These Waterproof Mascaras Don't Budge—Even After a Day at the Beach

Elle09-06-2025
Not to be dramatic, but waterproof mascara means a lot to me. The drier, waxier formula not only ensures I don't end up with raccoon eyes after a sweaty subway ride to the office, but it also locks my stick-straight lashes into their freshly curled position all day long. So, whether you're tired of finding black flakes and smudging on your lids or in need of something to wear during your beach and poolside activities this summer, these water-repellent formulas have your back.
Even celebrity makeup artist Vincent Oquendo swears by the unyielding power of waterproof mascara. 'The thing I love most is that if I send my client out on the red carpet with it on, I don't have to worry about the mascara running or transferring,' he says, noting that it's especially essential for those with 'a hooded eyelid or very long lashes that touch the crease or the skin below their eyes.' The magic is in the silicone and polymer that most formulas contain. Together, the ingredients 'create a waterproof barrier between your lashes and the formula,' Oquendo explains.
While we used to live in a world where smudge-proof formulas often meant less impactful lashes, the industry has evolved. You can now find countless mascaras that repel water and deliver incredible length and volume. However, with so many great formulas available, it can be challenging to navigate through all the trial and error. To simplify your search, I've tested dozens of options, tapped Oquendo for his top picks, and scoured customer reviews to gather the eight best waterproof mascaras below. Just make sure you have a trusty cleansing oil on hand for easy removal!
Benefit Cosmetics took their fan-favorite volumizing mascara and made it water resistant. The Badgal Bang! Waterproof Volumizing Mascara provides impressive volume and length that lasts, boasting a 36-hour wear time. Plus, the product never weighs down your lashes thanks to its unique, ultralight aero-particals.
Benefits: Volumizing
Shades: 1
Nordstrom rating: 4.6/5
An ELLE editor says: 'I was already obsessed with the original Badgal Bang! mascara, so when Benefit came out with a waterproof version, I knew I had to get my hands on it. The formula makes my very short, very straight lashes incredibly long and voluminous—never clumpy! I love that the wand is thin enough to coat every lash from corner to corner. Not to mention, its 'zero-gravity formula' really does feel super lightweight and allows my lashes to hold a curl better than most mascaras I've tried. And with 36-hour wear? This mascara can't be beat.'—Emma Aerin Becker, associate beauty e-commerce writer
Just as the name implies, this mascara delivers big, bold lashes every swipe. A favorite of Oquendo's, the Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara features a large brush with soft, wavy fibers that boost volume upon application. Its formula is super creamy and made with smudge-proof, sweat-proof, and, of course, waterproof agents that help it last up to 24 hours.
Benefits: VolumizingShades: 1Nordstrom rating: 4.7/5An ELLE editor says: 'With a few coats of The Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara, my lashes look as though they've doubled in thickness. While I'm usually a fan of thinner brushes, this extra-large wand makes application a breeze, coating all my lashes in seconds. The ultra-creamy formula glides on beautifully and seriously doesn't budge.'—Emma Aerin Becker
If you're looking for lashes that reach the bottom of your brows, look no further than the L'Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Lengthening Mascara. True to its claim, the product lasts all day long and brings your lash length to new heights—literally. The unique wand has a comb-like side that's perfect for keeping your lashes separated. The best part? It's under $10 and available in nearly every drugstore you step into.
Benefits: Lengthening, Separating
Nordstrom rating: 4.5/5
An ELLE editor says: 'I discovered this mascara by accident when I forgot my go-to on vacation and stumbled into a local drugstore to save my bare lashes. I snagged the L'Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Lengthening Mascara from the makeup aisle, and it's been a staple in my collection ever since. After applying a few light coats, my lashes became so long I could feel them touching the tops of my eyelids—a sensation I had never experienced. And the extra-thin brush and bristles make for a clump-less application every single time.'—Emma Aerin Becker
Attention no-makeup-makeup lovers: This product lengthens, defines, and ever-so-slightly volumizes your lashes for a stunning natural finish. Even better, the formula's packed with monoi oil and marigold extract to condition and strengthen your eyelashes while you wear it.
Benefits: Lengthening, enhances curl
Sephora rating: 4/5
A Sephora reviewer says: 'I literally love this so much!! It is fully waterproof and does not smudge on my eyes at all. It is great because it is lightweight, and makes my eyelashes look much naturally longer and darker. I also love that it is in the clean collection.'
A runway staple for decades, this formula instantly thickens, lengthens, and even curls your lashes as you apply. The brand's exclusive Aquastop water-resistant technology ensures your mascara will never run or flake—no matter how many tears are shed. The cult-favorite formula comes in black, brown, and bright blue shades.
Benefits: Thickening, Lengthening
Nordstrom rating: 4.2/5
A Nordstrom reviewer says: 'Of all the waterproof mascaras I have used, this is by far my favorite. It separates my lashes, makes them look long, long, long, and never smudges under my eyes. It doesn't seem to contain fibres that end up flaking off and bothering my eyes, like some others. And it comes off completely with a luxurious cleanser. This is the only mascara I've used for the last 14 years. Love that it works so well and makes my eyelashes look so great!'
There's nothing worse than a clumpy mascara application, and when you love to layer your mascara as much as I do, you understand the struggle. Fortunately, Mac has solved all our clumpy conundrums with its MacStack Waterproof Mascara. Designed to be layered (or 'stacked'), this waterproof formula can be built up to its highest potential, providing customizable volume and length that lasts 24 hours, thanks to the brand's iMAC's Drench-Defense Technology.
Benefits: Custom length and volume
A Nordstrom reviewer says: 'Although this mascara was priced on the high end for me, I wanted one that would last while on vacation at the beach, and this was it! It doesn't budge, it doesn't clump when stacking and last all day. It's the perfect mascara for me'
A mascara that delivers extreme, long-lasting volume while making your natural lashes softer? Yes, please. Infused with iris extract, the YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Waterproof Mascara conditions your eyelashes as you wear it. The nourishing formula also boasts 48 hours of maximum thickness and color.
Sephora rating: 4.3/5
A Sephora reviewer says: 'Yves Saint Laurent's Lash Clash Extreme Volume Waterproof Mascara is now my holy grail mascara. I have been on the hunt for a good waterproof mascara forever. I have oily lids and some waterproof mascaras would still end up under my eyes, giving me raccoon eyes. Or, some waterproof mascaras don't really provide length or volume. It goes smoothly, doesn't clump. It really provides great length and volume. I also wear contact lenses and found this mascara comfortable to wear. I will repurchase once I run out.'
Oquendo swears by the Serge Lutens Mascara, because—to put it plainly—it really does it all. One swipe delivers long-lasting volume and impressive lash length; the one-sided comb applicator is amazing at separating each lash as you swipe, and works to physically extend the look of your lash. Plus, it comes in two unique shades: a deep black brown and a transparent version filled with fibers.
Benefits: Volumizing, lengthening, separating
Shades: 2
Serge Lutens rating: 5/5
A Serge Lutens reviewer says: 'Speechless... Expensive yes...worth it ? absolutely! Does not clump, does not smudge, has staying power.'
Vincent Oquendo is a celebrity makeup artist based in New York City, and the host of his talk show 'Backseat Beauties.'
'Most waterproof mascaras contain silicone and polymers, which is what creates the waterproof barrier between your lashes and the formula,' explains Oquendo. Additionally, they're often infused with waxes, which repel water and provide a base for other ingredients to adhere to. Application is generally the same, though Oquendo warns, 'waterproof mascaras can take a little longer to dry, so when I'm applying it on my clients' lashes, I allow for extra drying time.'

Hailey Bieber's Favorite Transitional Top Is Taking Over Hollywood

Truly great layering basics are rare, so when Hailey Bieber left the gym last week in Intimissimi's Boat Neck Ultralight Top, we took note. Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen the semi-sheer, cashmere-blend style—it's been spotted on numerous other A-listers over the past few years and racked up millions of views on TikTok. Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Ratajkowski, and Nara Smith have all sported various colorways of the airy long-sleeve—styling it with everything from jeans to trousers and a blazer. ELLE cover star Addison Rae also wore one in her recent Headphones On music video. And you've likely seen some of your favorite influencers rocking the silhouette (or the bodysuit version), too. If Kendall Jenner's periwinkle pick flying off shelves in 2022 is any indication, there's no telling how long the piece will stay in stock after this latest celebrity sighting. In addition to the brand's own site, you can now snag the Boat Neck Top—alongside other celebrity-approved Intimissimi staples like the Ultralight Lace Long Sleeve Shirt and Ultralight High-Neck Top—on the label's new Amazon storefront. They're all available with speedy two-day Prime shipping, so you can easily stock up on must-have layering essentials before fall arrives.

Heidi Klum has awkward exchange with ‘rude' contestant during her ‘Project Runway' Season 21 return

Heidi Klum has returned to her runway. But not everyone was thrilled to hear what the host, 52, had to say during the Season 21 premiere of 'Project Runway' on Thursday. After a Disney-themed challenge put contestant Antonio Estrada in the bottom, he had some tense words for Klum, who returned to the competition series after stepping away in 2017. 8 Heidi Klum is back on 'Project Runway.' Disney 'Am I being 'Punk'd?' Estrada questioned after they announced his fate. The model, who serves as both host and head judge, quickly responded: 'No.' After judges Nina Garcia and Law Roach gave their feedback, Estrada pointed fingers at Christian Siriano, the designer's mentor. 'You keep blaming everything on Christian,' Roach noted. 8 Heidi Klum and Christian Siriano on 'Project Runway.' Disney 'Christian told me his intern could make that dress in 30 minutes,' Estrada quipped as Siriano, 39, agreed. 'I just think this dress underneath, an intern could make it in 30 minutes. It's a tube dress,' the fashion icon continued before Klum added that Estrada's model 'just looked like a big loofah.' Estrada didn't take kindly to the 'America's Got Talent' judge's feedback. 8 Antonio Estrada creates his dress on the Season 21 premiere of 'Project Runway.' Disney 'I'm a Gemini, and I don't like people telling me what to do,' he explained. 'And I was like, 'You're an adult, you're going to listen to Christian, he's here for a reason, he's your mentor.' And I did listen to him. That's why I changed my look three times. You pushed me to be better.' However, the competitor's words didn't sit right with the panel. Roach, 47, called Estrada's words 'spicy' as Garcia, 60, echoed her co-worker's sentiments. 'Antonio, you're being so defensive. We're just trying to understand your work. I don't think there's any reason to be defensive,' the Elle magazine Editor-in-Chief said. 8 Heidi Klum, Law Roach, Nina Garcia and Christian Siriano. Disney 'I think Nina's right to call that out,' Roach added. 'I think you're being defensive, and also a little bit rude.' 'It's okay to be criticized and to be let down by the criticism. But to kind of throw it back comes across as really quite nasty,' he went on. 'I'm just letting you know, one girl to another.' At the end of the episode, Estrada evaded elimination. A returning designer, Caycee Black, left the show instead. 8 The competitors get to work on the season premiere of the fashion competition show. Disney Klum, meanwhile, initially hosted the show from 2004 to 2017. She won the 2013 Emmy Award for her role, alongside her former co-host Tim Gunn. Klum was nominated nine times, with 'Project Runway' earning dozens of nods throughout its time on air. On Wednesday, the star gushed over coming back to her roots. 'It feels so amazing to be back,' Klum told E! News. 'It really feels like coming home.' 8 The contestants show off their creations on 'Project Runway.' Disney 'And then doing this with Law,' she stated, 'and obviously Nina, we've known each other for so long, Christian Siriano. And just having these 12 amazing, talented designers on the stage, it's just the most fun thing for me to watch and be part of.' Roach himself was excited to work with Klum. 'To hear Heidi was back, it was like, 'Okay, this feels good,'' he told the outlet. ''This feels like history.'' Garcia noted that not all of the competitors could take the heat. 8 The competitors talk during their first competiton. Disney 'The competition is tight, but I also think the judges, we are really telling them honestly how we feel,' she told viewers. 'And some take it well, some don't.' Along with a drama-packed season, viewers are in store for a slew of celebrity guest judges, including Tyra Banks, Nikki Glaser, Zac Posen and Sara Foster. Also making an appearance is Klum's fellow 'AGT' judge, Sofía Vergara. 'I was so happy that she said yes, because she's wearing, ultimately, the winning look,' Klum shared. 'I said to her, 'If you really hate it, I'm just gonna have to wear flats every time when I see you,' because she hates being shorter than me. She's always like, 'Klum, take those heels off.'' 8 Season 21 of 'Project Runway.' Disney Klum and her former co-host Gunn, 71, both exited 'Project Runway' seven years ago, with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover star sharing a heartfelt goodbye at the time. 'After 16 incredible seasons, I am saying 'Auf Wiedersehen' to 'Project Runway,' a show that I was honored to host and help create. I am incredibly proud of the show, and it will always have a special place in my heart,' she said in a statement. 'I am so appreciative of the dedicated fans, and most of all, I am grateful that we could shine a light on creativity and help launch so many talented designers' careers.'

The Closet App That Finally Lets You Get Dressed Like Cher Horowitz in 'Clueless'

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. In 1995, Clueless gave us a glimpse of fashion's future—a digital closet that could magically pick an outfit for you to wear with just a few taps and swipes. Fast-forward to 2025, and still rifling through wrinkled piles of 'nothing to wear.' Well, that chapter of our lives is finally coming to an end, thanks to Alta. The AI-powered closet app, founded by Jenny Wang, is bringing our Cher Horowitz-inspired dreams to life (minus the wardrobe meltdowns). Alta makes it incredibly easy to create a digital archive of your wardrobe, complete with outfit-planning tools. You can upload your own photos or pull images straight from the internet to build a catalog of every item you own—and no need to worry if you happen to stumble upon some bad lighting: Alta automatically enhances your photos, so even your most lived-in tee looks fit to appear in fashion magazine. Even better? You can tag items you've worn already—perfect for weeding out those pieces that never see the light of day. With the cost-per-wear feature, you can see which pieces are earning their keep and which deserve a second chance on The RealReal or Depop. But it's not just about the clothes. Add in your go-to lipsticks, signature scents, and beauty must-haves to plan complete looks, down to the final swipe of gloss. And the capabilities go beyond simply archiving everything. Backed by the CFDA, Alta is like having your own personal stylist on speed dial—one trained by real industry pros like Meredith Koop (yes, Michelle Obama's stylist). That means less frantic shopping and more thoughtful styling. One of Alta's smartest features? The digital avatar. With a few taps, you can style outfits on your own virtual body and test out how new pieces might pair with what you already own. Think of it as your fashion-savvy, judgment-free twin.
