This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Powerhouse Could Be Just Getting Started
Artificial intelligence (AI) has long drawn the interest of investors. AI has been used in various forms going back to the turn of the century for companies like Google parent Alphabet, and others. The generative AI boom is a much more recent breakthrough, and it is driving considerable investment returns for companies like Nvidia and Palantir Technologies. The AI-based breakthroughs continue, and that is inspiring gains in other AI-driven tech stocks. Such gains may have just begun for one particular tech stock. A stock positioned to benefit from AI The stock that is well-positioned to start benefiting from the latest AI changes is Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM). Admittedly, Qualcomm does not look much like a winner in AI. It released the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the fall of 2023, empowering users to incorporate AI into their smartphones. Although revenue growth in handset sales eventually returned to double-digit levels, AI has failed to inspire the level of increased sales that Qualcomm experienced when users wanted to upgrade to 5G. Moreover, after years of failed attempts, Apple appears finally ready to replace Qualcomm's chips in the iPhone with chips of its own design. Assuming Apple does not reverse course, Qualcomm is set to lose one of its largest customers. However, it may hearten investors to know that Qualcomm has long prepared for the day when it will depend less on smartphones. Its Internet-of-Things (IoT) segment has applied its communications abilities to develop end-to-end IoT solutions for applications such as smart homes and industrial automation. Additionally, its communications and AI advances could make it a leader in self-driving through its automotive segment. In the first six months of fiscal 2025 (ended March 30), revenue for the IoT and automotive segments increased at annual rates of 31% and 60%, respectively, significantly outpacing the 12% growth in the handset segment over the same period. Furthermore, Qualcomm has developed PC chips, making it a competitor to AMD and Intel. In the data center market, it has also partnered with Nvidia to develop custom chips that can support AI workloads within data centers. Effects on financials These recent advancements appear to be helping Qualcomm's top and bottom lines more than its stock. In the first two quarters of fiscal 2025, revenue of nearly $23 billion increased by 17% compared with the same period in fiscal 2024. During the same period last year, revenue had risen by only 3% annually. In the first six months of the year, Qualcomm kept a lid on operating expense growth. Still, with lower investment income and rising income tax expenses, its $6 billion in net income grew by 18% yearly. Nonetheless, such improvements have not swayed investors. Over the last 12 months, Qualcomm stock dropped by almost 20%, though it is up 27% from the lows it reached in April. Additionally, the stock sells at a 16 P/E ratio. Although that is not much lower than the average P/E ratio of 20 over the last five years, the earnings multiple suggests a lack of investor optimism about Qualcomm stock. And yet, this reasonable valuation could inspire a bull market in Qualcomm stock. Assuming its non-handset segments continue to grow at a rapid rate, it could start Qualcomm stock on a long-term growth trend. The growth prospects of Qualcomm stock Considering the state of Qualcomm's business and stock, it has real potential to begin a long-term growth trend. Admittedly, a lackluster AI growth cycle and the likelihood of losing Apple as a customer have soured some investors on Qualcomm. However, the company has returned to revenue and earnings growth, and its burgeoning IoT and automotive segments deserve significant credit for this surge. Ultimately, such improvements should not lead to a falling stock price and a rock-bottom valuation. Once Qualcomm's role in AI becomes clearer, such conditions could inspire the beginning of a long-term uptrend in Qualcomm stock. Should you invest $1,000 in Qualcomm right now? Almonty Industries (TSX:AII), one of the world's top tungsten producers, is the newest member of the S&P/TSX Global Mining Index, effective June 23, 2025 Almonty is a global provider of tungsten concentrate in conflict-free regions, including from its producing Panasqueira mine in Portugal and its Sangdong mine in South Korea, which is slated to begin operations in 2025 Almonty stock has added 622.58 per cent since 2020 Almonty Industries (TSX:AII), one of the world's top tungsten producers, is the newest member of the S&P/TSX Global Mining Index, effective June 23, 2025. The index acts as a benchmark for globally traded miners, with holdings diversified across producers and developers of precious, base and specialty metals. According to Monday's news release, the inclusion aligns with 'Almonty's growing profile in the global mining sector and ongoing momentum in the tungsten industry, driven by ongoing geopolitical events.' Tungsten, the strongest metal on earth, is a critical commodity with applications spanning ballistics, mining and construction – predominantly in the form of tungsten carbide, a derivative whose hardness rivals that of a diamond – granting the metal a more than US$2.5 billion market expected to compound annually at 7.4 per cent through 2029. China's control of more than 81 per cent of global tungsten production makes conflict-free supply a matter of national security for Western nations, opening up a high-potential opportunity for miners and producers to meet demand. This is where Almonty enters the picture, with numerous production expansion initiatives underway at mines in Portugal and South Korea, and the company currently on track to reach its goal of controlling 7 per cent of global tungsten supply and 40 per cent of non-Chinese supply by 2027. Propelled by a blossoming relationship with the U.S. government and near-term production at its Sangdong mine in South Korea – which is expected to deliver 259,000 tons of tungsten trioxide over a more than 90-year production life – Almonty stock has generated a staggering 549.28 per cent return year-over-year, with increasing scale and pricing power headed in the direction of net income profitability and continued shareholder value generation. Leadership insights 'We are honored to be included in the S&P/TSX Global Mining Index,' Lewis Black, Almonty's president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. 'This recognition underscores the continued execution of our strategy and the increasing relevance of Almonty as a leading supplier of tungsten for the defense needs of the U.S. and its allies. We look forward to leveraging this momentum as we continue to advance our Sangdong project and seek to create sustainable, long-term value for my fellow shareholders.' About Almonty Industries Almonty is a global provider of tungsten concentrate in conflict-free regions, including from its producing Panasqueira mine in Portugal and its Sangdong mine in South Korea, which is slated to begin operations in 2025. The company is also focused on its Valtreixal tin-tungsten and Los Santos tungsten development projects in Spain. Almonty stock (TSX:AII) last traded at C$4.48. Nike Stock Could Soar 60%, According to 1 Wall Street Analyst. Is It a Buy Now?
Nike (NYSE: NKE) stock has been in a downward spiral for the past three years as sales declined, and it appeared to be losing its edge. But all hope is not lost. The company just reported a strong earnings beat, and it's the leader, by far, in its industry. In fact, one Wall Street analyst sees Nike stock shooting 60% higher over the next 12 to 18 months even after it jumped 15% after earnings. Should you buy it today? Getting back in the game Nike has been dealing with multiple mishaps. It's reestablishing partnerships with wholesalers after cutting some of them out a few years ago; it's getting back on top of its innovation pipeline; and it's going back to sports after prioritizing lifestyle products. It has a new CEO whom the investing community is pumped about, and he's been making changes that the market is liking. A full turnaround is still in the works, but Nike reported better-than-expected earnings for the 2025 fiscal fourth quarter (ended May 31), and it looks like the plan is taking shape. Sales were down 12% from last year in the quarter, with Nike Direct sales down 14%. Gross margin declined by 4.4 percentage points to 40.3%, and earnings per share dropped 86% to $0.14. If that doesn't sound so great to you, consider that Wall Street was expecting only $0.12. Although there's a long way back up, the market appreciated Nike's update and reassurance about how it's progressing. CEO Elliot Hill restructured innovation to focus on lines rather than categories, keeping the athlete at the center. It also widened its wholesale channels to reach more customers in more places, including premium chain Aritzia and Urban Outfitters, which is geared toward the younger shopper. Notably, it's going back to selling on Amazon after a very public breakup five years ago. Hill, a Nike veteran who's been in the lead role since October, gave some important examples of progress: Launches through wholesale partners Dick's Sporting Goods and led to higher sales. The day before it hosted a race at its LA-based store at the Grove, a premium shopping center had its highest sales in three years. It presented its best looks from the French Open finals, leading to a 30% sales increase day to day. Is Nike losing its grip on first place? Nike's lead against its competition is so wide that it really has no competition, at least for first place. That gives it some wiggle room to fix its mistakes and work things out before the situation escalates, but investors shouldn't ignore the risks. Some of its competitors have been posting much better performance despite operating in the same environment. Lululemon Athletica, which hasn't been impressing the market lately, still reported a 7% sales increase in its most recent quarter, and new brand On Holding reported a gargantuan 43% increase. I often cite the Piper Sandler Taking Stock With Teens survey as a good glimpse of how younger customers are shopping because their trends drive future growth. Nike has been in first place for favorite shoe brand for years, and it remained in first place in the recent spring update. However, Nike's share fell from recent averages of around 60% to only 49%. Converse, which has recently featured in the No. 2 spot, wasn't in the top three. These findings aren't alarming, but investors should take them into account when making decisions. A global industry leader Nike is still the brand to beat, and as it progresses, it's looking more likely to make a real comeback. Several Wall Street analysts upgraded their price targets after the recent report, including HSBC, which upgraded the stock to a buy and gave a price target of $80. Jefferies maintained its price target of $115, which is 60% higher than the stock's recent price. Nike also pays a growing dividend that yields 2.2% at the current price, which makes it attractive for passive income investors even while the company is still struggling. If you have a long timeline, you could buy Nike stock today and enjoy the dividend while the stock gets back to work. It's a blue chip stock that should bounce back and offer resilience over time. Should you invest $1,000 in Nike right now? Before you buy stock in Nike, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Nike wasn't one of them.
