Implement federal-funded projects in Sabah according to schedule - Ewon

Borneo Post03-06-2025
Ewon speaks to media members at the event.
KOTA BELUD (June 3): Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick stated that all development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be carried out according to the schedule set.
Ewon, who also serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey
Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated.
'Datuk Shahelmey and I are responsible for monitoring and proposing solutions to any issues causing delays in the commencement of these projects.
'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Meeting,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall here yesterday.
Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee.
He said the implementation of the Special Intervention Meetings, initiated earlier this year, had shown positive results.
'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries, and the State Government,' he said.
Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects.
Ewon described this decrease as a positive development resulting from the cooperation of various parties.
'We have proposed several measures to technical departments and the ministries responsible for the projects so that any outstanding issues can be discussed and resolved.
'I hope the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to rise in the upcoming meetings,' he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to all ministries, the Sabah Government and technical departments that have succeeded in expediting procurement processes, contractor appointments, and tenders for projects that had not yet begun.
'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all those involved in this intervention committee,' he said.

Melaka forms special task force to tackle traffic congestion

MELAKA: The state has formed a special task force to tackle traffic congestion and improve driving experience, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. The Melaka Chief Minister said the task force brings together technical experts and enforcement agencies to coordinate traffic management strategies and address bottlenecking at key locations. "This move reflects our commitment to addressing public concerns about congestion and to efficiently serve the people," he said after launching a new 3km link road connecting Serkam and Bemban in Jasin here on Thursday (July 3). Ab Rauf also announced that the Federal Government had given the green light to nine major road projects and upgrades, now at various stages of implementation. Among the projects, he said, are the RM300mil upgrade of Jalan Tun Hamzah from the JPJ junction to Semabok, scheduled to begin in December 2025; an RM181mil elevated and direct U-turn linking Pulau Gadong to Taman Cheng; a new RM125mil road from Kuala Linggi to Ayer Molek in Masjid Tanah, set to commence in March 2026 and a RM35.2mil road from the Rim junction to Kampung Ulu Jasin, slated for completion by August 2025. On the Serkam-Bemban link, Ab Rauf said that the dual-lane road was proposed in 2021 and completed ahead of schedule. "This link not only shortens the journey, it boosts accessibility, supports economic activity and enhances the well-being of communities," he said.

No shielding policy for civil servants

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Rosli, Hashim and invited guests in a group photo with participants at SICC. Kota Kinabalu: Integrity must remain a core principle in the civil service to maintain public trust in government institutions, said Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa. He said the Federal Government spends over RM17 billion annually on salaries for federal civil servants in Sabah alone. 'That figure alone reflects the scale and importance of the civil service. With it comes the duty to carry out responsibilities with honesty and full accountability,' he said when officiating the Seminar on Integrity Governance: The Core of Public Service at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here on Wednesday. He also noted that Sabah has over 126,000 civil servants across federal and state levels, with more than 27,000 serving under the State Government. 'With such a large public sector workforce, it is crucial that integrity is upheld at all levels to ensure the system functions efficiently and public trust is maintained,' he said. Rosli said integrity goes beyond avoiding corruption, and includes upholding values and moral strength, especially when faced with internal and external pressures. He stressed that civil servants must not be protected from investigation if misconduct occurs. 'If an offence has been committed, the authorities must be allowed to take appropriate action. Our role is to foster a culture of ethics and responsibility,' he said. He also cautioned against assuming that isolated cases reflect the conduct of the entire civil service, saying such assumptions risk demoralising those who remain committed to doing their jobs well. The seminar was jointly organised by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) and Intan Sabah Regional Campus, drawing over 800 participants from Federal and State agencies. Sedia Chief Executive Datuk Seri Hashim Paijan said the programme aimed to strengthen awareness of governance and integrity among public officers. 'We've implemented our own Organisational Anti-Corruption Plan at Sedia. Seminars like this reinforce our commitment to transparency and ethical conduct in all government operations,' he said. Also present were Sabah MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy, Deputy Director of State Audit Khairul Anuar Amat Johari, heads of departments and invited panel speakers. The event also featured a session by a former offender convicted of corruption, who shared his personal experience as a lesson on the consequences of unethical behaviour. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
