Delhi HC issues notice to police on plea of Jamia violence accused Asif Iqbal
The case stems from 2019-2020 protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh following passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament on December 11, 2019.
On March 7, additional sessions judge Vishal Singh, presiding over the case at Saket court, had framed charges under various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 109 (abetment of an offence), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), sections 143, 147, 148, 149 (unlawful assembly and rioting), sections 186, 353, 332, 333, 308, 427, 435, 323, 341 (various charges related to assault, obstruction of public servants, grievous hurt, and damage to property) and sections 3/4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
The judge had observed that Aasif was named in the FIR as one of the persons who was present at the spot of violence and was leading the mob, which was also confirmed through the CDR and location of his mobile number.
Besides Tanha, the trial court had also charged former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Sharjeel Imam, observing that he was not only an instigator but also one of the 'kingpins' of the larger conspiracy to incite violence during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Delhi in 2019.
On Monday, justice Sanjeev Narula sought Delhi police's response and fixed October 30 as the next date of hearing, along with Shajreel's petition against the same order.
In his petition, argued by advocate Siddharth Satija, Tanha argued that the order was passed without any due application of mind and appreciation of evidence on record.
Besides the 2019 Jamia violence case, Tanha is also an accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. The Delhi high court in 2021 granted bail to Tanha along with Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita in the conspiracy case, on the grounds of delay in trial.

Parl stalled, Rijiju says may press for bills' passage without debate
NEW DELHI: The governmentt would be compelled to press for the passage of bills in "national interest" without discussion if Parliament proceedings are disrupted, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju warned on Monday, as the opposition continued its protest over the revision of Bihar's electoral rolls, with Lok Sabha failing to take up two key proposed legislations related to sports. Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect following the death of sitting MP and JMM founder Shibu Soren. 'I've heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow - fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either (sic.),' Omar wrote on X, as the state remained abuzz that Jammu may become a separate state. 'I'm still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow (sic.),' Omar said in a veiled reference to restoration of statehood, adding: 'And no, I haven't had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi. Domestic gas cylinder delivery agent gets 5 years' RI for sexually assaulting 3-year-old girl in 2019
1 2 Pune: The court of additional sessions judge Sucheta Takalikar on July 31 convicted and sentenced a 34-year-old domestic LPG cylinder delivery agent to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined him Rs3,000 for sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl at her residence in 2019. The court also sentenced the accused to one year of RI and fined him Rs2,000 on the charge of molesting the survivor. The accused will have to undergo additional imprisonment of one month and of 15 days if both fines, respectively, are not deposited. The sentences awarded to the accused will run concurrently. The accused, who was out on bail, was taken into custody and sent to Yerwada Central Jail for undergoing the sentence. Additional public prosecutor Suchitra Narote told the court that the delivery agent, while replacing an empty domestic LPG cylinder with a filled one, sexually assaulted and molested the minor girl while she was playing in the kitchen on April 10, 2019. Narote said the accused took to his heels after he was caught by the survivor's mother.
