORMING DIVA (7) has a globally recognisable pedigree, her fourth dam is the mother of Storm Cat while her fifth dam foaled down Royal Academy. Trainer Pat Murphy scratched Performing Diva from Forbes on Sunday and Wagga on Monday to run here and for good reason. AZZUCCA (4) has finished runner-up twice in six starts to date. In a good stable, Jeff Penza on, and has done enough in better races than this one. EAGERLY AWAITS (9) is very hard to line up with two starts, two seconds, one at Morphettville Parks and at Murray Bridge. BET: PERFORMING DIVA to win. RACE 2: MAIDEN HANDICAP (1310m) BRUME DE SOLIEL (5) is '8x77' leading into this but the two runs this preparation, she was beaten 'only' 4½ then six lengths but keep in mind that she was in a field of 14 last time and closed off rather well. This is not an especially deep race. SHOREMAN (9) who races in the colours of the Northern Suburbs Shute Shield team, is yet to score in his six starts but he's pretty nippy and could be hard to catch from box one in this line-up. ICONIQUE (1) was $101 first run for Nick Olive on July 21 and ran a career-best third. Might have turned a corner? BET: BRUME DE SOLIEL each-way, box trifecta 1, 3, 5, 9. RACE 3: CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1020m) LAGUNA SECA (3) is by Sebring, both horses are named after motor-racing tracks in California and Florida respectively. Laguna Seca is a locally-trained gelding who has three thirds from four Moruya starts. While all of his best form is on good tracks, it wouldn't be right to say he is a duffer. Tom Wilson has had GIZA (5) flying since he bought her off Godolphin. She has won twice and placed twice in nine runs including a really impressive one here last start. COMMANDORO (10) has some fabulous numbers here at home. BET: LAGUNA SECA to win. RACE 4: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1210m) HELLINDA (2) has finished first or second at nine of his 19 starts; that said only two of them are wins so he has been quite costly for punters. That said, he is a lot more consistent and competitive than most. What really makes him almost impossible to go past here is that he won over this track and trip three runs back beating Winning Emotions (goes well!). BLUE BAYOU (5) was $18 into $13 and almost landed the plunge when a close and closing second to Deni Girl in a 1210m Benchmark 58 here on July 21. Reliable type. SNAPPY JIM (1) excels on Heavy tracks. BET: HELLINDA to win, quinella 2, 5. RACE 5: COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1435m) SAWMILL (12) is a Gerry Harvey-bred son of All Too Hard out of Testa Rossa mare with broodmare sires including Secretariat, Nasrullah and Man O' War. Apart from being rather well bred, Sawmill is rather handy too, certainly by maiden standards, given she has placed in all five starts to date and in some uncommonly strong maidens too. BRANNUM (2) likewise has placed at every start he's had so far, that's two seconds and a third. Big run here first-up, not sure about the draw though. FEEDBACK (5) is another Gerry Harvey-bred participant; only he kept this one. BET: SAWMILL to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 12, 2nd Leg 1. RACE 6: COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1435m) VERMICELLA (7) is owned and bred by that man again, Gerry Harvey! The Joe Cleary-trained mare will be off to Baramul to join the broodmare band next spring rather than this one you'd think. By the by, she is a daughter of Pierro is from one of Harvey's best families – St Kate. Cleary has ensured that she will retire with a handy little record of (as it stands today) three wins and three seconds from eight starts. Run twice at Moruya and KO'ed Stallone at the first one. Let's stay with the 'Rocky' theme for a minute given the presence of EPAULLO CREED (2) (close enough!). In fine form. BET: VERMICELLA to win, box trifecta 2, 3, 4, 7. RACE 7: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1660m) PERUNO (1) was bred by guess who? Gerry Harvey. A son of the aforementioned Pierro, this gelding is a descendant of Denise's Joy. Though born and raised at Baramul in the Widden Valley, Peruno is very much a Moruya local having raced there 19 times for three wins, three second and five thirds. On top of that, he has a win and a second from three runs at the track/trip. One for one on heavy too. BEAUER (5) paid for himself in the trip away to Grafton with back-to-back placings. Go well here. EASEMENT (4) and SOUL TAKER (6) have claims. BET: PERUNO each-way. Horse Racing The dynamic duo of trainer Joe Cleary and Gerry Harvey can add to their extraordinary tally of shared winners in back-to-back races at Moruya Horse Racing Champion mare Via Sistina will lead an all-star cast of horses at Thursday's delayed barrier trials as the full list of finalists for the Australian Racehorse of the Year awards were announced.
