Sinners' takes over US theatres on Easter
The first original film from Ryan Coogler – director of Oscar-nominated Black Panther – has Michael B Jordan playing twins who encounter a sinister force as they return home to Jim Crow-era Mississippi. Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo also star in the music-driven thriller.
Riding on "near-perfect reviews," according to the Hollywood Reporter, Sinners outperformed another Warner Bros blockbuster, A Minecraft Movie, which kept up its solid run with $41.3 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported.
Minecraft, co-produced by Legendary Pictures, has recorded $344.6 million in domestic ticket sales and $376.2 million internationally for a total haul of $720.8 million in just three weeks out. Analysts say it could be the year's first billion-dollar blockbuster.
Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, Minecraft already ranks as the all-time most successful film adaptation from a video game.
The King of Kings, an animated telling of Jesus's life from indie media company Angel Studios, did well over Easter weekend, scoring an estimated $17.3 million in ticket sales.
Oscar Isaac, as Jesus, leads the voice cast, along with Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman and Mark Hamill.
20th Century thriller The Amateur slipped one spot to fourth place, taking in $7.2 million. Rami Malek plays a nerdy CIA analyst who turns vicious as he tracks down his wife's killers. Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Bernthal also star.
And in fifth place, also down one spot from last weekend, was A24's Warfare, at $4.9 million. Based partly on the experiences of co-director Ray Mendoza as a navy SEAL, the film follows a platoon of soldiers moving amid high tension through hostile territory. AFP

'Superman' poised to return to screens
Donning the famous red cape for the first time in the new Superman film gave actor David Corenswet a big confidence boost, as per Reuters. A relative newcomer, Corenswet follows in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve and, more recently, Henry Cavill, taking over the role of Clark Kent and Superman in the reboot film, which was launched with a red-carpet fan event in London on Wednesday. "When the cape gets on, it really ties the whole thing together. You walk out with it flowing behind you, you feel like, 'Yeah, I'm all right, I'll do okay'," Corenswet said on the red carpet. His acting credits include TV series The Politician and Hollywood, and films Twisters and Pearl. Superman offers the first look at director James Gunn's vision for the remake of the DC Universe (DCU) at Warner Bros. The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, who also wrote the Superman screenplay, said he wanted to combine elements from the comic books and the mythos of Superman in cinema. "My Superman is about, you know, in a world where there's so much meanness and so many petty things happening, Superman, who can often be seen as old-fashioned or too earnest, too kind, he is those things. I think that's the most rebellious thing that you can be in this day and age," Gunn said. "It's a movie about kindness. But it's all told in this universe with giant monsters and flying dogs and robots and space battles and everything else." The Marvelous Mrs Maisel actor Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, and Nosferatu, About a Boy and X-Men franchise actor Nicholas Hoult stars as Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. Hoult also drew inspiration from comic books for his portrayal of the iconic villain. "For instance, reading All-Star Superman, Lex really prides himself on being the peak alpha human, and so I really wanted to bring that kind of energy," Hoult said. Brosnahan said her predecessors in the role had set the bar high. Gunn's vision for the film was what set it apart from previous films, she said. "I think James's knowledge of and love for these characters and the different adventures that he's taking them on with the different friends he's taking them with, kind of inherently brings it into the present day," said Brosnahan. Superman begins its global cinematic rollout on July 9.

Gracie Abrams just soft-launched her relationship with Paul Mescal
Gracie Abrams has fans buzzing after posting a cosy photo with actor Paul Mescal following their time together at the Glastonbury Festival. On July 2, the 25-year-old singer shared a carousel of photos from the iconic U.K. music festival, which ran from June 25 to 29. The Instagram post featured candid snaps of her friends, family including her father, J.J. Abrams and a string of sweet festival moments. But the highlight? A laid-back shot of her lying beside the Normal People actor, 29, on what looked like a picnic blanket. Gracie, in a rose-coloured top and bandana, looked relaxed as she lounged next to Mescal. Another clip showed her perched on his shoulders, belting out The Cure's 'Friday I'm In Love' during Olivia Rodrigo and Robert Smith's surprise performance, a moment that only added fuel to the dating speculation. The Grammy-nominated artist also posted a group selfie that included Mescal, as well as images of her with Lorde and a video of Paul McCartney enjoying her Glastonbury debut performance of 'That's So True.' '❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,' she simply captioned the post, leaving fans to read between the lines. Abrams performed a well-received set at the festival, singing hits like 'Close to You,' 'That's So True,' and 'I Love You, I'm Sorry,' along with a crowd-pleasing cover of 'Just Like Heaven.' She and Mescal were first linked in June 2024, when they were spotted out together in London. These new photos suggest the connection is still going strong and fans are here for it.
