Suspected carjacker in custody after car crash, fire in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, police say

CBS News25-02-2025
A suspected carjacker is in custody after a wild chain of events happened in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park Tuesday morning, according to police.
Chopper 3 was over the area near Sweetbriar and Lansdowne drives where Philadelphia police say the suspect crashed his Toyota sedan into a tree, which then burst into flames.
A nearby man saw the suspect, who police say appeared to be under the influence, and went over to help him at around 11:15 a.m. But the suspect got angry, tried assaulting the man and ultimately chased him away.
The man got back in his car and moved a little ways away from the suspect before seeing another person try and help the suspect. The suspect began assaulting the second person, leading the original man to jump in and spray pepper spray at the suspect.
Police say the suspect then carjacked the second person's silver BMW 530i and drove away before returning minutes later to try and run both people over. Fortunately, the suspect wasn't successful in his efforts. He did however end up crashing the BMW into a ravine.
The suspect went back to where his Toyota sedan was still on fire and found firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze. The suspect attacked the firefighters by swinging fallen tree branches at them, according to police.
Authorities said officers arrived, tased the suspect and were able to detain him.
Police said the suspect was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for his injuries.
The fire marshal said the blaze was caused by the Toyota sedan crashing into the tree.

An attempted burglary reported Monday night in Los Angeles took place at a home that property records show belongs to Teddi Mellencamp. The Los Angeles Police Department said a call came in around 10:15 p.m. local time Monday for a burglary with residents inside. When police officers arrived at the home, the suspected burglars had left the home without obtaining full access The suspects gained entry to the property possibly through the garage but did not get far before they ran off, according to the LAPD. BSO detectives search for woman whose disappearance they say ‘may be suspicious'

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are looking for help locating a woman who was last seen getting into a white BMW leaving a Pompano Beach Target store Sunday night. Detectives say the circumstances around the disappearance of 30-year-old Summer Leo 'may be suspicious.' The last time anyone saw her was shortly before 7 p.m. exiting the parking lot of the Target, located at 3200 North Federal Highway, in a BMW M340i, with a license plate number of AH34SK, according to the sheriff's office. The car is registered to a 39-year-old man named Timothy Bowman, the sheriff's office said. On Monday night, the sheriff's office said the car was last spotted in the Tampa area. Detectives are looking for both Leo and Bowman, according to the BSO. The agency said Monday it could not release any other information about either person, including where they're from or whether Bowman has a criminal history. The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information on their whereabouts or the BMW to call Detective Shane Fairbanks at 954-321-4380 or the BSO non-emergency number at 954-764-HELP (4357).

‘I'd Call the Police:' Woman Stops at Stoplight. Then She Notices Something Unusual About the BMW Trunk in Front of Her

A driver's morbid curiosity was triggered by the sight of an external latch affixed to the trunk of a car. In front of him, was a what appeared to be BMW 3 Series. The driver, who posts under the handle @blueb3rrysony, uploaded footage of the vehicle. Some thought there was a mundane explanation as to why the car was outfitted with such a setup. Others were alarmed. Theories ranged from human trafficking to the driver being rear-ended and not having the time or money to fix the damage. The video begins with a recording of a black sedan sitting in traffic at a red light. She zooms in to reveal a metal latch screwed to the car's trunk. A small, copper-tinted padlock is looped through the latch, making the setup look like something out of a horror movie. 'Saw this trunk locked and I just couldn't help but wonder why,' @blueb3rrysony writes in a text overlay of her clip. Her post has 446,000 views as of this writing. A DIY Fix or a Nefarious Plot? Plenty of people who saw the post surmised that it was simply a quick fix for a busted lock. 'They might be keeping it from coming open,' one said. Another opined, 'Kidnappers probably wouldn't put [a] suspicious lock on a container that already has an inconspicuous lock. Their trunk's latch is probably just busted.' Then a Sign Falls On Her Car 'It could be an old car and the thing is broken. If it's not that then it is very suspicious for that to be there,' a third said. Someone else noticed a key detail about the car: a missing back bumper. 'Guessing on how the rear bumper is missing it got into an accident. So the latch doesn't align with the lock so they added that to lock it,' they wrote. At least one person was concerned. 'I'd call the police,' they wrote. One of the people who replied to @blueb3rrysony's video speculated the jerry-rigged latch had more to do with finances than kidnapping. 'Not everyone can afford to replace the actual car trunk lock…sometimes people need to improvise not everyone has money,' they said.
