Jaws director was told he'd 'never work again' by 'mean' Hollywood star
Steven Spielberg has opened up about the troubled production of his 1975 hit thriller, Jaws.
Steven Spielberg has revealed a tough encounter with a Hollywood star prior to the release of Jaws.
The acclaimed director became a household name following the success of his 1975 blockbuster thriller, Jaws, which was notorious for its challenging production.

Adapted from Peter Benchley's 1974 novel, the movie chronicles the ordeal of a small coastal town terrorised by a Great White shark and the local officials' efforts to capture the menacing creature.

Spielberg filmed the horror flick in open waters and relied on a mechanical shark for the scarier sequences. Regrettably, the shark suffered from persistent technical issues, causing significant delays in production.
Additionally, the weather posed problems for the filmmaker, who at that point had directed only one full-length film, reports the Mirror US.

"We're not sailors. We were filmmakers and we were a film company. And we were way out of our element," Spielberg concedes.
"There were times, making that movie, where I thought Jaws would probably be the last thing I ever made before people would stop hiring me."
The Oscar-winning director shares his experiences in Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, an introspective documentary set to air on National Geographic this Friday, July 11th.

The National Geographic documentary not only offers behind-the-scenes tales but also includes archival footage from the making of Jaws and interviews with the original cast members.
As Spielberg was attempting to manage his on-set difficulties, word of the problematic production began to circulate around Hollywood.
"I mean it was reported everywhere," states Star Wars director George Lucas in the documentary.

However, it wasn't just the media who were engrossed in the seemingly doomed film. Spielberg also remembers an actor warning him that he would never secure another role after Jaws, due to the notorious delays and budget overruns.
"About sixty days into the schedule, and we were already like twenty days behind schedule. Somebody from Hollywood, an actor, approached me and said 'Everybody's talking about you, you're never gonna get a job after this movie because you're irresponsible with the budget," discloses the 78-year-old director.

He continues: "This actor was so convinced I would never work again, they didn't mind telling me that. It was a very cruel thing, by the way, to do."

Although he shrugged off the encounter, Spielberg concedes that the remark was "demoralising".

Despite the setbacks, the Saving Private Ryan director received backing from other big names.
"Martin Scorsese used to come over to the set, from New York," he reveals.
"He'd fly down to Martha's Vineyard and he would just sit there feeling sorry for me and we would commiserate."

Danny DeVito breaks silence on Jack Nicholson's health after frail public appearance sparked fan concern

Danny DeVito has opened up about his friend Jack Nicholson and said the Oscar winner is doing 'great.' Nicholson, 87, was last seen in public during an appearance on the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary show in February, and many fans were concerned he looked quite frail. DeVito, 80, spoke about his long friendship with Nicholson, while promoting the 50th anniversary re-release of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, their first film together. 'I just saw Jack a couple weeks ago — it was his birthday a month ago, and he's great,' the Taxi star told People. Looking back on the experience of making the groundbreaking 1975 film, DeVito said he and his fellow cast members — including Christopher Lloyd and Louise Fletcher — were 'in awe' of Nicholson, who had already been building a reputation with films such as Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, and Chinatown. 'We're in the presence of this guy who's really at his moment, where he was breaking out into the big time,' DeVito said of his initial encounter. 'There was no need for an icebreaker,' the Emmy winner recalled. 'He was immediately just so embracing…He started out exactly the way everybody else did, where he couldn't get a job. It was like he came to Hollywood and he was going to just write and direct, and then comes along after the Corman stuff,' he said of Nicholson's start in low-budget thrillers such as The Terror and The St. Valentine's Day Massacre. 'He was in our milieu, and he was always just as open and genuine, and we all felt it immediately,' DeVito said. 'Of course, he was doing it because he's that way,' the write and director explained. 'And he was also doing it because that had to be, because we had to be all joined at the hip in that movie, and we had such great performances.' DeVito noted he and Nicholson eventually bonded over their shared New Jersey backgrounds. They were born in the same hospital and both had sisters who were hair dressers in the same local area. The two would go on to work together again on Goin' South, which was directed by Nicholson, Terms of Endearment, Hoffa, which DeVito directed and the sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks. 'When I was a kid, I always heard about this really handsome guy from Neptune who went out to California and became a movie star,' he recalled. DeVito was keeping that information to himself, but it was his friend and former roommate Michael Douglas, 80, who was producing the film, who spilled the beans. 'Jack came running around the corner: "Ahhhh! You're from Asbury Park?"' he asked. Nicholson received his first Oscar award for his portrayal of a rebellious convict sent to a psychiatric hospital, where he inspired rebellion against a dominating nurse. In fact One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was the first film since 1934's It Happened One Night to sweep all five of the top Academy Awards; Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress for Fletcher, Best Director for Milos Forman, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Alex Horne teases major change for Taskmaster season 21 and 'special guest'

Taskmaster creator Alex Horne has teased a new series of the Bafta-winning Channel 4 comedy. Taskmaster creator Alex Horne has teased big changes in store for the Channel 4 programme's 21st season. For the uninitiated, the long-running comedy series sees a batch of five celebrities pitted against each other as they take on various bizarre tasks to be crowned the winner. ‌ From filling an egg cup with their own tears, attempting to make a bridge out of straws, rubbers and chewing gum, to hula hooping on stage in front of a live audience, or making a creepy nursery rhyme, Taskmaster really has seen it all. ‌ The series, hosted by Greg Davies and 'Little' Alex Horne as his assistant, first aired in 2019, and over that time has seen more than a hundred celebrities take part, including Munya Chawawa, Judi Love, Joe Lycett, Katherine Ryan and Bob Mortimer. The latest season featured Fatiha El-Ghorri, Jason Mantzoukas, Matthew Baynton, Rosie Ramsey and Stevie Martin battle it out, with Ghosts actor Mathew crowned the winner. And although season 20's line-up has only just been announced, with the series yet to air later this year, Alex has already teased the following instalment. ‌ In an interview with Radio Times , he shared: 'There are two things that are new. We're filming somewhere as well as the house – somewhere that's pretty mad." He then added: "And we have a special guest this series from somewhere exotic who you'll recognise. That's all I can say." ‌ He went on to tell the publication: "20's coming out soon. All going well. We're just in the middle of filming the next one and I'm still enjoying it. I'm still weirdly finding it exciting." Though there's no telling who that could be, fans were left delighted when the season 20 line-up dropped. ‌ It will see Ania Magliano, Maisie Adam, Phil Ellis, Reece Shearsmith and Sanjeev Bhaskar go head to head to be named champion, while a New Year 's special is also presumed to air, with past specials having seen the likes of Claudia Winkleman, Sir Mo Farah, Carol Vorderman, Martin Lewis and Rylan Clark take part. After a teaser showing the five new comedians filming a task for season 20, as part of the line-up announcement, fans were left delighted. One wrote: 'My prayers have been answered I have wanted maisie adam on taskmaster for so long.' ‌ Another said: 'Oh this is going to be GOOD!!' 'FINALLY REECE OH MY GOD IVE WAITED MY WHOLE LIFE FOR THIS,' a fourth commented. ‌ Meanwhile, Horrible Histories star Mathew reflected on his win in a recent interview with Metro, and revealed his plans to return. 'I'm just really happy. I was having so much fun…,' he shared. After a suggestion of returning for the Champion of Champions series, which has the previous winners battle it out against each other, he added: 'I did start thinking, oh, it would be really nice [to win] because winning means a repeat of the experience. The number one thing about winning is thinking, Oh, great, I get to go back. 'I guess the only sadness about getting to go back is that I won't be sat with those guys [the season 19 contestants] because they were so much fun.'

EastEnders' major shake-up as Martin Fowler's replacement on market confirmed

It has been five months since Martin Fowler was brutally killed off on EastEnders leaving his fruit and veg stall unattended - but now a new stall keeper has been uncovered Changes are coming to Albert Square as the iconic fruit and veg stall is set to have a new owner. Long time fans of the BBC soap will be well aware that Martin Fowler held down the stall until her was brutally killed off earlier this year. Now it has been revealed that returning character Oscar Branning will take control of the market stall as he begins to resettle into life in East London. EastEnders fans will be well aware that Oscar is the teenage son of Max Branning and Tanya Cross and the younger brother of Lauren Branning. ‌ The character first appeared on the BBC show 2007 and been played by Gabriel Miller-Williams from 2007 until 2008, Neo Hall from 2008 until 2015, and Charlee Hall from 2013 until 2017. Oscar is now being played by Pierre Moullier with an upcoming storyline set to explain how he ends up running the fruit and veg stall. ‌ Discussing his casting recently, Pierre explained that he can't wait for soap fans to see him on screen and learn where the show writers take his character. He said, as per OK! Magazine: "It's pretty surreal to join EastEnders - it keeps hitting me that I'm actually on Albert Square. "When I found out I was joining the Brannings, it was so exciting as they are such an iconic family, and I love that there are so many skeletons in the closet." And teasing his character arc, he added: "Oscar is so much fun to play and the audience should be prepared for the unexpected as he's a complex guy." ‌ EastEnders' Executive Producer Ben Wadey shared his excitement over Oscar's return. He said: "I'm very excited to bring Oscar Branning back to Walford and introduce viewers to him now that he's all grown up." And hinting at the drama to come, Ben added: "Oscar is very much a Branning which means there's going to be plenty of drama in store this summer. We're delighted to welcome Pierre as he takes on the role and ca''t wait for viewers to see him bring Oscar to life." Plot details suggest that Oscar returns to Albert Square to shake up the life of his sister Lauren, played by Jacqueline Jossa. But when Lauren offers Oscar a trial shift on the stall - and encouraged by Penny Branning, played by Kitty Castledine, to take on the work - he begins to consider if he can build a life for himself in the city. ‌ Earlier this year, EastEnders fans were devastated when Martin Fowler was killed off in a shock twist during a 40th anniversary special episode. James Bye, who played the character from 2014 to 2025, explained why the time was right to walk away from the character. He said in a statement following his explosive exit: "Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the show's epic 40th anniversary, the time felt right. It's an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the fans of the show – EastEnders wouldn't be what it is without you – and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years. This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It's time to look forward, and I'm incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler." ‌ Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said at the time: 'It's incredibly sad to say goodbye to James, who has been a much-loved, loyal company member for 10 years. James' performance in tonight's live episode was nothing short of outstanding and one that I know will touch so many of you watching at home due to his loveable portrayal of Martin Fowler, which has made him a firm favourite amongst the viewers. When discussing James' exit, we knew that we needed to give Martin Fowler the big explosive storyline that his character deserved. "To leave the show in such an emotional storyline, during a live episode is something incredibly courageous to do as an actor, and one that I'm sure will cement itself in EastEnders history. I would like to thank James for everything he's given to EastEnders, and although we will all miss him here at Elstree, he will always remain a member of the EastEnders family and we wish him the best for the future.' Martin was first played by Jon Peyton-Price when EastEnders began in 1985 and he held onto the role until 1996. James Alexandrou then took on the role and played from 1996 until 2007 after which time James took over. Martin was killed when he was crushed by a fallen structural beam in an accident and died following a heart attack.
