New 49ers punter Thomas Morstead picks new jersey number, which was already being worn
With that, San Francisco let O'Donnell go unsigned in free agency, and they opted to release Wishnowsky last month to sign veteran punter Thomas Morstead.
Morstead, 39, joined the 49ers after 12 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, one with the Miami Dolphins, three with the New York Jets and a short stint with the Atlanta Falcons.
When Morstead originally signed with San Francisco, he chose to wear No. 9, but he quickly informed fans who, as he said, would be so bold as to buy a punter's jersey, that it wouldn't be his permanent number for the 2025 season.
On Thursday, Morstead announced that he'll officially wear No. 7 this year, which he hasn't worn despite wearing five different numbers in his career. Interestingly, No. 7 did belong to kicker Greg Joseph, who played with Morstead in New York last season. However, it appears that Joseph is switching to No. 3, which he'll share with wide receiver Malik Knowles for now.
It's unclear if Morstead bought the number from Joseph, which has become customary in the NFL these days, but the two clearly have a relationship, so there's a chance that San Francisco's new kicker gave it to his friend.
Joseph has worn six different numbers in his six previous stops, including No. 7, which he wore with the Tennessee Titans in his two games with them in 2019.

Jauan Jennings dealing with dangerous injury for 2nd time this offseason
The San Francisco 49ers have another injury at the top of their receiving corps. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings left Sunday's practice early because of a calf issue. It's the second time this offseason he's dealt with a calf problem. Jennings also had a calf ailment in OTAs according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch. This is a tenuous situation for the 49ers because they desperately need Jennings to be healthy this season. He led the team's wide receivers with 975 yards a year ago and he looked to be in line for a similar role to start the 2025 campaign. Calf injuries are tricky because of the proximity to and potential impact on the Achilles. Just last season running back Christian McCaffrey missed virtually all of training camp with what the team called a calf injury. It turns out it was Achilles tendinitis that cost the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year the first eight weeks of the regular season. Jennings joins Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing in the group of 49ers WRs dealing with injuries early in camp. Aiyuk is still recovering from a major knee injury he sustained in Week 7 last year, and Cowing is out for some time because of a hamstring injury he suffered on the first day of camp. Pearsall missed the start of camp because of a hamstring injury, but he did return to the field Sunday. If Jennings winds up missing significant time, it leaves the door wide open for Pearsall to take on the No. 1 WR role. The problem is the rest of the depth chart where veteran Demarcus Robinson is probably next up as the WR2. Rookie fourth-round pick Jordan Watkins could see additional reps with the first team, and veterans like Russell Gage could make their case for a roster spot if the top of the depth chart continues having health problems. Ideally Jennings won't miss a ton of time, but the location of his injury means the team should be smart with him and ensure they're not rushing him back into action. 49ers DE Tarron Jackson hospitalized after collision at training camp
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Tarron Jackson was hospitalized after a collision at training camp on Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the news to reporters after a morning practice session. Per beat writers on the scene, Jackson went down to the turf after being blocked and did not get up. He received treatment on the scene and was taken off the field on a backboard several minutes later. Shanahan told reporters that Jackson was conscious and had movement in his extremities. Jackson was transported to Stanford hospital for further evaluation. The precise nature of his injury was not clear from initial reports. He rejoined the Eagles as a member of their practice squad and remained on the practice squad in 2023. He then signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad in 2024 and played in three games with Carolina during the regular season. Jackson signed with the 49ers in January.

49ers activate Ricky Pearsall
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall hit the practice field for the first time this summer. The 49ers activated Pearsall from the physically unable to perform list in time to participate in Sunday's practice. The session is the team's fourth of the summer and they will put full pads on for the first time on Monday. Pearsall missed time in the offseason program with a hamstring injury and head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the PUP placement was to ensure that the 2024 first-round pick didn't try to do too much too soon in camp. Pearsall had 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games during his rookie season. He missed the first six games of the year after being shot in the chest just before the start of the regular season.
