Oscar Piastri breezes past Lando Norris to claim Belgian Grand Prix victory

South Wales Argus17 hours ago
The start of the 13th round in Spa-Francorchamps was delayed by one hour and 20 minutes due to heavy rain in the Ardennes.
But when it eventually got under way – following four precautionary laps behind the safety car – Norris was found wanting when a sloppy exit at the opening La Source corner provided Piastri with a race-winning opportunity too good to turn down.
Despite being in Norris' spray, Piastri held his nerve and kept his foot on the accelerator at 170mph up through Eau Rouge and into Raidillon before jinking to his left and sailing clear of his McLaren team-mate on the Kemmel Straight.
It was brave and superb in equal measure from Piastri but one Norris will be disappointed after seeing the his rival's championship advantage increase from nine points to 16 ahead of the final round before the summer break in Hungary next weekend.
Norris crossed the line 3.4 seconds behind Piastri with Charles Leclerc third for Ferrari.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished fourth, one place clear of Mercedes driver George Russell with Alex Albon an impressive sixth in his Williams.
Lewis Hamilton started 18th and finished seventh following a string of fine moves in the early inclement conditions.

At one point, there were fears the race – initially pencilled in for a start time of 3pm locally – could be abandoned after it was suspended following the formation lap due to poor visibility. Verstappen described the decision as 'silly' and 'too cautious'.
However, there have been 49 fatalities at this track in the last 100 years – most recently Dutch 18-year-old Dilano Van 't Hoff in 2023. And race director Rui Marques could be excused for taking that grizzly statistic into his consideration.
The drivers returned to their respective garages, and as the rain lashed down, memories were cast back to the event in 2021 – one which was abandoned after only two laps behind the safety car.
But the grey skies parted, the sun broke through, and at 16:20, pole-sitter Norris emerged on track, albeit behind the safety car, to huge cheers from the record-breaking crowd with 389,000 spectators over the last three days.
With visibility quickly improving, the safety car peeled in after four laps, and Norris bunched up the pack before attempting to put distance between himself and Piastri.

The advantage was in Norris's hands with Piastri having to navigate his team-mate's spray. But a scrappy exit at La Source from the Briton provided Piastri with the momentum and he soared past Norris and into the lead.
Piastri was 1.5 seconds quicker than Norris on the first racing lap leaving the Englishman – who arrived here hoping to claim a hat-trick of wins – facing a mammoth and improbable task.
Further back and Hamilton, armed with a new engine, passed both Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto in only a handful of corners before breezing clear of Nico Hulkenberg on lap eight for 14th. That became 13th a lap later following a fine move on Pierre Gasly.
On lap 11, Hamilton, who had described his Q1 elimination on Saturday as 'unacceptable', was then the first of the major players to move to the slick tyres. A slingshot manouvere on Liam Lawson in the moments after he left the pits promoted him to a net seventh when it all shook out.
In came leader Piastri for dry tyres on lap 12, with Norris in on the next lap. Norris took on the hardest tyre compound – the only driver to do so – in the hope that Piastri's medium rubber would not make it to the end.
But in a blow to Norris, Piastri's rubber lasted all 44 laps as he claimed his sixth win of the season – two more than the Briton – with the championship momentum swinging back to the Australian.
Norris said: 'Oscar just did a good job and there is nothing more to say. He committed more through Eau Rouge and got the slipstream so there is nothing to complain about. He did a better job at the beginning and there was nothing more I could do after that point.'
Piastri said: 'I knew lap one would be my best chance of winning the race. I got a good exit from the first corner and lifted as little as I dared through Eau Rouge.
'I was disappointed it was a rolling start because I thought that would take away the opportunity. But when I was that close I knew I would lift a little bit less than Lando did. It was lively up the hill, but I managed to make it stick.'

Max Verstappen 2026 F1 plans decided as Red Bull release clause saga takes fresh twist

The biggest Formula 1 2025 silly season story by far has been the constant speculation that Max Verstappen could quit Red Bull to replace George Russell at Mercedes Max Verstappen is almost certain to stick with Red Bull for the 2026 season with his release clause set to expire. It is understood that the Dutchman would have been free to trigger an exit from the team if he were to find himself fourth or lower in the championship by the Formula 1 summer break. ‌ But that is now mathematically impossible after his strong haul at the Belgian Grand Prix. Verstappen won Saturday's Sprint race and finished fourth in the rain-affected main event a day later. He is third in the championship and 28 points ahead of George Russell in fourth, with one race to go until the break. ‌ Even if Verstappen were to finish Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix pointless, and Russell were to win in Budapest, he would still be above the Brit in the championship. And so his easiest route out of Red Bull has now been blocked, amid speculation he could quit for rivals Mercedes. ‌ Despite the poor form of struggling rookie Kimi Antonelli, who finished pointless again on Sunday, Russell was by far the most likely Silver Arrows driver to make way if they had managed to lure Verstappen. Both Mercedes drivers are out of contract at the end of this year, as it stands. But a new deal for Antonelli is still likely to be a formality despite his difficult run – his first F1 podium in Canada was his only points finish across the last seven events. And despite delays to Russell's renewal, it is now expected that he too will put pen to paper on fresh terms in the coming weeks after a recent breakthrough in talks. The 27-year-old told Sky Sports on Sunday that he does not expect to sign a new deal before the Budapest race. And a few days earlier he had claimed it was "unlikely" that he would secure his future by the summer break. But the one thing boss Toto Wolff was waiting on, the potential availability of four-time World champion Verstappen for the 2026 season, now seems to be out of the question. Without an exit clause available, it would now take an enormous compensation offer – likely north of £100million – to convince Red Bull to part with their prized asset. Verstappen is contracted until 2028 and is believed to earn around £50m per year in guaranteed salary, before performance bonuses. ‌ Whether he sees out that deal, though, will largely depend on Red Bull's performance next term. Verstappen's streak of titles will almost certainly end this year with McLaren dominating the grid and he will want to spend as little time as possible out of contention. He turns 28 in September and has consistently indicated that he will retire from F1 racing comparatively early, even at times suggesting that his current Red Bull deal could be his last. He will want a title-winning car as often as possible and, if Red Bull are not competitive next year, when they will be using their own engines built in-house for the first time, then he is likely to consider his options. Links to Mercedes are likely to resurface if they produce the best new engine, as they did in 2014 the last time the sport's power unit rules changed. But, for now, the most eye-catching of 2025 F1 silly season stories seems to have reached its final chapter.

He made a huge impact in Europe last season as Spurs made it all the way to the Europa League Final and won it under Ange Postecoglou. Moore was an unused substitute as Spurs beat Man Utd 1-0 in that final. He scored his first senior goal in their 3-0 win over Elfsborg to round-off their league stage campaign. It was the last kick of the game but a historic moment. The goal saw Moore become the youngest-ever English goalscorer in a major European competition at 17 years and 172 days old. It broke a record that had stood since 1957 when Jimmy Greaves struck when he was also 17. Moore, who's been capped by England at under-19 level, had been expected to head out of Tottenham on loan this summer. Several English Championship clubs had been credited with an interest, including Birmingham and West Brom. Russell Martin opens up after he got sent off by John Beaton in pre-season friendly vs 'Boro But now, Rangers are in pole position to seal a deal for Moore, according to a report. The Daily Telegraph say that the Gers have 'emerged as favourites' to sign Moore on loan. The report adds that a switch to Ibrox is now seen as the most likely destination for the forward. Rangers have been on the hunt for reinforcements in the wide areas all summer long. They sealed a deal for Djeidi Gassama a couple of weeks ago and he went on to make a stunning impact by scoring on his debut against Panathinaikos. 4 But Gassama and a potential move for Moore might not be the end of business as far as signing wingers goes. Rangers are also reportedly interested in signing Oliver Antman from Go Ahead Eagles. The £5m-rated Finland international, 23, enjoyed a highly productive season in the Eredivisie last season and is attracting plenty of transfer interest. But reports claim the Dutch club are 'expecting' a bid from Rangers. The Gers head to Greece this week to face Panthinaikos in the second leg of that crucial Champions League qualifier. Goals from Findlay Curtis and Gassama see the Light Blues take a 2-0 lead to Athens with them. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Celtic fans given Italian stadium ban as police chief speaks

Celtic's opening game in the Como Cup pre-season tournament last week was marred by ugly clashes between fans of the Scottish champions and Ajax, who won 5-1. It was sparked by the waving of the Palestinian flag and Como police commissioner Marco Calì has taken swift action by issuing banning orders across Italian stadiums for a total of eight years to five Celtic fans, based in the city of Lecco. And he explained why his police force intervened. Read more: He said: "The bans for the Celtic fans were issued for provocation, not for the Palestinian flag itself. "Despite the utmost respect for the suffering of a people, the stadium is a place with rules. And failure to comply with them, obviously, has consequences. "The rules on what can be brought into a stadium during a football match include a strict ban on bringing symbols, banners, or flags with political overtones. This is because the stadium is a sporting venue. "The central issue was their behaviour during the match. They came down from the stands and approached the Dutch fans, who were very calm, with the sole intent of provoking. "Their behaviour was gratuitous and provocative, and we must say, we cannot accept this because it risks inflaming tempers. "The stadium is a place with rules. And these impose on the authorities the obligation to intervene if symbols with political connotations, not football-related ones, are brought inside. But I reiterate, the bans were not because of the Palestinian flag."
