Mann Ki Baat: PM highlights public health gains, grassroots change, dwells on Emergency anniversary

New Delhi, June 29 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today highlighted India's public health milestones, growing grassroots participation and women-led development efforts, while reflecting upon the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
In the 123rd edition of his monthly talk show Mann ki Baat, PM Modi recalled the nationwide enthusiasm surrounding the 10th International Yoga Day, observed on June 21. He noted in detail the wide-scale participation across the country and abroad, with the headline events in Visakhapatnam witnessing three lakh people perform yoga, and 2,000 tribal students conducting 108 Surya Namaskars.
Similar events were held in Telangana (featuring 3,000 Divyang participants), on the Chenab Bridge in J&K, aboard Indian Naval ships, and in cities across the world including New York and Paris, Modi said while stressing that 'this time the theme was also very special, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. This is not just a slogan; it is a direction which makes us realize the essence of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'. I am sure, the grandeur of this year's Yoga Day will certainly inspire more and more people to adopt yoga.'
He lauded the World Health Organisation's recent declaration of India as Trachoma-free, attributing the achievement to improved sanitation and access to clean drinking water under initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Jal Jeevan Mission.
He also cited an ILO (International Labour Organisation) report which states that over 64% of India's population now benefits from some form of social protection, up from fewer than 25 crore beneficiaries in 2015. Nearly 95 crore people are now covered by welfare schemes — a figure the PM described as indicative of saturation-based governance.
Referring to women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Telangana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, the Prime Minister commended grassroots entrepreneurship and health awareness efforts, such as millet-based products and low-cost sanitary pads.
Marking 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency (1975–77), Modi played archival audio clips of former PM Morarji Desai, Babu Jagjivan Ram, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, describing the period as one of repression. He recalled the suspension of civil liberties, arrests under MISA, media censorship and judicial curbs, and lauded the people's resistance that led to the restoration of democracy.
'We countrymen have observed the 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. We should always remember all those people who fought the Emergency with fortitude. This inspires us to remain constantly vigilant to keep our Constitution strong and enduring,' he added.
Other segments highlighted the Bodoland CEM Football Cup in Assam as he talked about footballers like Halicharan Narzary and Durga Boro who were mentioned as symbols of youth aspiration and transformation in a region once marked by conflict.
Referring to young footballers from Bodoland who have risen to national prominence despite limited resources, the PM noted that their journeys were marked by perseverance and resilience. 'Many of them practised with limited resources; many forged their way through difficult circumstances, and today many young children of the country kickstart their dreams, inspired by their names,' he said.
Emphasising the importance of fitness and well-being, Modi reiterated one of his earlier suggestions for tackling rising obesity by reducing oil consumption by 10% in daily diets. 'When you're fit, you will be more super hit in life,' he remarked, highlighting concerns over lifestyle-related health issues.
The PM also touched upon the spiritual and community dimensions of religious yatras, referring to the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the Amarnath Yatra from July 3, and the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, all of which he framed as symbols of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'.
Reflecting on the overwhelming response in Vietnam to the display of Buddha's sacred relics from Nagarjunakonda (Andhra Pradesh), which drew 1.5 crore visitors across nine locations, he described it as an example of India's cultural and spiritual diplomacy, and urged citizens to visit Buddhist heritage sites within the country.
Praising environmental efforts across India from Gujarat to Maharashtra, the PM mentioned Pune's Ramesh Kharmale, who spends weekends planting trees and digging trenches on the Junnar hills. He also referred to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's 'Mission for Million Trees', including a 'Sindoor Van' to honour martyrs of Operation Sindoor.
In Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district's Patoda village, a Carbon neutral panchayat with zero littering, wastewater treatment, and eco-friendly cremation practices also found mention in the PM's radio speech with listeners being urged to join campaigns like 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', which promotes tree plantation in a parent's name.
Modi noted that July 1 marks Doctors' Day and Chartered Accountants' Day, hailing doctors as guardians of health and CAs as stewards of India's economic life. UNI AJ SSP

Using tech to empower women and children

Empowerment begins with access — access to rights, to services, to protection, and to opportunity. Over the past decade, this access has been redefined and democratised through the focused commitment of the Modi government to build a more inclusive and digitally empowered India. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has been at the forefront of this transformation. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, the Ministry has integrated technology into its programmes, ensuring that benefits reach the last mile swiftly, transparently, and efficiently. What was once aspirational is now operational thanks to the government's emphasis on digital public infrastructure, real-time data systems, and responsive governance. With steadfast focus on care, protection, and empowerment, the Ministry has strengthened access to nutrition, education, legal safeguards, and essential entitlements, ensuring that women and children lead healthier, more secure lives, and also emerge as confident leaders and change makers of Amrit Kaal. Transformative initiatives A cornerstone of this transformation is the Saksham Anganwadi initiative, designed to modernise and empower over 2 lakh Anganwadi centres across India. These centres are being upgraded with smart infrastructure, digital devices, and innovative learning tools, enabling more effective delivery of nutrition, healthcare, and pre-school education services. The integration of services provided by 14 lakh Anganwadi centres across the nation with the Poshan Tracker has enabled real-time data entry, performance monitoring, and evidence-based policy interventions. Over 10.14 crore beneficiaries, including pregnant women, lactating mothers, children under six, and adolescent girls, are now registered on Poshan Tracker. By equipping Anganwadi workers with smartphones and comprehensive training, the initiative ensures quality service delivery at the last mile. At its core, Poshan Tracker is driving the national vision of a Swasth Bharat, Suposhit Bharat. It reimagines Anganwadi centres as digitally empowered community hubs that bridge the urban-rural divide. Recognised with the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration (2025), it also supports Poshan Bhi, Padhai Bhi, providing digital training modules to Anganwadi workers for early childhood education. Further, to reduce leakages in the Supplementary Nutrition Programme, a facial recognition system has been introduced to ensure that eligible beneficiaries alone receive nutrition support. Beyond nutrition, the Ministry is ensuring safety and support for women through technology-led platforms. The SHe-Box portal provides single-window access to every woman to lodge complaints under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. It enables online redressal and tracking. Meanwhile, the Mission Shakti dashboard and mobile app provide integrated assistance to women in distress, connecting them to the nearest one-stop centre, now operational in nearly every district. These interventions exemplify how technology is being used not just for efficiency, but for justice, dignity, and empowerment. The Modi government has also operationalised the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) — a game changer in maternal welfare. Under the PMMVY Rules, 2022, pregnant women receive ₹5,000 for their first child. Under Mission Shakti, the benefit extends to ₹6,000 if the second child is a girl — promoting positive reinforcement for daughters. Delivered through a paperless Direct Benefit Transfer system, about ₹19,000 crore has reached over 4 crore women beneficiaries since its inception. PMMVY is a fully digital programme — leveraging Aadhaar-based authentication, mobile-based registration, doorstep assistance from Anganwadi/ASHA workers, and real-time dashboards. A dedicated grievance redressal module and citizen-facing portal ensure transparency, trust, and accountability, strengthening the government's commitment to Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. Tangible outcomes These targeted efforts are delivering tangible outcomes. The latest reports from the Health Management Information System of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) reveal that the Sex Ratio at Birth has increased from 918 (2014-15) to 930 (2023-24). The Maternal Mortality Rate has declined to 97 per 1,000 births (2018-20) from 130 per 1,000 births (2014-16). Digital transformation has played a key role in child protection and welfare. Under the Juvenile Justice Act (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, the Ministry has strengthened the adoption ecosystem through the CARINGS portal (Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System). This ensures a more transparent, accessible, and efficient adoption process. Digitisation has also improved monitoring of child care institutions, foster care placements, and statutory support structures under the Act. Platforms developed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights are tracking violations of child rights. The Mission Vatsalya dashboard strengthens convergence and coordination among various child welfare stakeholders. This is New India where governance meets technology, and policy meets purpose. Over the last decade, the Ministry has not only adapted to digital change, but championed it. Annapurna Devi is the Union Minister of Women and Child Development

Jharkhand to institutionalise UNICEF coordination for SDG tracking

Ranchi, July 1 (UNI) The Jharkhand government is moving to institutionalise its collaboration with UNICEF through a structured review and data-sharing mechanism aimed at accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari, the state directed UNICEF to establish a system for continuous assessment and alignment with departmental initiatives. Emphasising the need for strategic coordination, the chief secretary instructed UNICEF to hold fortnightly meetings with all relevant departments. The aim is to ensure regular feedback loops, enhance programme synergy, and avoid duplication of efforts across sectors such as health, education, nutrition, and social security. Highlighting the overlapping objectives of the state and UNICEF in areas of sustainable development, the chief secretary said both must share and synchronise data for evidence-based planning. A shared portal, to be developed in collaboration with the Planning and Development Department, was proposed to address issues of data mismatch and improve real-time monitoring. UNICEF was also tasked with preparing a blueprint to adapt successful social sector models from other Indian states. The blueprint is expected to provide implementable strategies for Jharkhand based on comparative best practices in child health, nutrition, education, and community engagement. The chief secretary directed that UNICEF bring field-level insights, experiences, and recommendations into the regular review meetings to help refine ongoing state programmes. 'UNICEF should examine how to improve coordination with government schemes for children and enhance delivery on the ground,' she said, urging a sharper focus on monitoring systems and measurable outcomes. A special emphasis was laid on reaching out to the marginalised communities and tackling malnutrition and sanitation-related challenges. The state reiterated its focus on sustainable and inclusive growth, especially for vulnerable groups. Acknowledging UNICEF's contribution to hand hygiene awareness, the chief secretary encouraged the agency to extend similar collaborative efforts across other sectors such as maternal health, child protection, and social welfare. 'UNICEF must continue building awareness in coordination with government departments to empower communities in multiple dimensions,' she said. Earlier, UNICEF shared a detailed presentation outlining its initiatives and outcomes in the state, particularly in child-centric domains. The review covered ongoing programmes, grassroots engagement models, and thematic focus areas aligned with the SDGs. The meeting was attended by secretaries Mast Ram Meena, Manoj Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Umashankar Singh, Neha Arora, and UNICEF Jharkhand chief Kaninika Mitra along with other officials from the organisation. Principal District Judge announces medical examination for Divyang children at home

In a move to help Divyang (physically challenged) children who have severe motor disabilities to get their disability certificates, their medical examinations will henceforth be conducted at their homes. Justice Mahendra K Mahajan, principal district and sessions judge, Pune, made this announcement while speaking at the special camp for distribution of Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID) organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) on Sunday. He asked parents of such children to contact the DLSA for the same. Judge Sonal Patil, secretary of DLSA Pune, while speaking to The Indian Express, said the camp was organized to distribute UDID to children from aged 18 and below. 'Some parents contacted us and said they are unable to get their children as they are severely challenged for movement. Honorable Principal and Sessions Judge then asked us to ensure such children are medically checked at their home,' she said. Judge Patil said earlier doctors who conducted the tests had said the existing legal network does not allow them to go to the homes of the children for any such check-up. Patil also asked parents of such children to conduct the DLSA for conducting such tests at home. She even confirmed that the vehicle and team would be sent, even if there is one such child who requires medical examination. UDID is the identification card given to Divyangs, which allows them to access government facilities. Before the card is issued, a thorough physical examination is done by the district civil surgeon who is stationed at the Aundh District Hospital in Pune. Check-ups are done at government hospitals where the tests are carried out. Patil said they will arrange for the team and ensure the tests are conducted on time. The camp saw more than 100 Divyang being checked and over 500 people benefiting from the camp.
