KUCHING (June 6): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has welcomed the federal government's decision to revise regulations on the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, calling it as a people-centric move that reflects the core values of the Madani administration.
Dr Yii expressed full support for the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living's (KPDN) policy update, which now allows all small-scale food operators, particularly hawkers, to continue using subsidised gas without needing a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB), provided usage does not exceed three 14kg cylinders (42kg) at any one time.
'The government's openness in handling this matter – by quickly engaging with feedback from grassroots hawkers, trade associations, and MPs from both sides of the aisle – ultimately led to a fair and rational policy revision.
'This inclusive and transparent style of governance once again affirms that Madani is not merely a slogan but a real, people-centred philosophy of governance,' he said in a statement.
The revision comes in response to public concern over enforcement actions based on 2021 regulations introduced under the previous Perikatan Nasional administration, which restricted the use of subsidised LPG in efforts to curb abuse.
Dr Yii noted that the enforcement had caused confusion and anxiety among small food vendors operating legitimate businesses.
He also thanked Transport Minister and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke for raising the issue in Cabinet, saying his proactive stance helped bring about the timely policy shift.
Dr Yii emphasised that many hawkers rely heavily on subsidised LPG as a basic necessity for daily operations.
'Forcing them to switch to commercial-priced gas would have driven up operational costs and food prices, ultimately burdening consumers and affecting the broader economy,' he said.
While commending the decision, he urged the government to strengthen enforcement to prevent misuse.
'A transparent and efficient distribution system, combined with strict enforcement, is crucial to ensuring the long-term effectiveness of this people-oriented policy,' he added.
Dr Yii concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting all initiatives that benefit the grassroots and contribute to the national economy stability, working alongside the government to build a more equitable, inclusive and progressive society. Kelvin Yii kpdn LPG Policy subsidy

India and Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners

NEW DELHI: (Bernama) India and Pakistan on Tuesday (July 1) exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody. Pakistan handed over a list of 246 Indian or believed-to-be-Indian prisoners, including 193 fishermen, to an Indian diplomatic representative in Islamabad and India gave a list of 463 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners, including 81 fishermen, to a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi. The two countries exchange such lists on the first day of January and July as per a 2008 bilateral agreement on consular access to prisoners. India has called for an early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, fishermen along with their boats, and missing Indian defence personnel from Pakistan's custody, according to an Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Pakistan has similarly sought an immediate release and repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners and fishermen who have completed their sentence and whose national status is confirmed, its Foreign Ministry said. - Bernama

Asean secretary-general urges stronger cruise tourism ties with India

JAKARTA: (Bernama) Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn has outlined actions to be taken under the Asean-India Tourism Work Plan 2023-2027 to advance cruise tourism cooperation between the two regions. Speaking virtually from Jakarta during the Asean-India Cruise Dialogue 2025 held in Chennai on Monday (June 30), he said the initiative provides a timely platform to deepen maritime tourism and strengthen regional connectivity. "The Cruise Dialogue offers a strategic platform to translate our shared aspirations into action. By working together, we can develop initiatives that link heritage, culture, and communities across our coastal regions,' he said in a video message released by the Asean Secretariat. Kao outlined several priorities under the work plan, including the development of integrated cruise circuits, enhancement of port infrastructure with digital systems, and promotion of joint investments in cruise-related services. He emphasised capacity-building in cruise operations and hospitality, especially targeting youth and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and called for stronger coordination through the Asean Task Force on Tourism and Transport. Sustainability was also a key theme, with calls to protect marine ecosystems, improve climate resilience, and harness digital platforms to enhance passenger experiences and operational coordination. "These areas of cooperation reflect the potential for Asean and India to lead in sustainable and inclusive cruise tourism,' Kao said, noting India's US$5 million contribution to the Asean-India Fund as a vital support mechanism. With over 40 cruise destinations in Asean and major port upgrades underway, he said the sector is emerging as a strategic growth area. The dialogue was held as part of the Asean-India Year of Tourism aimed at strengthening tourism ties between the two regions. Travel between Asean and India has been growing, with about 5.88 million Indian tourists visiting Asean last year and 660,000 visitors from Asean countries travelling to India, Kao added. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested the Malaysian Embassy in Italy to immediately assist Dalila Zaidi, a Malaysian citizen stranded in Milan after her passport was stolen. He said the Foreign Ministry has also been alerted to ensure appropriate action is taken to resolve the matter. Anwar was responding to a post by Dalila on X, in which she appealed for help after losing her passport. "Salam PMX @anwaribrahim, my name is Dalila Zaidi and I'm a Malaysian currently stranded in Milan after my passport was stolen in the afternoon yesterday, 30 June 2025 near Santa Sofia station...I truly appreciate your attention to this," she wrote. In her post, Dalila claimed she had attempted to obtain an Emergency Travel Document from the Malaysian Embassy in Rome, but was informed that it was not possible due to the absence of an authorised officer to sign the necessary documents. The Prime Minister will be in Italy for a three-day official visit from July 1 to 3, at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. - BERNAMA
