‘This grief must not be in vain': Bandar Kuching MP urges campus security overhaul after student's death in Cyberjaya

KUCHING, June 26 — The tragic death of a female tertiary student from Kuching in her Cyberjaya dormitory must be investigated immediately, thoroughly, and transparently, said Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii. The Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker said the suspected murder case must lead to changes in safety protocols. 'This incident must serve as a wake-up call to both educational institutions and authorities responsible for student welfare,' he said in a statement today. Yii urged the Ministry of Higher Education to review and strengthen existing safety protocols and work closely with all educational institutions to enhance security measures for student accommodations nationwide. 'For years, there were repeated warnings regarding the lack of proper security systems for the students, from broken CCTVs to dark walkways, which were all ignored and not addressed. 'The heinous crime that followed paints the outcome of a failed system to protect the safety of the students, which should have always been the priority of any educational institution,' he stated. Yii called on educational institutions and hostel managements to take proactive steps to ensure all students are provided with a safe living environment, including secure dorm access, functioning CCTV systems, emergency reporting systems, and close coordination with local police. He emphasised that campus safety cannot be treated as an afterthought or a box-ticking exercise, adding the safety of students must be embedded as a core institutional responsibility. 'Prevention must take priority, necessary improvements must be made without waiting for another tragedy to occur,' he said. He stressed the full weight of the law must be applied without delay, and those responsible held fully accountable, adding the public deserve to know the truth, and most importantly, the deceased's family deserves justice and closure. No family should have to endure such devastating loss, especially under such horrifying and suspicious circumstances, he said. 'Beyond justice for this young girl, this grief that we are witnessing now must not be in vain. We must ensure that this loss leads to real, systemic change, so that no other student and no other family have to go through what this bright young woman and her loved ones are experiencing,' he said. Yii called for a clear signal to be sent that such heinous acts will not be tolerated and justice must be delivered swiftly and fairly. 'May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find strength in this time of unimaginable grief.' — The Borneo Post

MP calls for stronger safety protocols after student murder in Cyberjaya

KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has urged the Higher Education Ministry to review and strengthen existing safety protocols to enhance security measures at student accommodations nationwide. Bandar Kuching member of parliament Dr Kelvin Yii, in a statement today, said the incident involving a female student who was murdered in her dormitory room in Cyberjaya has raised serious concerns about student safety, particularly for those living far from home. "I urge the ministry to review and strengthen existing safety protocols and work closely with all educational institutions to enhance their security measures at student accommodations nationwide. "This incident must serve as a wake-up call to both educational institutions and authorities responsible for student welfare. "Police and all relevant authorities must conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the tragic death of the student from Kuching," he said. He said educational institutions and hostel management must also take proactive steps to ensure that all students are provided with a safe living environment, including secure dorm access, functioning CCTV, emergency reporting systems, and close coordination with local police. "The heinous crime that followed paints the outcome of a failed system to protect the safety of the students, which should have always been the priority of any educational institution. "Campus safety cannot be treated as an afterthought or a box-ticking exercise. "The safety of students must be embedded as a core institutional responsibility. Seize free training opportunities via NTW 2025, Kuching MP urges S'wak youth

According to Yii, NTW 2025 is organised by HRD Corp in conjunction with the Asean Year of Skills, under the theme 'Learning Beyond Borders.' KUCHING (June 19): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has called on young Sarawakians to actively take part in National Training Week (NTW) 2025, describing it as a valuable opportunity to equip themselves with future-ready skills for the digital economy. He noted that NTW 2025, recently launched by the Ministry of Human Resources at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, is free of charge and open to all Malaysians. 'The opportunities provided through this platform are highly relevant to the needs of our people, particularly in areas such as digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI); entrepreneurship and financial planning; Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and technical skills; creativity, arts and innovation; as well as life skills and mental wellness,' he said in a statement. 'NTW 2025 provides a unique opportunity to gain practical, career-relevant knowledge through physical workshops, live online sessions, self-paced e-learning, and coaching programmes.' According to Yii, NTW 2025 is organised by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) in conjunction with the Asean Year of Skills, under the theme 'Learning Beyond Borders.' 'This nationwide and regional initiative offers over 65,000 free training courses and 1,000 high-impact learning and development activities – all of which are accessible to all Malaysians and citizens across Asean,' he said. 'To date, NTW 2025 has recorded more than two million participants, surpassing its initial national target of one million. Of these, 40 per cent are enrolled in courses related to Industry 4.0, highlighting our nation's readiness to embrace future skills.' Yii, who is also political secretary to the Human Resources Minister, added that one of the standout features of this year's NTW is the 'AI-4-Educators' programme, which is launched in partnership with the Ministry of Education. 'The programme has successfully trained over 395,000 educators from across the country between April 7 and June 12 this year, earning recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest AI training participation among educators. 'This initiative reflects a bold step towards building a digitally literate and future-ready generation,' he said. Further information on NTW can be found at its website

Bandar Kuching MP welcomes people-centric move on LPG subsidy policy revision

Dr Yii noted that the enforcement had caused confusion and anxiety among small food vendors operating legitimate businesses. – Bernama photo KUCHING (June 6): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has welcomed the federal government's decision to revise regulations on the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, calling it as a people-centric move that reflects the core values of the Madani administration. Dr Yii expressed full support for the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living's (KPDN) policy update, which now allows all small-scale food operators, particularly hawkers, to continue using subsidised gas without needing a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB), provided usage does not exceed three 14kg cylinders (42kg) at any one time. 'The government's openness in handling this matter – by quickly engaging with feedback from grassroots hawkers, trade associations, and MPs from both sides of the aisle – ultimately led to a fair and rational policy revision. 'This inclusive and transparent style of governance once again affirms that Madani is not merely a slogan but a real, people-centred philosophy of governance,' he said in a statement. The revision comes in response to public concern over enforcement actions based on 2021 regulations introduced under the previous Perikatan Nasional administration, which restricted the use of subsidised LPG in efforts to curb abuse. Dr Yii noted that the enforcement had caused confusion and anxiety among small food vendors operating legitimate businesses. He also thanked Transport Minister and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke for raising the issue in Cabinet, saying his proactive stance helped bring about the timely policy shift. Dr Yii emphasised that many hawkers rely heavily on subsidised LPG as a basic necessity for daily operations. 'Forcing them to switch to commercial-priced gas would have driven up operational costs and food prices, ultimately burdening consumers and affecting the broader economy,' he said. While commending the decision, he urged the government to strengthen enforcement to prevent misuse. 'A transparent and efficient distribution system, combined with strict enforcement, is crucial to ensuring the long-term effectiveness of this people-oriented policy,' he added. Dr Yii concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting all initiatives that benefit the grassroots and contribute to the national economy stability, working alongside the government to build a more equitable, inclusive and progressive society.
