Himachal improves school education levels under Sukhu govt, leaps to 5th place from 21st
The survey, conducted by NCERT for the academic year 2024-25, highlights remarkable improvement in learning outcomes under the present government.
The state secured 2nd rank in Grade 3, 5th in Grade 6, and 4th in Grade 9 nationally.
The progress marks a sharp turnaround from the previous NAS report, which ranked Himachal Pradesh much lower during the tenure of the previous BJP-led government.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's government is attributing this success to education-focused reforms introduced over the past year.
These include the merger of low-enrollment schools, rational deployment of teachers, fast-tracking recruitment for vacant posts, and establishing Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools in a phased manner across all constituencies.
Additionally, exposure visits for teachers and students to international educational institutions have helped improve teaching practices and broaden learning perspectives.
Rajesh Sharma, State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, termed the development a major achievement. He said an official announcement of the NAS 2025 rankings will be made in New Delhi on July 2, where he will represent the state.
Sharma emphasised that the consistent reforms introduced by the current government have begun to yield tangible results.
A government spokesperson added that the state's return to the top five reinforces Himachal Pradesh's growing image as a model for quality education.

Jagraon: Rare political unity: Oppn, farm unions join hands to protest land pooling policy
In a rare show of unity, leaders of all major political parties in opposition and prominent farmer organisations came together on one platform in Jagraon on Monday to oppose the Punjab government's land pooling policy. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring added that while land acquisition has existed since British times, it was the Congress-led UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh that brought a transformative law requiring 80% consent from landowners before any acquisition. (HT Photo) The protest held at the local tehsil checkpoint, saw participation from senior Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and BJP leaders, along with several grassroots-level farmer leaders and activists. Addressing the crowd, former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi launched a scathing attack on chief minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of handing over Punjab's agricultural land to outside forces. 'Before the elections, I warned people that the 'outsiders' do not care about Punjab. But no one listened. Today, we see the consequences,' Channi said. He vowed that if Congress is voted back to power, reversing this policy would be their first decision. 'Every inch of land taken will be returned to the farmers,' he promised, calling upon all Punjabis to unite against the government's move. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring added that while land acquisition has existed since British times, it was the Congress-led UPA government under Dr Manmohan Singh that brought a transformative law requiring 80% consent from landowners before any acquisition. 'Despite this protection, if the land is forcibly taken, we will not stay silent. The Congress will launch a full-scale agitation and will gherao the GLADA office in Ludhiana on July 14,' he announced. 'This is not just about land—it's a calculated strategy to erase Punjab's identity as an agriculture-based state. The land will be handed over to corporate mafias,' he said. Voicing similar concerns, Akali leader and MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, BJP's advocate Vikramjit Singh Sindhu, and former Akali MLA SR Kler stressed that the land pooling policy is a direct threat to the entire state. 'This is a fight for Punjab's future. If our land is lost, our economy will collapse. The CM is merely following orders from Delhi,' they claimed. The protest was also addressed by several other leaders and representatives of various organisations including Congress general secretary Capt Sandeep Sandhu, Didar Singh Malak and Gurvinder Singh Panna from the Land Pooling Policy Sangharsh Committee, former MLAs Tarsam Jadha and Kamaljit Singh Brar, former Congress district president Karanjit Soni Ghalib, former chairman Satinderpal Singh Kaka Gurwal, Kamaljit Singh Mallah, engineer Jagdeep Singh, and farmer leaders Mahinder Singh Kamalpura, Jagtar Singh Daharka, Gurdial Singh Talwandi, among others. Government's position The Punjab cabinet had last month given its nod to the land pooling policy and asserted that not even a single yard will be forcibly acquired from land owners. Under the land pooling policy, a land owner will be given 1,000 square yards of residential plot and 200 square yards of commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land, the state government had said earlier. The government had also said that the land pooling policy was designed to foster transparent and planned urban development across the state.

Mahayuti, BJP disown Jharkhand MP remarks on Marathi manoos
Mumbai: After Jharkhand BJP MP Nishikant Dubey stirred a fresh political row on Monday, saying people in Maharashtra were surviving on their money and those targeting non-Marathi speakers in the state would be thrashed badly again and again, the BJP in Maharashtra and the ruling Mahayuti alliance distanced themselves from the remarks. Ashish Shelar (Hindustan Times) Cultural affairs minister and Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar said that nobody should question the contribution and achievements of the Marathi manoos in the country. While replying to the long duration debate in the assembly, Shelar said he did not want to name the Jharkhand MP as he had not given notice, although he wanted to clear the stand of the state government, the Mahayuti and the BJP. 'The MP should not raise questions over the performance of the Marathi manoos. The contribution of Maharashtra in the national GDP is highest in the country,' Shelar said. The first film in India was produced by a Marathi person and the first army in Indian history was established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he said. 'We should not be questioned about our contribution….Nobody should say that Maharashtra is surviving on their money,' Shelar said in the assembly. His party and the state government would safeguard Marathi pride and ensure that non-Marathi people living in the state were not disrespected. Mashelkar committee report to be tabled Shiv Sena leader and Marathi language minister Uday Samant on Monday said the government would table the Mashelkar committee report on implementation of the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, 2020. Samant, while speaking in the legislative assembly, reiterated that the government had tried to make Hindi compulsory, but introduce it as a third language in schools. The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray had accepted Masheklar committee's report, which has a paragraph recommending Hindi be made mandatory alongside Marathi and English from class 1 to 12, on February 22, 2022, Samant said. 'The then CM had clearly tweeted on his social media account that the report would be implemented,' he said. The Mashelkar committee report would be tabled in the house and copies of the report would be made available to all MLAs, he added.
