Why the Iconic Porsche 356 Is a Bucket-List Classic for Any Collection

When the automotive alphabet rolls around to 'P,' that usually means Porsche. That also means a near-infinite array of models for a marque with more than 75 years of history. Most every Porsche made is worth owning, and each, in some way, carries the DNA of the company's vehicular patriarch, the very first 356, quaintly called the 'bathtub' and looking like an inverted version of the same.
Numerous iterations of the 356 were made, from the earliest 356 'Pre-A' in 1948 to the last 356 C in 1965. Today, the least of the 356s can cost well over $80,000 in good condition, and rare Carrera four-cam examples can soar well into million-dollar territory. For series-production models, cabriolets generally command double the price of coupes.

When introduced, Porsche's giant killer was small, light, and nimble compared to most of its contemporaries, but also less powerful than all but a few. The engine was essentially a hopped-up Volkswagen power plant, and most 356 A examples, made from 1955 through 1959, were fit with a 1.6-liter flat-four, and could barely crank out 60 hp. The 356 Speedster, made from 1954 through 1958, was U.S. importer Max Hoffman's invention, and examples today are well beyond $150,000. The 356 B, made from 1959 through 1962, added twin grilles to the rear decklid and other modifications, including a less-attractive Karmann 'notchback' coupe design, somewhat controversial then and now.
The most advanced and well-built versions (though all 356s were well built, if highly prone to rust) are the 356 C and SC, made in 1964 and 1965, trading places in the Porsche lineup with the then-new, flat-six-powered 911 during the 356's last year of production. The 912, introduced in 1965, was a 911 minus two cylinders, making it the true (and final) successor to the 356, though it wasn't a replacement per se, but rather, an entirely new car.
Porsche's 356 is a wonderful classic to own and drive, and while power brokers won't be satiated, those with an appreciation for purity of concept and refined design will love it. Many enthusiasts gravitate toward the elemental 356 A, which is desirous in the same way a thin, non-automatic watch movement can be more satisfying than that found in a complicated chronograph.
The 356 C and SC, fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, are especially appealing. The 356 SC delivers 95 hp through twin Solex carburetors, making its engine the most powerful pushrod Porsche mill ever made. A four-speed manual transmission was the only shifting option throughout the entire 356 dynasty. While a car with its engine hung over the rear wheels was a novelty at the time, the concept is very familiar to today's drivers, who will find a 356 manageable if the laws of physics are generally observed. The good news is that, with relatively modest power, no one is likely to get into much trouble.
Trouble will come from a rusty or ill-repaired example. A project car is best left to professionals, and so a finished, restored vehicle is the smart choice. Original drivetrains and parts command a big premium in collector circles, where a concours-quality cabriolet can easily crest $250,000, and a Speedster double that. A basic 356 C coupe in good condition is about $85,000, with SC models nearing the $150,000 neighborhood, but values are greatly affected by condition, options, and even original color.
Replacement and reproduction parts are plentiful, and these cars' simple mechanical underpinnings allow many enthusiasts to do their own wrenching. The 356 is also a great blank canvas for restomod interpretation, with 'outlaw' versions powered by everything from bored-out, flat-four monsters to a 911's engine. The good news for those thinking about a Porsche 356 is that there is no single right answer to the question, 'Which one should I buy?'Best of Robb Report

Chinese auto maker Chery has announced that it is all set to begin pre-sales of its flagship plug-in hybrid sedan, the Fulwin A9L, towards the end of this month—with official launch in the domestic market scheduled for early July. Previously previewed as just Fulwin A9, the car caters to the mid-to-large sedan segment, competing with BYD's Han DM-i and the Geely Galaxy Starshine 8. The A9L debuted at the Hong Kong International Automotive and Supply Chain Expo on June 12, with pricing expected between $20,700 and $27,600. The car measures 5.018 meters in length, 1.965 meters in width and stands at a height of 3 meters. Under the hood, the sedan is powered by Chery's advanced Kunpeng Super Hybrid Electric 6.0 system, paired with a stepless DHT Pro transmission. Its 1.5T turbocharged engine produces 160 kW of peak power and 310 Nm of torque, working alongside a 33.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate Kunpeng Blade Battery. The hybrid setup enables a pure electric range of up to 161 miles and a total combined range of roughly 1,243 miles when fully charged and fueled. Chery has equipped the A9L with a high-performance infotainment system driven by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8255 chipset, a streamlined variant of the more advanced 8295. For driver assistance and autonomous functions, the vehicle relies on 27 intelligent sensors—including LiDAR, millimeter-wave radars, surround-view and panoramic cameras, as well as ultrasonic sensors—all connected to the Orin Y 200T computing platform for enhanced situational awareness and semi-autonomous capabilities. Thanks to this sensor suite and computing power, the A9L supports features like memory parking, Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) for both highway and urban driving, intelligent obstacle avoidance, and blind spot lane change alerts. However, some variants may forgo LiDAR, offering standard Level 2 driver assistance instead. This month at the 2025 International Automotive and Supply Chain Expo in Hong Kong, the company's Chairman Yin Tongyue announced that Chery will soon become the first Chinese automaker to export over 5 million vehicles. This event also marks Chery's first appearance at the Hong Kong Auto Expo, and the company plans to officially launch its vehicles in Hong Kong later this year, CarNewsChina reported. According to figures, between January and May 2025, Chery Group sold 1,026,517 vehicles, marking a 14% increase over the previous year. New energy vehicle (NEV) sales soared 111.5% year-on-year to 287,798 units, while exports reached 443,940 cars—meaning, on average, one Chery vehicle ships overseas every 29 seconds. In May, Chery Group sold 205,732 vehicles, a 9.1% increase, including 191,567 from Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., up 7.2%. New energy vehicle sales rose 47.7% to 63,169 units, and exports grew 7.7% to 100,737 units. By the end of May, Chery had over 16.7 million users worldwide, with more than 4.94 million outside China. Now, the Chery Fulwin A9L is gearing up for its global launch in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the company's dedication to growing its international footprint and advancing its global expansion plans. The drivers of a BMW M2 and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS were lucky to walk away with their lives after a scary crash on the Nürburgring this past Saturday, which left both cars totaled. The collision occurred during a tourist drive session at the quickest part of the circuit, sending the Porsche airborne and engulfing both vehicles in flames. Surveillance footage and video from inside the Porsche published to YouTube shows the 911 attempting to overtake the BMW on the left side of Kottenborn before the cars make contact, causing both drivers to lose control and careen into the barrier at a high rate of speed. The 911 launches into the air, while a fireball erupts at the same time. The entire front portion of the GT3 RS is ripped off in the crash, with suspension and body parts scattered along the circuit. The M2 didn't fare much better, with its front section smashed in and several body panels missing. Somehow, both drivers walked away from the incident without serious injury, according to Road & Track . An aftermath video published to TikTok (below) shows the damage in more detail, as well as the extensive damage done to the crash barriers. Who's At Fault? Going by the above video, it's tough to tell who's at fault here. Some may argue that the BMW driver didn't give the Porsche enough space to pass, or simply didn't know they were attempting to overtake. Others might say the GT3 driver should've exercised more caution, given the M2 driver's lack of courtesy and the danger associated with that area of the track. We suspect the internet will have its fair share of opinions either way. Regardless, a crash like this doesn't help enthusiasts. The beauty of the Nürburgring is the ability to show up with any road-legal car and start lapping, no training required. Incidents like this will have management rethinking that policy unless drivers show more caution and respect for the track. Keep it on the pavement, folks.
