Forget Smurfs, take your children to see Bad Guys 2 this summer

The perfect heist shouldn't be limited by pesky logistics. In theory, then, it's something animated characters can pull off better than anyone. Your Clooneys, Cruises, Pitts or Bullocks may have a bunch of swanky capers studding their résumés, but the opening sequence of The Bad Guys 2 out-dazzles them all.
Out in time for the summer holidays, this sequel to DreamWorks' 2022 hit about a quintet of animal outlaws will make kids feel cool and parents cool for taking them. It starts with a flashback to the good old days – by which it means, the bad old days, when this now-reformed gang of five (a wolf, a tarantula, a shark, a piranha and a snake) were unrepentant criminals.
A head-spinning car chase through Cairo – after the heroes have glitter-bombed the palace of a rich sultan – is a spiffing showcase for the visual style, which uses computer animation (fusing 2D and 3D) to look as hand-drawn as the filmmakers can pretend. As a yahooing Mr Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell to sound eerily like Clooney) makes his getaway with the crew, we really kick into gear. The animation style is a Hanna-Barbera/Looney Tunes throwback, a comic book being sped up and slowed down. It's frisky and inspired.
There's a plot, too, which is a good deal less sluggish than Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, while also being almost needlessly intricate if you decide to bother following it. (Basic version: a gold-lusting trio called The Bad Girls lure our heroes into one last job, and they fall for the ruse.)
There's really no need to over-concentrate, though. We're in this for the set pieces, the razzle-dazzle, and anarchic comeback vibes, backed up with muscle by Daniel Pemberton's music (of Ocean's 8 fame). We accept the esprit de corps between these creatures, all much-maligned figures in the animal kingdom, and the gambit that they're good guys deep down. We still want to watch them do bad things.
Craig Robinson's Mr Shark is nominally a master of disguise – somehow no one sees through it, even when he's donning a moustache and wig to pose as an Italian florist, say. The script defaults to easy running gags of this ilk (Mr Piranha emits toxic green gas when he's nervous). This is the weak spot: coarse material it knows kids will lap up.
It isn't wrong. It just misses the verbal wit of, say, a Brad Bird (who wrote and directed The Incredibles and Ratatouille) to seduce the rest of us with devil-may-care suavity. Even so, anyone interested in animation needs to pay attention to what these films are doing. The writing formula may be crude, but the whiz-bang aesthetic is sensational.

A family friendly heist movie about a crew of lovable rogues, it smartly used all the tricks of a good con artist movie to serve up an amusing message about not judging books by their covers. The Bad Guys 2 | Contributed Set a few years on, The Bad Guys 2 recaptures that vibe, picking up the action as Mr Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Tarantula (Awkwafina), Shark (Craig Robinson) and Snake (Marc Maron) wrestle with the down-to-earth tedium of now being the Good Guys in a world that's reluctant to give them a second chance. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Struggling to find work and bored with a life devoid of car chases and danger, they soon find themselves framed for a series of robberies and decide to use their criminal expertise to prove their innocence and catch the real crooks. Where the first film took its breezy stylistic cues from Ocean's Eleven, the new one kicks the action up a ridiculous notch or two with some old school Bond-style villainy involving rockets to space and obligatory pops at the tech oligarchy. It also makes room for some husky-voiced hilarity from the ubiquitous Natasha Lyonne, cast here as the ominously named Doom, the not-quite-what-she-seems avian romantic interest for Snake who also just happens to be part of an all-female-crew of criminals trying to lure the Bad Guys out of retirement.

EXCLUSIVE Hollywood legend Tom Cruise has seemingly managed to do the impossible – by bagging him and his pals tickets for this weekend's sold-out Oasis gig in London Tom Cruise has successfully completed another ' Mission Impossible ' - after managing to buy tickets to see Oasis this weekend for himself and a large group of friends. ‌ The actor will be one of many A-list celebrities expected to watch the band fronted by Liam and Noel Gallagher at London's Wembley Stadium on the latest leg of their sold out tour. ‌ Millions of fans tried unsuccessfully to get tickets, while others had a 4 tickets per person limit. But Hollywood actor Tom has pulled in some favours and got up to 20 tickets for himself and his pals. ‌ Inside Oasis' wild afterparties with footballers and free booze as they let loose Liam Gallagher's split with Patsy Kensit sparked horror Wembley gig that haunted band A source close to the band said: "Tom Cruise is used to seeing some spectacular things in Hollywood and on film sets, but he has heard the new Oasis show is out of this world and was very keen to see it for himself. There are no stunts involved, but the atmosphere will be electric. ‌ "Tom is excited to see the gig, and his friends were thrilled he was able to offer them tickets too. They are hard for even the biggest and richest people to secure. "He is taking up to 20 people with him, and must be one of the few people on this tour who will be able to attend with such a big group. "The story of the reunion between Liam and Noel after almost two decades would also make a great film script. So, perhaps if Tom gets the chance, he can speak to the boys about an Oasis movie. It would surely be a box office hit after the success of this tour." ‌ Cruise, 63, is perhaps best known for his Mission Impossible films. He played fictional agent Ethan Hunt in eight Mission: Impossible films. Oasis are returning to perform at Wembley Stadium for the first time since July 12, 2009, during their Dig Out Your Soul tour.
